This is a very short book but with very good insights into the evolution of: the Cable industry, the sports TV and broadcasting and of course ESPN central role in all this.If you are interested in startups, entrepreneurship and keeping up afloat of new disruptive technologies, then this book can give you some idea of why sometimes they lose money or don't have earnings despite their high revenues and great future prospects. This quote form the book comes to mind:“Gentlemen, I would like to equate ESPN with an oil well,” he would say. “Seismic indicated there was a reservoir, and we determined that was true. Experience has shown that the reservoir is there and is a hell of a lot bigger than we originally thought. Unfortunately, it is also deeper than we thought. So I need more pipe.”It is also a book about creating, managing and maintaining a brand.

At first you might be forgiven for thinking that this book is a little too specialised, targeting a niche of a niche as it were, yet strangely the tale of the creation and expansion of an American sports television channel is rather fascinating, managing to serve several audiences at the same time.Unless you are particularly interested in sports programming or the broadcast television industry, ESPN might not mean so much to you; especially the further you are away from the United States. Yet this company has grown and probably exceeded the wildest dreams of its founders and there is a good chance that you could have seen some ESPN output and didn’t know it.If you are focussed on the broadcast industry you have one great story, if you are more interested in business start-ups and development here is another. If you are a generalist there’s a good story to tell, and the professional or academic can take other things out of this for their own particular needs. Dependent on your interest, you may skip a few pages here and there, yet overall you still are given an interesting, credible and powerful read.Whilst the trials and tribulations of “the early days” are satisfactorily covered, the book particularly focuses on the post-1998 activities of the company as it branched out to become a multi-country, multi-platform and multi-output behemoth. Some attempts at diversification failed; yet you can still learn from the mistakes of others. Rather a lot has worked though!Some of the anecdotes placed in the book really made it shine, even if it was not the intention. Something simple as this quotation of an event straight after the channel’s launch in 1979: “…the Washington Post’s Jane Leavy asked the new outlet’s president, Chet Simmons, how he thought the public would respond to an all-sports cable TV network. ‘I guess we’ll have to have a battery of divorce lawyers standing by to handle all the cases,’ Simmons quipped. ‘Did you ever think that a television network would be named as a co-respondent in a divorce action?’ Three years later, a woman in Austin, Texas, actually did name ESPN in her divorce suit. She claimed it ruined her marriage by offering her apparently addicted husband too much sports coverage.”Simple; and still new to this reviewer who spent nearly a decade covering the European satellite and cable television industry. Or harmless, such as this quoted factoid: “On January 26, 2000, Alisha and Chad Blondeel of Newaygo, Michigan, named their newborn son Espen — a tribute to Chad’s favorite TV channel.” (In 2004 as part of the channel’s 25th anniversary, they had a report featuring eleven children who had been celled Espen or Espn, all since the channel’s launch.)For those who care about such things, this book also features a comprehensive index and very extensive bibliography for further reading and source checking.This was a surprising find; the book appears to be a lot more attractive and desirable than one originally expected. It was an enjoyable read, even to somebody who cannot abide televised sports. Look past the sport towards the organisation and here, for this reviewer, was the best story.

