I too thought there would be a little 3D in this book, but I can understand why there isn't. 3D Game programming is absurdly complex. You need to get the basic concepts and feel of game programming down in 2D (well, it's a good idea anyway).Many complain about not finding the CD Key... it's on a card that sticks out like a sore thumb in the back of the book. Look a little harder.This book is not a comprehensive guide to game or direct x programming (or Delphi). However, what it can do is provide you with the means to jump right in and make a game. What I'm talking about is ready-made basic 2D game engine's that can be modified to do just about anything. The book gets you the basics on graphics, sound, sprites, controls (even force feedback), special effects and a bit more.I was introduced to this book by taking a graphics class in my 4th year of college. We barely used the book (because we only touched a little direct x at the end), but I spent the end of that winter break and much of the following months making a Tetris style puzzle game. If you can get the example programs to compile/run, you should be able to modify them to do your bidding.

I recently bought this book and it is, as several reviewers say, out of date (not the author's fault although it would be nice if the publisher came out with an updated version). Several reviewers also, however, comment that the book is worthless because the Delphi 4 version does not come with the key. This is a problem. However, the authorization code is available on the publisher website ([...] Of course, Borland has come out with several versions of Delphi since then but Delphi 4 is still a good compiler and a great way to start up with Delphi (especially if you aren't wanting to get into .NET right away).I'm pleased that I bought this book and am looking forward to experimenting with the code. As author Ayres points out, he's trying to equip us to write shareware games, not become professional game developers for slave-labor game shops.

I really looked forward to getting this book, partly because of how long it took to publish and partly because there is a real shortage of technical Delphi books on the less common topics. While there is some useful information for a beginner, I was sorely disappointed.This book certainly does not live up to the hype - here is an extract from the Wordware site regarding this title:"() from the most basic sprite movement through tile-based scrolling map engines, voxel engines, texture mapping, and 3-D first-person shooter engines."Voxel engines? 3D engine? If mentioning it makes a book, I'm becoming an author.The book is so basic that it isn't even worthwhile for a beginner - rather buy the excellent books by Andre LaMothe and learn a little C so that you can translate it. The chapters in Charlie Calvert's Delphi Unleashed books are more than adequate to get you started with DirectX and Delphi.One thing that concerns me about some of the reviews is that some people that claim (not that I dispute it) to be professional game developers dropped Delphi as a result of this poor book. I don't get it! Why do you need a "Delphi" book? Can't you apply your C/C++ knowledge, after learning Delphi? To those people, my only suggestion is that you read a couple of general Delphi books (and there are a number of excellent ones), dabble with the JEDI DirectX translation and get going - you certainly don't need a book to teach you what you already know just because you changed language.And a last request - someone please write a decent game programming book for Delphi.

Two days after my order shipped, I read other customers reviews for this book, and thought I had bought a lemon. Quite the contrary. This book is a godsend for those of us creating games, and not interested in acquiring PHD's in "Theoretical Aspects of DirectX Implementation and Their Implications for Quantum Physics." Microsoft may make the most user-fruendly OS on the market, but when it comes to developer APIs, MS makes the most convoluted, user-unfriendly, documentation sparse code out there.Ever wondered why some many programmer's re-invent the wheel and emulate MS APIs with their own original code? I am an intermediate programmer and find the most time-wasting part of coding is try to interface with MS APIs - they are a nightmare to work with. As for this book, I say buy it. Personally, I found about half of the book to be stuff that I already know. What made the book worthwhile were the specific examples of implementing it in DirectX. True you can find some of the info on the web. But most is poorly documented or overly complicated - I don't care how DirectX does what it does, I just want to know how to implement it with the fewest migraines. This book accomplishes that superbly.Unlike most Delphi books which can spend upwards of 50 pages covering REALLY basic stuff, Ayres only spends a 1-2 pages to refresh your memory of the concepts, before diving into how to best implement it using DirectX. You should already be familiar with the basics of DirectX, bitmap and GDI manipulatiion via TBitmap / TCanvas, sprite animation, MCI / sound playback, etc. before purchasing this book. Background on these topics is minimal, the majority of the book and it's examples show how to get them working under DirectX, and point out many of the MS-centric quirks and how to avoid them.Buy this book. If you already know the stuff covered in it, then buy it anyway.

