#3,344,898 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

In searching Prolog courses on-line, this book is referenced as #1 over and over again. So far I have read about 1/2 the book. It does not disappoint. I find Prolog a hard language to get proficency. The "declarative style" of programming is very different from the other 3 paradigms of programming. (The other three are procedural, object oriented, and functional. As a prerequisite to this book I would suggest "The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs." ) This book gives lots of examples and exposition to get both a logical and intuitive feel of problem solving in Prolog. I am afraid it make take more than one reading to understand Prolog.

Having just read a book on automated reasoning which covered topics in logic, such as unification and resolution, I was very pleased with the prolog programming language, in that it takes concepts from logic, and uses them in ways that can be applied to a number of interesting areas of AI, such as NLP, planning, and expert systems. I thought Bratko succeeded in making this connection with logic, without burdening the reader with notation and concepts that are really not needed for writing or understanding prolog programs. The book also worked for me on the level of providing a good introduction to the syntax and sematics of the language. The first 200 pages succeed to this end. Finally, the last 13 chapters can be summarized as representing an introduction to AI from a prolog perspective. On the positive side, he shows how to apply prolog to all of the modern, main streams of AI study. However, on the negative, the slant towards prolog in these chapters tends to oversimplify these disciplines. My impression of the language is that it seems good as a prototying language, since it is declarative in nature, but from my experimentation (using SWI Prolog) I think I could write better implementations using c or java.In closing, Bratko's book represents a very good place to start learning prolog and the world of AI.

A new edition will be out soon, in 2010. This is an excellent book on Prolog *and* on AI.For example, chapter 19 is an introduction to inductive learning in first-order logic, an advanced topic rarely found in introductory books. The example program HYPER is a very powerful learner as compared to other "propositional" machine learning methods such as decision trees, neural networks, or support vector machines. I have ported HYPER to Lisp and am still exploring it.Prolog is not a very popular language nowadays, but basic knowledge of it is still essential to learning logic-based AI.

Professor Bratko has done a tremendous job of putting all the fundamental concepts of Prolog and its applications in various areas of AI. Although this book is focused on Prolog, the concepts that he has discussed are so fundamental that they can be implemented in other languages like Java as well.I recommend this book to everyone who wants to learn Prolog. I would also recommend the readers to use a Prolog system to work out the examples and exercises as s/he goes through every chapter. A DEC10 Prolog system (like SICStus Prolog) would probably be the best companion for this book.

Though I have just started this book, I can tell that it is going to be amazing. I have been trying to find a good introduction to Prolog for some time now, and this is exactly what I had been looking for. Clear presentation, beautiful and complete editing work, easy to understand, and comprehensive. If you do want to use this book for A.I. though, and you either already understand Prolog or would rather work in lisp/python/etc. this book may be a bit much for you, either in terms of redundancy or over-saturation. However, if you can manage to slug through it (it is rather huge at 678 pgs), I think that anyone interested in A.I. or Prolog could find something helpful in this book.Overall, I am excited to work through this book, and I will probably update my review once I have done so.

I teach programming in Prolog and Artificial Intelligence in a Mexican University. This is an essential book for Prolog programming, excellent!A loving fourth edition 2012 from Ivan Bratko.

For a review of both Prolog and AI-based algorithms, this is the book to read! I learend Prolog AND AI from this in one semester, and it was my very last class bfore graduation. WE used Turbo Prolog and if you can find a copy, I'd recommend it.I've read reviews of this book that state Dr. BRatko is talking to peers or himself. I can't udnerstand it., The text was perfectly udnerstandable to me. And re-reading it, it still is. I plan to use the AI half of the book when writing my master's thesis next year.

First page provides link to web resource page where Prolog code should be available. Unfortunately, if you go there, there is message that "companion web page not available yet" and the only available one is for 3rd edition.Otherwise, great Prolog application book, however here and there pretty shallow, such as chapter on CLP

#20,624 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book had me riveted from the start, the very first page. I'm a 37 year old mom who had her daughter approach her with concerns that she may be anorexic. I can remember reading a book when I was around her age which made the dangers of anorexia and bulimia stick in my mind crystal clear, but cannot for the life of me remember the title. So, off I went on google looking for it, but found Wintergirls instead.I had this read in 24 hours. It isn't a long book for me considering the font size, but it also gripped me that I wanted to read it and find out the rest of the story and how Lia was going to fare and cope with the loss of Cassie on top of dealing with her issues before Cassie passed. The last few chapters had me in a grasp very few books get me into. I in no way can understand how this book would spur someone to not be at least slightly horrified as to what they are doing to their bodies and mental health and continue to carry on with either illness - which they may for a time - but the words and story will stick with them in the back of their minds as it reveals dangers they will continue to think of.Good, gripping and compelling read.