I'm far from a sports fanatic, but on the other hand, I've got a long history of mostly non hands-on participation that dates back to the 1950s, when I loved to watch the Gillette-sponsored Friday night boxing matches with my dad - on our black-and-white TV set (complete with rabbit ears, no less). Later, I was a die-hard viewer of ABC's "Wide world of Sports" that launched in 1961, and I waited impatiently for the every-four-year coverage of my beloved Olympic games. My heart was in my throat as my hero, Jean-Claude Killy, schussed his way to wins in all three Alpine events in the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France. And who could forget late sportscaster Jim McKay's emotional, "They're all gone" as he reported on the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics?Except for the Olympics, which now come at us every two years (and with far less impressive TV coverage, IMHO), those other programs have long since come and gone. But on Sept. 7, 1979, another sports phenomenon emerged: ESPN (the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network). It hit the ground running, and - although I learned from this book that it didn't turn a profit until 1985 - it's pretty safe to say it's become a household acronym. In 2014, as the author points out, ESPN was named the "world's most valuable media property."Today, I'd bet the farm that not a day goes by that my husband and I - separately or together - tune in to some kind of ESPN show. Virtually every weeknight, you'll find our set tuned to one of my favorite shows, "Pardon the Interruption," to watch the sparring between hosts Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon.So it was that when I was granted the opportunity to read and review this by the publisher (via NetGalley), I jumped at the chance. Let me be perfectly clear, though: This is a scholarly publication. If you're expecting witty quotes from famous athletes or network executives or smack-on-the-butt locker room jokes, you'll be disappointed. Rather, it's a straightforward and exceptionally well-researched documentation of how ESPN and all its offshoots - from the magazine to books to made-for-TV movies and docudramas - came to be.Initially, it was to a degree a matter of right place, right time, given more public interest in sports, the emergence of cable TV and increasing deregulation of the communications industry. But transforming that beginning into the media powerhouse as we know it certainly didn't happen by accident; the author details almost every step of the route to success, such as the launch of "SportsCentury," a concept headed by Mark Shapiro that helped bring much-needed credibility to the network.The well-written book reads almost like a doctoral dissertation - albeit a much more interesting one than the few I helped edit back in my days as a university administrator - complete with extensive references at the end (close to 25% of the book is comprised of footnote and other resources, most arranged by chapter). I had the pleasure of meeting Diane at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show in Seattle and immediately fell in love with her joyful colorful paintings. I was with a group of friends or I would have otherwise spent a great deal of time in her booth. Of all the wonderful things I saw that day I couldn't get Diane's paintings out of my mind. So when I got home I found her website and explored it and was able to see some of her other pieces. I also noticed she had a new book to be released so I pre-ordered it. I received it and I'm making my way through the beginning phase of the book and examining my own doodles. I don't plan to rush through her book but instead simply absorb and learn as I go. It's set up in stages/chapters/practices so you can work (or should I say play) your way through the book. I'm very happy I purchased this book and looking forward to the painting phase where I can turn my doodles in to elevated artwork. Thanks for writing this book Diane!!

I love this book!! I own many art books ( I believe you can never own enough.). I keep coming back to this one. I love the doodle aspect so I don't feel so much pressure. The drawing turns out beautiful with Diane's instructions. I love her art classes online also. She is amazing.

This book is amazing! Written by a true artist with heart and also so easy for people who don't normally paint go from their doodles to painting. Highly recommended.

I have art books where I look at the pictures and they go right onto the bookcase shelf, and I have art books that I keep by my bed and pour over and learn from and keep reading. Diane's book belongs in the latter category. I figure that if I pick up one thing from an accomplished artist whether from a book or a class, the money has been well spent, and from Diane I learned about line quality. I learned that strong lines tell a different story than do soft lines and that lines created with the sweep of my arm are vastly different than those made with a slight wrist movement. I learned that mark-making of any kind is valuable and can be made and incorporated into art with a little imagination and a lot of trust. It's a lovely book, one from which I'm sure I'll keep learning. Thank you, Diane!

I can't explain why I love this book so much, but I do. I carry it downstairs to my workroom with me, and back upstairs, and downstairs, and back up again. It's stirred dormant yearnings in me and has resulted in a harvest of drawings that genuinely please me. Culhane's discussion, instruction, and illustrations about the nature and quality of lines affected me like, I dunno, like super vitamins? They ignited something in me, and that something is burning brightly indeed. And, also, apparently, in my capable six-year-old granddaughter who came to me one evening and proudly handed me several drawings unlike any I'd ever seen her do previously, that looked to me as though she too had been strongly (and secretly) inspired by the cover of Culhane's book which I had been keeping handy on the dining table for several days.In conclusion, just thinking about Culhane's book makes me feel energized and inspired. However, I haven't started any paintings yet. I'm still being thrilled with the instruction about drawings and Culhane's creative method of assembling them into larger works of art. Maybe tomorrow.

I was directly inspired in my art by this book. It gave me the confidence to doodle on all sorts of bits and pieces, scraps of paper, receipts, etc while I'm out and about in the world and then bring them home to stick dow in my art journal and create a spread. It also helped with loosening up and embracing a more abstract aesthetic - trying to be expressive and impressionistic than literal and tight in my artwork. Although the title suggests that this is a book for beginners or those who have not drawn in a long time, as a moderately experienced artist I have found it very inspiring in taking the next steps in my art journey. I have included a couple of images of the art journal pages I have made inspired by this book....

