I bought this for my 12 year old daughter who got two baby male rats. She wanted to teach them tricks. She had done a lot of internet research, but this book was better because it spent some time explaining WHY tricks work. She didn't know she was learning about animal behavior, but that's exactly what this book taught her.The author's style was very accessible and the pictures were nice. I think my daughter's favorite part was the assessment to see how smart your rat is. Apparently she has one very smart rat and one "loveable little dummy". Sure enough, the smart one will learn any trick she tries to teach him. The other one would prefer to cuddle.I highly recommend this book to any rat owner who would like to enjoy his or her rats even more. I think your rats would agree. Most rats really love the attention and the stimulation this kind of interaction provides.

This book was perfect for me as a first time rat owner. It cleared up all the mysteries of what my rat was going through, and made interacting much more comfortable. Training went by quickly as they learned the basics, and moved on to real tricks. The directions are very thorough and easy to follow, and often provide insight into rat behavior. We all have a ton more to learn, and this book will be keeping us about busy for quite some time.

Great book on training rats. However, I wish she would have done more basic stuff as most of us are not training rats for putting them in a circus or on TV. I find mine just want basics and it is hard to only use a few techniques mentioned to get results. I also wish there was more information on rat group behavior and how to train them when you work with them together as well.

I love this book. I love rats. Anyone who wants to train their rats to learn tricks, must buy this. I've already taught one of my babies some tricks using a clicker. Rats are so smart and love people. They will love you even more after you read this book. Definitely worth reading and would recommend to anyone else.

This book is great. I got it for my dad for Christmas because he is obsessed with how smart our rats are. He hasn't really read it and applied it to our rats yet, but looking through all the pictures of all the adorable baby rats has been fun. This book teaches you how to teach your rat little tricks like responding to his name, sitting still, going through obstacles, etc. Very informative. Also teaches you a bit about how to care for your rat. Since we've had rats for 10 years or more, we didn't need those instructions. But it is nice for new rat owners. :)

Rats make amazing pets! The most helpful part of this book for me was the "trust training" exercises, because my rats were not handled properly when young. They were very skittish at first and would completely panic when I held them. However, now they are excited to see me and love coming out of their cage. A big secret of the book is finding treats that they like, and bribing your ratties to like you (haha). We're working on the basic tricks now, one of them has already learned to come to me when I call him! Excellent book, great pictures. Debbie Ducommum truly is the Rat Lady!

This book is fantastic. It has a really helpful overview in the beginning and then great rat training. I like Debbie's way of writing and the information included.

The content focuses a great deal more on the internal workings and the business aspects of Roissy. It also of interest to witness the transformation of the role O plays: from an object possessed purely for pleasure to a useful tool - used as a means towards accomplishing a goal. All on all, the book is different from the original, but not less than.

This is not written with the same quality as the author's The Story of O. It was decidedly disappointing

This is supposed to be a continuation of the Story of O, but it doesn't seem to have a whole lot in common with that book. I haven't finished it yet, but so far not impressed.

If you have never heard of the story of O and read it then this is definitely a must read. The style is pretty close but not perfect. If you enjoyed The Story of O then you will enjoy this.

Here, exception refers to the state’s ability to rely on extrajudicial means in times of crisis – ‘the state’ essentially being the one that can utilize extrajudicial, exceptional means when faced with crisis. Agamben roots his notion of exception in the idea of homo sacer – a Roman legal concept that denoted a person who was stripped of their citizenship and subject to execution. Kaplonski refines Agamben’s theory of exception to make use of it in the Mongolian case. There was no homo sacer in Mongolia – the early Mongolian state simply did not possess enough power to simply execute them. As far as states go, the Mongolian government of this period was liminal – it lacked the traditional authority of a state to impose the rule of law, and it also lacked the exceptional authority to resort to extrajudicial means. Juxtaposing the two accounts, an irreconcilable irony develops: to refocus historical agency onto the Mongols, that is, to make them more than a ‘Soviet satellite,’ is also to hold them accountable to the purges. Kaplonski’s work also problematizes long-standing conceptions of the state, such as Weber’s famous dictum that the state is the entity/institution that can ‘make legitimate use of violence’. Kaplonski’s work demonstrates that the early Mongolian socialist state was in no position to make legitimate use of violence, and that it was only after the early Mongolian state attained a decree of judicial legitimacy that it could resort to violence at all.

The material in this book is not only academically sound material to use to teach a course, but this is something that I think all managers/supervisors should read.If you are a project manager, then yes. Read it.If you are a new project manager, DEFINITLY read it.If you are a manager who works near, with, for, or above a project manager, READ IT. Just read it.It isn't that big, only like 130 pages. The material is tailored to project management, but the lessons you can learn about team dynamics, planning, executing, evaluating, its all there. In doesn't go too in depth into any one subject, but it is a wonderful place to start as a surface level PM guideline.It really ought to be called "Project Management for Dummies" but i doubt Harvard would publish something with a title so beneath their stature.

For anyone in the business world, both large and small will appreciate this book. It covers a wide range of topics and ideas that will help out just about anybody. Not too dry and dull, but enough detail to help. It is a great starter book or a refresher.