Goodreads Description- “Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.I am that girl.I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit. In her most emotionally wrenching, lyrically written book since the multiple-award-winning Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia’s descent into the powerful vortex of anorexia, and her painful path toward recovery. There have been plenty of books that I have read that I have thought that were really good and have rated them 5 stars. But then occasionally, not that often, a book comes along and absolutely takes your breath away. It makes you sit up and take notice. It also makes you realize that maybe all of the other books that you rated 5 stars were nothing close to the real thing.Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls is exactly that kind of book. This was recommended to me several months ago as part of a book club but for some reason I just didn't get around to reading it. Well I finally started it 2 days ago and when I did I didn't stop reading it until I was done. The characters were so real, so ugly at times, and so raw. The protagonist Lia, is anorexic and has just lost her best friend who died alone in a motel room. Lia is haunted by the fact that she has 33 missed calls from her friend Cassie and feels a great deal of guilt over her death. For Cassie was just as sick as Lia...she died of bulimia. Cassies starts haunting Lia and wants Lia to join her on the other side. To avoid the ghost Lia stops sleeping and starts exercising excessively. She only eats 500 calories a day. her goal weight starts at 95 pounds but each time she meets a goal she makes a new goal of 5 pounds less. Lia grows lanugo, baby fine hair, to hold in her body heat for she is always freezing. Lia cannot read anymore because she cannot thing right to make out the words. Lia has become a Wintergirl, a person lost between both worlds, and Cassie is waiting for her on the other side. There were some ugly facts presented about anorexia. It wasn't pretty. I'm glad Anderson didn't make it pretty. Maybe some teenager will read this book and take a different path.About the supporting characters...there were times I wanted to reach through the books pages and grab the adults in Lia's life and scream "Look at her! Can you not see that she is sick! She needs your attention! Give it to her and get her to a hospital!" But as they say "Denial isn't just a river in Egypt". It was obvious Lia couldn't control her parents divorce, her father's remarriage, her mother's controlling indifference. So she sought control elsewhere. Well she got it. And she so wanted the attention of someone and no adult in her life saw it. The only one who saw it was her 9 year old stepsister who told her friends that Lia had cancer to cover up the truth. It was a sad situation. The climax was so wonderfully written that I could easily imagine it on the big screen. It was beautiful and powerful. This is one of those rare books that really caught my soul. I wish there could be a rating for these special books to differentiate them from all the rest. This is definitely a 5 star book but also so much more. You absolutely must read this book!

It's taken me a long time to read a book by Laurie Halse Anderson....but she's definitely going on the must-read list.In Wintergirls, Anderson does what gives me toe-curls when I'm reading fiction-- an arresting, fascinating unreliable narrator who gives you entryway into what its like to experience the world outside of the "norm."Lia's best friend, Cassie, died alone in a hotel and now Lia's parents are tip-toeing around her, checking up on how much she eats, and forcing her to go to therapy sessions early.Lia plays the dutiful daughter, but Cassie's ghost is haunting her, taunting her about how much she eats. Soon Lia is nuking food in the microwave so the kitchen will smell, but burying the food so her parents won't know she isn't eating. She's painfully aware of the calories in even a tablespoon of cream cheese, and only feels in control when her weight gets closer and closer to her ideal of 95.0 pounds or she's letting loose all the bad feelings and hateful words through slicing her own flesh with razor blades.Wintergirls is written in Lia's inner monologue, crossed out words and all she won't even let herself think (she crosses out "mom" and substitutes "Dr. Marrigan" instead). It's a disjointed, haunting view of seeing the world through a self-hate lens, and Lia's voice will stay with you long after you put the book down. I was fascinated by the ring of truth behind Lia's strategies to fool her parents and also the voices of the other girls online.Probably not a book you'd want younger YA readers to attempt without some talk about anorexia, and self-destruction beforehand. Probably not a path you'd want to walk down if you're feeling emotionally vulnerable, either, as Lia's pain and that of her family is real and un-tempered.