Great concept, I think this book would be good for a confident beginner, it does not have step by step projects which I think is good, art is about using YOUR imagination not copying someone else's artwork. The artist does show how she develops her projects in a helpful manner. I bought the book because I wanted to look at the picture since I like the way she draws. I really enjoyed seeing the very big wall project that she was working on after having seen tiny pieces. I liked what she wrote as well, I rarely read all the art books I buy, I just like looking at the pictures.

A lovely, easy to follow, instructive book with wonderful illustrations. I sat doodling and was immediately struck by the shapes around which had, hitherto, eluded me. The very act of doodling opened up a well of inspiration. I cannot wait to get into my studio tomorrow.

Bazeley's book meets the mark for substance, clarity, organization and interpreting complex topics in relatable ways for readers. The book recognizes that readers of the book will range from novices to this type of research such as graduate level students embarking on dissertation or thesis work for the first time to seasoned academics working on in-depth research and documentation. It is helpful to all levels of researchers and authors. As the mixed methods of research combining qualitative and quantitative methods become increasingly identified as necessary to capture the full picture of what is being studied, we need contemporary books on research to continually update the models and practices.The website that aligns with the book is also helpful and connects users to myriad resources.

Mixed Methods always seems like it will provide you with the best of all things. The idea that the two modalities are antithetical to each other is outdated and there has been a great deal of work done on how the two approaches are able to build a more comprehensive, applicable, specific, AND generalizable view of phenomena.

I'd rate this with high marks for a refresher or introduction. Excellent text for college level courses or get up to speed fast for professionals. As a college instructor who performs quite a bit of consulting and writing, this is a solid reference that doesn't require a lot of effort. I've had hamsters since I was a little kid. I'm an older adult now. This book was filled with information ranging on date differences and activity differences between a variety of Dwarfs and between Dwarfs and Syrians, etc. I really learned something new which is saying something because I studied all about hamsters during the course of my lifetime. The book covers an introduction to the dwarf hamster and how they differ from other rodents sold at pet stores. Then, the author presents the history of the Dwarf hamster inclusive of each history for Chinese, Roborovski, Russian, Winter White, and Campbell's Dwarf hamster breeds. The author continues with the physical character differences: vision, hearing, smell, determining gender, personality/behavior. The author further describes common concerns: how many to purchase, how they interact with kids or other pets, allergies, and pros/cons. There is what to expect when owning these types of hamsters and how to tell if they are healthy (even to how the teeth look - talk about detail). There is recommendation to transporting the pet, and transitioning to pet's new home. Are you getting tired yet because there are 5 more pages of table of content. HA! No-joke! The author even talks about lighting and humidity not to mention diet and how to recognize signs of illness coming on and recommended aid to prevention or when to see the vet. There's of course the breeding section for those who want baby hamsters running around. Finally, there are misc. topics including what breeds are susceptible to diabetes, answering frequent questions, and even listing breeders in the US, Canada, and UK plus some added websites to view. My hands are tired from writing all that so you can see it is a boat-load of information. Information is found in the book for about 90 pages: the rest is content table, glossary, breeders list, etc. I'd say that it is for 10 years old and up type of reading (few photos).

My all-time favorite Hamster Book!I've read several hamster books in the past and just wasn't particularly impressed.This book specifically focused on Dwarf Hamsters has been the most helpful and complete.I found the author to be a hands-down expert on the subject of all species of Dwarf Hamsters and the information was extremely helpful as we are rearing and managing our Robo Hamsters.Articulate, well researched, clearly presented information that will ensure your success with hamsters of any species, but particularly, of course, the Dwarfs.Because I already am pretty well informed about hamsters, I was pleased to learn even more but could discern that the information is indeed accurate and helpful.Recommend to anyone!

A very refreshing book. Wonderful simple ways to simplify your kitchen.

A wonderful little book full of detail and thoughtful consideration!