I just recently read "Between the Lines" and I was very pleased with how easy it was to read along with how useful the material was in the book. The author is very detailed, so you do not have to be a sports psychologist to understand the content. One of my favorite topics the author covered was the difference between a "Hit" and a "Quality at Bat." Too many times hitters feel their at bat was a failure just because it wasn't recorded as a "hit" in the book. "Between the Lines" helped me to realize that a solid hit that the defense makes a good play on is still a good quality at bat. If hitters take that approach (quality at bats over hits) then their confidence will be higher, leading to more hits.I have been an avid softball player for over 15 years, and a coach for six. I wish I would have read this book when I was player, but now that I have as a coach, I make all my players read it! I really have seen great improvements, especially from my players who tend to lose confidence in their abilities easily.

Neuroscience and computer science have advanced considerably since Von Neumann, one of the founders of the modern computer, discussed these subjects in The Computer and the Brain.I do not believe, for example, that the text contains any insights that have not been picked up on by more recent authors.There are, however, good reasons to purchase this book. Obviously, if one wants to look at the history of human understanding of artificial intelligence the work is an important foundation.But, more profoundly, Von Neumann discusses the architecture of the computer and what was known about the brain in such easily comprehensible prose that the book is also a good introductory essay. Being less than 100 pages, it is also a relatively quick read.If then, you are looking for the most up to date neuroscience and artificial intelligence theory you should not choose this work. But as a landmark historical essay and a good introduction to these fields the book is, beyond doubt, a good choice.

Perhaps more so than Alan Turing, (If we accept the intro by Kirtzweil, a man with serious credentials), John von Neuman was one of the most important figures in developing the basic architecture of the modern digital computer. The two did work together, but von Neuman was the senior and I propose had a better grasp of the juncture of math and machine.The Computer and the Brain is the last published work by von Neuman and was an attempt to bring together what was known about the machine qualities of the brain and what the machines of 1957 might one day be able to accomplish.As such almost everything is dated and new discoveries in neuroscience more so than in computers place limits on the absolute value of his comments.That said, there was a head line in recent science news that there is a prototype computer in testing that combines both digital and large scale parallel computing in the manner von Neuman suggests as the model for how the brain may work.The Computer and the Brain is the printed from of a lecture. He was too ill (mortally) for the series he was offered to conduct. So great was the respect for the man that he was allowed to present only these papers, sufficient for one lecture and about 3 hours reading. I do not think he read the paper; he had just the strength to write it.Besides having been a vitally important mathematician, he was active in the cause of scientific ethics and as the man who drafted the letter, signed by Einstein credited with America committing to atomic research he is therefore a originator of the atomic age. He was a man of great thought and influence.Reading this book is a chance to listen to a great mind. I make no claim to have understood all of it. I suspect that no one should read it in an effort to be at the leading edge of math, computers or neurology. It is a hard, but worth it read, and a glass into our recent history.

As other reviews stated; great for the history lesson, and the introduction is excellent--and worth buying for that alone. The actual content of von Neumann's focus isn't particularly useful for modern work, at least in the context that I am working on.

This monograph is worth reading to get a sense of how von Neumann approached a problem using his mathematical intuition. I found it a valuable if short read.

The book is mildly interesting from an historical perspective about what von Neumann was thinking about before he died, but really not that useful from a neuroscience point of view.

John von Neumann was the principal architect (in 1945) of the design from which all subsequent electronic computers trace their lineage. As he was dying of bone cancer, this giant of 20th Century mathematics and physics wrote the last of his 150 research papers, "The Computer and the Brain".In 80 pages, von Neumann describes the key components and processes of computers and of brains and then analyzes their similarities and differences. Developments in both computer science and neuroscience during the intervening six decades have corroborated his overall analysis. Von Neumann had a better grasp in 1956 than proponents of AI have today of what differentiates artificial intelligence (computers) from biological intelligence (brains). In the last section of "The Computer and the Brain", von Neumann goes to considerable lengths to explain exactly how computers differ from brains:"It should also be noted that the message-system used in the nervous system, as described in the above, is of an essentially statistical character. In other words, what matters are not the precise positions of definite markers, digits, but the statistical characteristics of their occurrence, i.e., frequencies of periodic or nearly periodic pulse-trains, etc."Thus the nervous system appears to be using a radically different system of notation from the ones we are familiar with in ordinary arithmetic and mathematics. Instead of the precise systems of markers where the position--and presence or absence--of every marker counts decisively in determining the meaning of the message, we have here a system of notations in which the meaning is conveyed by the statistical properties of the message. If you are going to take a trip to another country, I Highly recommend using the Lonely Planet as your guide. These Books are always well organized and easy to read. The Guide books always include information on the best sights. They have hotel choices for every budget. I have been to 32 countries and every continent except Antarctica. I always use the Lonely Planet for practical information. They always include a section of "Dangers and Annoyances" which can help make your trip more enjoyable.