I read the 'New Diet Revolution' book in around 2004 and for 6 months or so it really helped me and my health and also helped me lose weight.Dr Atkins is a brilliant doctor and author and in my opinion, human being.But. I'm not a fan though of the idea that losing a ton of weight per week is healthy, nor that soy products or rice cheese is a health food, or that Splenda or saccharin or protein bars are health foods. I also don't agree that commercially farmed grain-fed meats and commercial diary products are health foods and found it disappointing that pasture-fed meats etc. weren't talked about in the book. While the Atkins diet is hands down better than any low-fat or low calorie diet out there, it is not one I would recommend to others any more. I feel there are better ones out there, which take the best of what Atkins has to say and go a bit further with making it a really healthy diet.I did really well on the original Atkin's diet with 20 grams of carbohydrate a day diet for 6 - 9 months or so. I felt well and had no more hypoglycemia and lost a lot of weight. But after that 6 months was up my body seemed to really struggle with it, perhaps due to the fact I have severe metabolic, endocrine, and cardiac problems. (I'm housebound and 95% bedbound and very disabled.) When I finally went back up to 50 - 75 grams of carbs a day (years later) I felt so much better, and finally was able to start losing some of the weight that had crept back on on my super-low carb regime. It was also a much more pleasant way to eat; being able to have 5 cups of veggies a day and a bit of fruit! Not eating so much meat was also WONDERFUL!!! I feel like staying on this super-low carb diet for so long delayed my health from beginning to improve as well, as it made my body work harder than it had to on food assimilation which of course leaves less metabolic energy and bodily resources left over for the work of healing.Books such as Perfect Health Diet: Four Steps to Renewed Health, Youthful Vitality, and Long Life explain that eating very low carb and making your body convert proteins to carbs puts strain on the liver and uses up bodily resources, generates ammonia as a toxic by-product, puts a person at risk of glucose deprivation if the are ill or lacking in certain nutrients and makes nutrient deficiencies more likely due to lower fruit and vegetable intake. Very low carbohydrate intake can also cause problems with vitamin C utilisation that may even lead to scurvy, as vitamin C is stimulated by insulin. For these reasons they recommend eating an amount of carbs daily which is very close to how much the body actually needs; 200 - 400 carb calories daily (or roughly 50 - 100 grams of carbs daily). I agree with these authors that healthy people will likely have few problems converting one macronutrients to another (such as protein to carbs, and carbs to fat) but for those of us that are ill it is best to save your body the work and to eat foods in the appropriate macro-nutrient percentages to start with. That just seems to make so much sense!I really regret staying on Atkins as long as I did. But I just couldn't accept that the book was wrong, or that what worked for a while so well might be no longer working somehow. My very poor health is now finally very slowly improving and I feel my dietary change is playing a significant role in that.Where Dr Atkins really excels is in his book on nutrients and orthomolecular medicine. If you buy one book with Atkins written on the cover, make it Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution: Nature's Answer to Drugs for sure! That is a real 5 star book. It is still one of the best there is on this topic. It is an amazing achievement by Dr Atkins. I still refer to it regularly. I think it has just been re-released as an ebook too.For books on eating low-carb and high fat, and how to eat the foods we were designed to do best with and so improve your health through diet, I instead recommend books such as Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet for Total Health and a Longer Life (by far the best diet and health book I know of) and also The Primal Blueprint: Reprogram your genes for effortless weight loss, vibrant health, and boundless energy (Primal Blueprint Series) and Perfect Health Diet: Four Steps to Renewed Health, Youthful Vitality, and Long Life (without their 'safe starches!).5 stars for the work of Dr Atkins but only 3 stars for this problematic book.Jodi Bassett, The Hummingbirds' Foundation for M.E.

too many concerns about people developing liver problems on this diet.thou the diet works, you have to stay on it, forever, or gain the weight back, and at what long term cost to your health?