For business, healthcare and other disciplines, if you are trying to put together a project or even write an executive summary, this really breaks it down into manageable pieces. It's an easy read and easy to find what you need.

I've read other books in the Harvard Business Essentials collection, and this one is great also. Has a lot of the same topics as PMP books do, but in a more condensed and no fluff version. This really is a wonderful book.Why?Because it does something that so few books do.Each building has its own section. There is a lot of information. The early history of a building is detailed, as well as its great era, slow decline, and byzantine story about its ruination (I think each building has a byzantine ruination story).There are also lots-o-pictures. Again, showing each building in a pristine state - all the better to make you GASP at the current images.The book is VERY depressing but through no fault of the author. It's just simply tragic that we as a culture would allow the utter destruction of such architectural gems. This never fails to amaze me. It's heart-rending.

I like that the book provided before and after pictures. The pictures of the original structures being supplied from archives so I had the ability to see the buildings in their original grandeur. The information provided was somewhat insightful too. I think if someone was really into the history ie., dates, names, architects, etc., this would be quite interesting. The last chapter about The Woodward Presbyterian Church was a little too much information for me and I think many of the details were not important to demise of the building itself. If that chapter would have been more of a summation there would have been room for another chapter on another sad, forgotten building on it's way to extinction.My only other critique would be that I wish some of these books would include information in the index or at the end of the books last chapter about how people can help to restore or keep these buildings from being destroyed. I know there are many people out there like me who would love to participate in some way to make this situation better.

This book caught my interest first because I am extremely interested in any information about Detroit, and second, that there were many excellent pictures to accompany the text. I do not live in Michigan let alone in Detroit, but love history! Therefore when I was looking for my second book about Detroit to read, first the title attracted my attention and then the pictures drew me in even further! So happy that it seemed like a book that I wanted to read! The author has done his job exceptionally well. He held my interest by giving the reader enough background that the reader always had a sufficient background to understand the written matter. I'm sorry that these majestic buildings have fallen to such disrepair, but at least I know what and how this occurred.

As a former Detroiter, I liked the depth of the histories and the stories about each building. I probably made a mistake in reading this on a Kindle because all of the photos were B&W and of reduced size so that much of their detail was lost. The book could have benefited from a more standardized set of recent photos of each building - by that I mean front, back, sides of each plus an overhead shot of the building and area to show the buildings' layout on the property and proximity to other buildings and neighborhoods; a map of each area would also have helped. This would have made it easier to understand the narrative. Pictures of the original buildings are of course limited to what's available and those are excellent, but a detailed format for new pictures would have helped my understanding and enjoyment of the stories.

…another great book of really, really sad beautifully shot photos. After viewing this book and others like it, readers are left with such sadness. How could civilized society let once grand building to simply rot via the ravage of mother nature AND vandals that break in to unsecure or unattended buildings only to further destroy tributes to man's ability to think, design, and build incredible buildings. Be prepared to be saddened but also maybe angry......angry at those that left these building defenseless against time, mother nature, and worse of all.....the SOB's that break in and for nothing other than boredom....destroy them.

Wonderful book that shows what an incredible city Detroit was at one time. What a tragedy to see it now. It has crumbled, beautiful homes and communities turned into slums that are unsafe to even drive through. The incredible department stores at one time were full of marble with unbelievable architecture has been blown up in order to bring them down. In Europe and other places, these incredible buildings would have been preserved for future generations. In America, we tear them down. I love our country, especially Detroit. It is heartbreaking to see such a wonderful city brought to ruin. Perhaps someday it will be revived, but not in my life time.

We are from Detroit and moved to Georgia. I got this for our Coffee Table. The size is nice and attention getting, perfect for a coffee table piece. The clarity and quality of the photography is beautiful, and does justice to the beauty of the Decay that has become Detroit. Filled with tidbits of info to inspire someone to want to visit Detroit to see these broken places that once stood proud and tall.

Ivan iIlich's views are MUCH needed in our society today. I am partially employed and 'usefully unemployed' for decades, allowing me the freedom of expression to expend untold hours of work in running local municipal campaigns, help with my children's children, and the time to THINK and savor the small unnoticed events in life. This has required not wealth, but a commitment from me to the "Degrowth" economics of consuming less and sharing more.

The book falls short of a lot. Intellectual bantering. Not worth the price. It is an OK book, very thin. But never really drives the point home.