I found out about this book, Kitchen Simplicity, by listening to Tiny House Lifestyle Podcast by Ethan Waldman.This book, Kitchen Simplicity, is about simplifying your kitchen for smaller living.The author finds living in smaller places liberating. She teaches that just because you may live in a smaller home whether it be a van, car, bus, apartment, or a tiny house you can still have a love for food. It might be a challenge if you are used to living in a much bigger place. Nonetheless, there is still some magic in the kitchen even if you are short on space.There is a purpose in the kitchen if one just thinks about it simply. One doesn’t really need a dishwasher and it will just take up space you can use for other things.The author came from a background where they made do, grew much of their own food, and they still made magnificent tasting food! This is where her love for food came from.When you live in a tiny you develop creativity.Balance in the number of things you own. In a tiny, she says that everything should have a place.In addition, after you get your dishes dirty then wash them soon afterward. There isn’t a great amount of leeway in the tiny kitchen, for anything to be just sitting around dirty, claiming that space.Carmen states that when you decide to go tiny make a keep pile and a go pile. Downsizing can be stressful according to the author. We all know that sentiment if one has ever kept that special memory of something, that has a tender spot in our heart. Choose your favorite one or two and bring them with you. Don’t forget why you are going tiny.If friends or family still like giving gifts then give them some gift ideas. Such as a gift card to a restaurant or gas station. Then you don’t have to hurt someone’s feelings by refusing their gift.Carmen goes on in depth in her book to challenge you what you put in your kitchen to make your food. Let it bring you joy whatever it is that is in the kitchen.She also has several more chapters to help you learn to navigate your tiny kitchen in ways maybe you haven’t thought of yet. If you live in a tiny house or van or an RV then you will get pleasure from hearing about simplicity from a chef’s point of view. Even if you don’t live where you have a minuscule amount of kitchen space, I dare say you can find some new ideas.The author teaches if it doesn’t bring you joy then don’t have it. “Having too much creates a burden but simplicity sets you free.”

It is time to re-think how we live, and Carmen Shenk has started us in the right direction. Raised as a Mennonite, simplicity comes naturally to Carmen. However, it wasn’t until she found herself escaping an abusive marriage that Carmen realized the importance of peace of mind. Living large had done little for her self-esteem, self-reliance and quest for love—change came in the form of a converted van that she soon called home. Since that time the author has blossomed into an advocate for tiny house living and a minimalist lifestyle.Carmen’s first book, Kitchen Simplicity, shows how the previous chef and restaurateur, whips up her favorite recipes with basic tools in a small space. Carmen shows us how little room is required to cook fresh clean healthy food without compromise. Are there challenges? You bet. However, Carmen has created a road map to help us through. This map addresses what we need and what we can eliminate. It also encourages us to look at how we think about how we live. What are we compromising to have so much? What dreams have we put on indefinite hold? Are we living beyond our means? How much of our life has become throw-away and what can we fill the emptiness with besides more stuff? Deep questions often come with simple answers if we know where to look and the kitchen is the place to start.

I met Carmen and Xaver at Tiny House Festival in Pink Hill, NC. A beautiful couple. My personal interaction with them underscores the genuine lifestyle they have chosen for themselves. Carmen shares some of her life experiences her book the "Kitchen Simplicity". I enjoyed the book and the references she provided. Kitchen Simplicity is an easy read full of great tips, tried and true tiny house kitchen living. I will be incorporating many of her methods into my future tiny house living. I like the personal life touches/stories that lead to Carmen's quest for a purpose filled life. This is a book that I will keep in my tiny library for future reference.

I love how this book helped me see my own home through the author's lens of simplicity and how it jump-started new ideas for me about how to organize my kitchen better. Even now, a week after I finished the book, I am still evaluating how I set up my kitchen, what's necessary and loved, and what is just taking up space. I have a renewed energy for my de-cluttering efforts. I also loved Carmen's approach of keeping her home a haven, and actively keeping out the negative energy that abounds in the world. I read the first two paragraphs and felt like we were kindred spirits. Carmen Shenk addresses topics that can be applied to any lifestyle; not just the tiny house movement. She writes with honesty and humor, which made the book an enjoyable read. I have no intention of living in a tiny house, but I do sometimes feel I have too many "Things". I think Carmen's approach was a common sense one that can be applied to anyone looking to have fewer possessions and more experiences.