High protein meals have five beneficial effects for fat loss:- higher thermic effect of food 51-54- greater satiety 54, 67- decreased glycemic index and glycemic load of meals 54- enhanced usage of body fat as source of energy 54- maintenance of or increase in fat free mass when combined with exercise training 67, 68, which, in turn can result in prevention of fat gain and/ or slight, but effortless fat loss 68, 201.These effects are similar in lean and overweight individuals.202 Different types of protein sources produce slight variations in these five areas 54, 203, 204. However, the evidence is contradictory.54, 204 For example, while some studies found animal protein to be better for muscle creation and maintenance compared to vegetable protein; whey protein to be superior to casein and soy protein, in terms of thermic effect of food; and casein and soy protein to generate higher satiety compared to whey protein, other studies did not support these findings.References51. Just like any other fad diet, people will loose weight by cutting the carbohydrates from their diet. However, once people begin to add carbohydrates back into their diet, the weight returns. I have two friends who have followed the plan and when they "strayed" from the plan, they gained weight. What's the point of being able to have the sour cream when one can not have the potato! I found the diet far too restrictive. It sounded like an easy plan to follow from the start, but I quickly discovered how restrictive it was. It just goes to prove that the key to dieting is moderation and exercise. We all have the "tools" to do it without following any fad!

I tried out this diet after reading his book. It didn't work. I didn't lose any weight. I gained weight when I got off the diet. I should have read up on him before I read the book. There are many theories out there. But this physician died in 2003 considered 40 to 60 pounds overweight at 258lbs and had a history of congestive heart failure.

Review

“Valuable for its recovery of a largely neglected piece of labor history, particularly one in which race, class, immigration, and gender intersect, this work may prove most useful as a how-to guide for those looking to effect change in the landscape of the new economy. Look to Nadasen's history for an understanding of how the struggle began.”—Kirkus Reviews“An iconoclastic history of African American women who organized and lobbied to improve their working conditions.”—Shelf Awareness“Household Workers Unite is the story of “the help” helping themselves. GIVE IT TO: Anyone still gushing about The Help.”—Bitch“This is a story of extraordinary heroism of domestic workers fighting against difficult odds to attain dignity, respect, and fair pay for their hard work. Through offering us this revealing window into the past, Household Workers Unite deepens the hope and energy of all who work within today’s domestic worker rights movement...This book is inspiring, identifying and validating important tools for organizing and strategizing in today’s domestic labor struggles.”—New Solutions: Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health Policy“As the ugliness of racism today wrenches our hearts, rendering a feeling of helplessness, it is restorative to learn about the empowering leadership of black women domestic workers and civil rights activists who have helped change laws and policies—and to whom we are all indebted.”—Sheila Bapat, Feministing&Nadasen’s book is a powerful reminder that 20th century activism, led by some truly incredible women, has helped to make our present-day victories possible.”—Rachel M. Cohen, The American Prospect“One of the most daring labor movements of the civil rights era started not on the factory floor, but in the kitchen...Nadasen’s account comes at a particularly relevant moment...Household Workers Unite calls on feminists to once again redefine the workplace, together and on their own terms. Home may be where the heart is, but it’s also where the fight is.”—Michelle Chen, Ms.“Nadasen’s definitive history is a must-read for workers, activists, and historians. With insight and precision, she brings to life the dynamic women who, in their courageous pursuit of respect and justice, inspired many movements and future generations.”—Ai-jen Poo, director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) and codirector of the Caring Across Generations campaign“Premilla Nadasen offers a critically important look at a chapter encompassing the histories of labor, women and African Americans: the struggle of the African American domestic worker. Nadasen resurfaces a history of struggle that has been largely ignored and without which current efforts to organize domestic workers and other low-paid service workers cannot be fully understood. This book is a tribute to the thousands of Black women who were or are in this industry, and to those who took the courageous step to organize for fairness and justice. This was a book I could not stop reading."—Bill Fletcher, Jr., host of The Global African, activist, and author of “They’re Bankrupting Us!” And 20 Other Myths About Unions“Nadasen’s stirring account relies on the voices of household workers to expose the routine indignities and hopeful aspirations that encouraged some of the most disadvantaged American women workers to organize others. Nadasen’s empathetic, yet unflinching, narrative introduces us to a powerful form of historical storytelling. Bravo.”—Alice Kessler-Harris, author of A Woman’s Wage: Historical Meanings and Social Consequences“Here at last is the story that finally positions black domestic workers at the center of mid-twentieth-century civil rights and anti-racist movement history. In the process of fighting for their rights as citizen-workers, the women whose phenomenal lives are explored in Household Workers Unite forged a legacy that deeply informs our social justice struggles today.”—Angela Davis, Distinguished Professor Emerita, History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies, University of California, Santa Cruz“Household Workers Unite is a stellar scholarly achievement, a powerful and timely political contribution, and a must read for anyone seriously interested in the confluence of race, class, gender and citizenship in the lives of women of color, and in the historic struggles for social justice, in the 20th and 21st centuries.”—Barbara Ransby, Professor at University of Illinois at Chicago, Director of the Social Justice Initiative, and author of the award-winning Ella Baker and the Black Freedom Movement

Great book! Wasn't the quickest read, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot about amazing women that I had never heard of before, but we all should. I also had countless moments of thinking "oh wow I want to read more about that!", and by the end, probably half the citations in the end notes had been highlighted.