Illich makes what would otherwise be dry reading into an emotional and thought-provoking journey. He has great perception to see interactions in society. Every moment I spent reading it was worthwhile. Just as much fun was deconstructing his arguments to see how he reached the conclusions and deciding whether I agree. I am eager to read "Tools for Conviviality."Illich proposes that sometime in the last 50 years society passed through a threshold where "modernized subsistence" was achieved and all our modern real needs were met. At this point we reached the maximum, and coincidently the ideal level, of individual satisfaction through a balance of autonomous action and consumption of mass-produced commodities (goods and services primarily in medical, transportation and educational areas). But then society passed through this threshold and, as a result individuals have been experiencing lower and lower overall satisfaction with life with our ever increasing use of mass-produced commodities.Illich argues that society would have stopped at the threshold value had there not been created at that moment the distorting force of the Dominant Professions. Dominant Professions that impel society to produce a surfeit of mass-produced commodities.Dominant Professions are a professional class with the power to impute the need for unneeded commodities upon the citizenry. By using the language of the Professional, they trick us laymen to go beyond our real needs by creating in us needs that we would not otherwise have - imputed needs. They do this for the sake of sustaining and furthering their authority and profession and in the service of the people who control the tools of mass production. The Dominant Professionals not only control the distribution and supply of the approved commodity that satisfies our imputed need, they also make it illegal or impossible to satisfy our need using a non-approved commodity. The Professional's commodities are of course mass-produced. Thus, society has passed the threshold because of the Dominant Professions. To get back to that threshold value we need to dismantle the authority of the professional class.Those are the arguments. The fun part is decomposing the arguments. Stop reading now if you want to figure it out for yourself without being biased by my analysis.First, Illich imagines us a citizenry of such simpletons we can't determine how much we need to sustain ourselves in this late industrial society. By calling every need an "imputed need" if it is beyond "modernized subsistence", Illich can blame the Dominate Professionals for causing society to progress past where it would otherwise have stopped, fully satisfied. I disagree. It is the ever expanding desires of individuals that keep us wanting more long after we knowingly achieved subsistence. We are never satisfied enough to stop wanting more. These are not imputed needs from an external Professional class that we need to defend ourselves against, this is our own natural behavior which we chose not to rein in.Illich also tells us that we know the maximum benefit to life that industry can ever provide. Fortunately, this is not true. For example, if average longevity hasn't changed during the past 50 years it doesn't follow that industry has been ineffective. This assumes a constant population base whereas the size of society is increasing and more people are living to about the same age. And there is ample evidence that the mass-produced commodities are the cause for improvement in life. Examples Illich sites in the book as examples of autonomous actions replaced by commodites that induce "modernized poverty" include; peasants living in homes they built from and upon the refuse of others moved to pre-fabricated houses, indoor light from fires and candles replaced with electricity, infant mortality reduced by the presence of trained physicians. Furthermore, individual human longevity is not limited by a theoretical physical law we know of in the same way the speed of light is. Thus, because the record has not been broken in the past 50 years it does not follow that it cannot be broken during the next 50 years. If we followed this logic long-jump competitions were no longer necessary after the 1968 Olympics.Illich proposes that we are faced with a new choice - "modernized subsistence" - resulting from the invention of modern industrial capabilities. However, each age - in it's own time "modern" - stone, bronze, iron or last week in the post industrial age, the commodities that determined the maximum attainable life and the minimum amount of resources needed to stay alive, e.g. the subsistence level, were dependent on what was available. Because installation of a society-wide commodity will always impede the liberty of an individual to use another technology or no technology at all - whether it is the rules of the road, language, or inoculations, there is no non-zero level of commodity use required that will simultaneously preserve for every individual the liberty to act and the same objective measure of "modernized subsistence". Simply said - your actions count towards yourself and the whole.Illich's asserts we know what "modernized subsistence" looks like from empirical observation. In fact, Illich gives his opinion of a current and real country that has at its disposal the appropriate intensity of production to approximate "modernized subsistence." Subsistence is a minimum level to support life. "Modernized Subsistence" supports "Convivial Austerity." What Illich proposes is his ideal society: his idea of the ideal life for the individual that alienates the liberties he cherishes least and mandates the commodities he values more.Illich shows our beautiful tendency to romanticize the past; when it seemed that the world reached its apex coincidently with our arrival on the planet. Language was real, technology was benign, and people were pure until that moment when a kernel -born only in our consciousness - metastasized and corrupted the balance of powers that would have otherwise been. Reality is that language is always evolving, applied technology is never benign and people run the gamut from altruistic to evil. And this has always been the case. Illich's arguments and desires for a better world are wonderful food-for-thought. They also are unfortunately an impractical model for society.

The book rates 5 stars for its writing. The premise is interesting and forms a decent basis for analyz(s)ing a human societal condition but he moans too loudly about what its effects are and mis-predicts what's been happening.In fact there are more of us, both in number and as a proportion of humankind who are "usefully unemployed". The "professional enemies" of this right/art are increasingly ridiculed/ignored despite their mostly effective power grab - the power they grab finally corrupts them so near absolutely that they become impotent therefrom and the doctor who gets his portfolio value higher and his golf handicap lower is made poorer if not thereby then therewith.More people let their awareness of "rat race" "cognitive overload" and other nomenclatural descriptions of our riches affect their activities and we are increasingly info-source as well as info-sinks. There isn't really less reading going on but it's clear that there's more writing being done, and that's leading to an understanding that it's the act of expression that matters whether one finds audience for such as this or not.I'm as enriching as I am enriched from building musical instruments and making music with them even though only a handful get used by others and almost nobody hears what I play. The book overlooks this phenomenon's burgeoning.Love.