The only reason for four instead of five stars is that this did not match my 1980's experience with an LP guide for Indonesia. This guide will take you through Botswana and Namibia with great guidance, and do it well. You can travel well with this guide, but I miss the old Lonely Planet aesthetic. LP used to be about rustic travel, now it seems to be about finding experiences that people can put on Instagram and selfie their way through.I admit that I'm retrograde.

Got this guide and the one by Bradt for Botswana. The reference to the safari bookings website make it all the more worthwhile. The two books cover what I needed.

Compact, packed with useful information, good for travelling.

I dont get reimbursed the Import Fees Deposit.

Chock full of great information on the best places to go in Botswana and Namibia and since it's just published it's very up to date. It is helping me plan a road trip around Namibia and finding places that are not on the top of the list. The only issue is that the Kindle version is riddled with formatting problems so the nice clear graphics are totally muddled in sections which is a shame

About the Author

Ralph Brody, Ph.D. passed away on February 8, 2006. Dr. Brody was previously on the faculty of Cleveland State University where he taught social policy and human service administration. He also taught graduate courses on human service delivery models at Case Western Reserve University. Previously, he served for fifteen years as the executive director of the Federation for Community Planning, an organization that provides research, planning and advocacy on health and human services. Dr. Brody authored books on case management, the state legislative process, fundraising events, community problem solving, service learning, and macro practice. Dr. Brody’s many years as a manager and teacher convinced him that the issues facing those in human service organizations were universal and applied to boards of directors as well as NGOs. He dedicated himself to developing tools to enhance the understanding and skills of those in leadership roles, from Cleveland to India, Spain, Ghana, Ethiopia, Egypt and Nigeria. His frequent workshops in Kenya led to the translation of his casebook into the Swahili language. His co-authored book with Dr. Nair: Grassroot Development – Establishing Successful Microenterprises has been published in English and Malayalam language. Dr. Brody’s work touched millions, and his contributions will continue to educate, inform and inspire future students and professionals in human services field.

Incredibly dull reading that was required for graduate work. Useful information can be mined out especially thanks to the handy lists and italicized words found in text that draws attention to pertinent information, but everything else can be skipped over.

I am traveling to Sri Lanka this fall and I was looking for a good book that was part history & part travelogue. Cherry Briggs provided both. She followed the journal of a British civil servant from the 1880s and retraced his travels. She writes about her experiences and juxtaposed them to the experiences/reflections of the British traveler. In addition, she writes about the civil war between the north and the south and managed to explain the issues that brought the discord to the island. Cherry created a picture of Sri Lanka today..the good and the bad. It's a well done book.

Travel guides to Sri Lanka give readers very little idea of what the island and its people are like; Cherry Briggs portrays the nation as it really is. The book is very cleverly organized around the itineraries of Colonial Secretary Sir James Emerson Tennent in 1845-50. She roughs it on buses and tuk-tuks, but also stays in some up-scale tourist destinations. She shows some dramatic contrasts (Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Kalpitiya), but also some surprising continuities. I could quibble about many of the historical details, but they don't matter as much as the authenticity of her perceptive observations about the people: their culture, habits good and bad, attitudes towards the British (and each other), even their hair. Her descriptions, especially the bus rides, brought back vivid recollections of my own experiences 50 years ago.

Cherry is many many steps above the "I'm flipping my travel diary into a book" and Sri Lanka is a wonderful country to live in, particularly if irony tickles your fancy.

I learned a lot about Sri Lanka in a way that was really very enjoyable. Well written and oftentimes amusing.

I read this book immediately after my visit to SL. Thoroughly enjoyable and easy to read, it gave me a better appreciation of the beautiful people and customs of the country.

Read it in preparation for trip to Sri Lanka. Good for getting an overall picture of the culture and geography.

Extremmely pleasant reading

I'm not much of a reader of travel novels, nor have I ever been to Sri Lanka, but now I am obsessed. Briggs writes with such vivid detail and personal insights that the reader feels as if they are on the journey with her. Every step of her journey is brought to life and she gives an unparalleled insight into this beautiful island and makes you fall in love with it from afar.Read this book if you've ever been to Sri Lanka, if you've got a love of travelling or if you want to go on an adventure from the comfort of your living room. Highly recommended!