Execelent capture the history and culture of the Domestic work industry here in USA every worker should read this book.

Using the services of household workers is a long tradition in America. In the early days, there were slaves in the South and servants in the North who cleaned, cooked, did laundry, shopped, took care of the babies, children, ill, and elderly, and prepared for guests. After the slavery was ended, many families could not afford to hire all those people so the each of the remaining staff had to perform several duties.. The situation changed greatly after Dr. Benjamin Spock published his best-selling book about baby and child care. In it, he stressed the need for mothers to be more involved with nurturing and bonding with their children. The household worker’s position within the family changed as the children’s relationship with them lessened. As the women’s movement advanced and more women went to work outside the home, household workers responsibilities changed again. As more white women moved into the workforce, the need for household workers increased. The purpose of welfare changed, as well. Originally, in the 1930s, it was an important source for single mothers. White society began see welfare as a social ill and decided that women of color should be working rather than staying home since more jobs were available. More recently, the employers wanted less personal involvement. Training centers were established to help the workers learn new skills. One thing remained constant: The workers, usually black women, continued to be overworked, underpaid, and taken for granted. They often put in long hours but were not paid for overtime. They had to leave their own children and household tasks to maintain their employment. They received no benefits–minimum wages, vacation or sick days, overtime, Social Security, Workmen’s Compensation, health insurance–and could be fired at whim, for example, when they got old, without any severance pay. While many of their employers considered the women to be “one of the family,” the member they most resembled was Cinderella. Often they had to enter through the back door, use a separate bathroom, could not eat what or where the family ate, and certainly were not among the people with whom the employers socialized. The household workers were often given leftover food and no longer wearable clothing. They rarely received raises and had little chance for advancement. Some of the major reasons this situation existed was that the women worked in isolated locations and were fearful of being fired since they needed the income to support themselves and their families. But eventually some black women realized that there was a way to reach all these women: Public places like on the buses they rode to and from work. Using information gathered from talking with the women involved, Premilla Nadasen wrote HOUSEHOLD WORKERS UNITE to tell the stories of these women and the efforts to improve their lives through unionizing. The one thing most of the women wanted most was respect. Their employees might brag among themselves about how well the women served their needs, but would talk around them as if they weren’t even there. Many workers preferred doing household work and thought it was better than working in factories. Since housework was not recognized as real work, the household workers were excluded from key labor laws. As white women began working outside the home and immigration from Europe was curtailed, the number of black domestic workers rose from 28% in 1900 to 60% in 1950. In 1924, the United Daughters of the Confederacy launched a campaign to erect a federally funded “black mammy” monument in Washington DC. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but died in the Senate.” It was opposed by African American activists becuse they believed it glorified slavery and black subservience. When the activists worked to improve the conditions for household workers, they included women of all races and national origin. Soon, however, most of the non-black women dropped out. One major event that brought the situation of household workers to the forefront was the Montgomery Bus Boycott. At the start, more than half the black women workers in Montgomery were employed in white homes and relied on public transportation. Their labor was indispensable to the white community, many of whose members blamed the boycott on outside agitators. The didn’t believe their black household workers would participate in such an activity on their own. But the boycott created an opening for workers to express their political views and question the terms of their employment. Their employment in the homes of white people gave the black household workers intimate knowledge of what was being said and done in those houses as well as access to the people in power. Often the family members and their friends would discuss things without even realizing their conversations were being overheard: The household workers were indivisible to them. At the same time, some of them, especially those more actively involve, were closely monitored. They could not talk to each other. Their telephone usage was restricted. Intercom systems were used to spy. And they were fired without pay. The book focuses on activism from 1950s through 1970s and is arranged on the basis of the people who led the movement and the organizations they established. There is some overlap because of that and at times the names of the numerous organizations became difficult to remember. A listing, separate from the notes and index, would have proved helpful. I recognized the names of several of the leaders, some of whom worked in my own city. I was going to list them but decided that while the leaders were extremely important, it was the household workers themselves who took the risks which enabled them to achieve as much as they did. The struggle continues. HOUSEHOLD WORKERS UNITE was an eyeopener about what life was like for the workers and how working together, through organization, can bring about necessary change. It might be the only thing that can. It was a scholarly read, heavily noted, and quite detailed. I received a copy of this book through LibraryThing Early Reviewers.

This book seeks to counteract the pop cultural trope that black domestic workers (maids) are passive and loving mammies (see The Help, Gone with the Wind, etc) Domestic workers acted as the backbone to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and other civil rights projects. Without the support of black domestics, who made up the bulk of bus riders, the boycott would have been dead on arrival. These women also participated in a positive way by cooking and selling food to raise money for the boycott. One of the domestics profiled in the book provided a safe place (and safe food) for Martin Luther King during the boycott.Their participation in the civil rights movement gave these black women the organizing experience and confidence to agitate for better working conditions. Before they began to organize, the jobs of black domestics were hellish (not that they get treated like Silicon valley CEOs now). Women were picked up at “slave markets” downtown, physically examined, partially paid in leftovers and hand-me-downs, paid starvation wages, and in general treated as less than human.Organizing workers is always an uphill battle, but organizing domestic workers was like climbing a sheer mountain face. They’ve all got different employers, they all work in different locations, and after scrubbing the floor on their hands and knees they don’t necessarily have the energy to organize and attend a meeting. In addition to this, domestic workers have traditionally been ignored by the established industrial unions. The author details the various groups these women formed. The domestics developed model contracts, training programs, and petitioned legislatures for the extension of workplace protections. Household work had not been legally been considered work. As a result, domestic workers were not subject to the minimum wage or workplace safety laws. The author’s major of theme of this book is the importance of storytelling to these women. Getting together to vent their frustration about how cheap Mrs. Smith is instills a sense of solidarity in these women. Additionally, when maids have to discuss how awful their jobs are in public hearings, it gains them sympathy for their cause of better work conditions. These brave African American women were able to score some victories. The minimum wage was extended to domestic workers (some of them anyway) and they do have some basic workplace protections. The fact that they were able to organize and achieve anything in the face of many obstacles is really impressive.By writing this book and working with domestic workers organizations, Premilla Nadasen, professor of history at Barnard College, has her heart in the right place. Unfortunately this book comes off as overly academic. I wish that the author could liven up her writing style. The strongest parts of the book are when the author is conveying and quoting the stories of the domestics. I also wish that there had been more than four photographs in the book. It’s helpful to have a face go with a name. Despite my criticism of the writing style, this is a well-researched history that fills a void and I learned a good deal. I hope that in the future the author considers doing an oral history project of present day domestic workers.

Before reading this book, I had a limited knowledge of current issues surrounding domestic workers. I also also aware of the stereotypes of domestic work and workers in both the past and present in the United States, as I'm sure most Americans are. I had essentially no knowledge about the household workers movement described in this book, which is remarkable considering how many years the movement stretches over. The book is a detailed account of so much work done by black women to fight for household worker's rights. Because I knew so little about it beforehand, I was fascinated by the information in the book. There was exploration of the role both race and gender played in the struggle and how the view of housework as being separate from the work world leads to household workers' rights being overlooked in comparison to the rights of other workers.I'm glad this book exists because I don't think this is a topic written about as often as it should be, and it deals with an issue that includes the intersectionality of race and gender. If you're at all interested in this topic, I would recommend this book.I received this book through Goodreads First Reads for an honest review.

I really liked this book. From the very beginning where the author gave definitions of commonly used terms, to all the reference information with links to tools that are free and help check seo work done by you or others, to the checklist that brings it all together. If it is too simple and does not contain all the tricks, I wouldn't know. However, it seems valuable and cleared up a lot of questions I had. After reading, I feel like I was being taken advantage off before and now will know what to look for in the future. I recommend it.

Hey! I am a local business owner in Austin, TX and I read Tom's book to help me understand what SEO is and how it can benefit my small business! I normally hire someone else to manage my SEO, so I read Tom's book in order to give me a better background to what he/she is doing for me SEO-wise. I wanted to know the language so that I could either do it myself or better communicate with my hire. All in all, SUPER straight-forward read, thanks Tom!
