A Monster Like Me, by Wendy S. Swore

Review

"In Wendy S. Swore's tender A Monster Like Me, the imaginative grade schooler battles isolation and bullying to discover that growing stronger sometimes means realizing that there's more to life than meets the eye. Strikes a careful balance, depicting realistic cruelties in everyday encounters like schoolyard name-calling. Sophie's shame and unease are rendered with heartrending clarity. Other characters, including a man disfigured in combat, serve as thoughtful counterpoints. The book shines in its portrayal of finding self-acceptance. Pages from the monster book add occasional life tips and lead toward lessons in gratitude, and Sophie's flights of inspiration set her on a search for a cure. An intelligent and provocative story about a memorable girl who discovers her own unique talents, reminding those around her that everyone no matter how they look feels love and pain." --Foreword Reviews"For as long as she can remember, Sophie has identified herself as a monster. She either shrouds her face with her long hair or hides behind her Big Book of Monsters to keep others from seeing the hemangioma on her face. She knows that people will think if she s disfigured on the outside, she must be on the inside. Smart, but self-consciously quiet, Sophie thinks she can identify other people as various types of monsters, witches, or fae folk. Bullies may surround her, but Sophie must confront her own fears. Will she ever allow herself to be just a human girl? Swore integrates The Big Book of Monsters into the fabric of the book by beginning each chapter with the description of a different monster, creating a disruption in the first-person narrative but also adding insight into how Sophie views the world. Swore s character-driven debut, in the vein of R. J. Palacio's Wonder, allows readers to step inside Sophie s thoughts and to understand and empathize with her, leaving them to wonder how they would react if they were Sophie." --Booklist

This book!! I honestly can't say enough positive things about it. The characters were developed so lovingly and are so realistic. They made their way into my heart, and, with Wendy Swore's magical story spinning, I felt what they felt. I giggled like a child. I cried like a broken-hearted woman and I feared like only a parent can. There are multiple life lessons tucked into these pages that, together, build a truly enjoyable and memorable message of kindness and awareness. This book got promoted to the top of the list of books to read to my children... more than once. I want them to remember this one.

What if you had a tumor on your face? That’s what young Sophie has, a hemangioma (a benign tumor birthmark) on her face. People stare at her, so she tries to hide it behind her hair and her Big Book of Monsters. When children see her birthmark, they call her a monster. It’s easier to beat the bullies to the chase and believe you are a monster before they call you one. Better yet, it’s better to believe everyone is a monster or a mythological creature so that you feel like you are not alone, that this world you live in is filled with creatures that are either good or bad. This is how Sophie copes with her monster mark. But it doesn’t stop the bullies or reality from crashing in on her world. Along with her fairy friend, Autumn, they collect pieces to create a magical amulet that will cure her from being a monster, making her human again. What she finds in her journey is that a monster mark is not what makes you a monster, it’s what you do that makes you human. This book is rather magical. If we could only see the world the way that Sophie saw the world. It is so much easier to see the world filled with monsters, witches and fairies to explain the good and evil that happens in the world, than to see that humans can be monsters. What makes us monsters? Is it a disability or a birthmark? Or is it the circumstances with which we live that can force us to lash out and hurt others because we are hurting inside?A Monster Like Me not only explores what it means to be a child that looks different, but it also takes a look at bullying in a way that helps bullied children understand why bullies are bullies.

“The world is a dragon; my book a shield.”Sophie believes a witch cursed her when she was a baby and she now spends much of her time with her head down, reading and rereading ‘The Big Book of Monsters’. She uses it to help identify and protect herself against the monsters surrounding her that are cleverly disguised as humans and searching for clues to figure out what kind of monster she is so she can find a cure. She’s also hiding her face from the world because she’s ashamed of her ‘monster mark’, a hemangioma (blood tumour) that appeared when she was only a few months old.I really liked Sophie for the most part but she also made me really sad. My heart ached for her each time she called herself a monster and every time someone stared, pointed at her or bullied her. She’s so self conscious because of her ‘monster mark’ and spent so much time looking out for danger that she missed out on having a lot of fun. With Sophie always on the lookout for the mythological creatures from her beloved book she’s able to find the magical in people, but she can also find the monster in people whose behaviour doesn’t warrant the title.Initially I loved the excerpts from Sophie’s monster book between each chapter because of my love for mythology, although I did have trouble finding the connection between excerpts and their surrounding chapters at times. The excerpts did get a bit of a preachy vibe towards the end, focusing more on being a good person than monsters. The cover image is wonderful and drew me to the book in the first place. I particularly liked the monster marks added to the font on the title.Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the opportunity to read this book. Content warnings are included in my Goodreads review.

*I received a free ARC of this book, with thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*Love love love this book!A Monster Like Me features Sophie’s first-person narrative as she navigates a world in which she looks like a monster (in her opinion) and other people act like them whilst looking human. She sees witches, fairies, goblins and more everywhere she looks and constantly muddles fact with fantasy as she struggles to understand a world in which she is ostracised and bullied for her appearance and her mum seems fixated on ‘fixing’ her. This is a beautiful, poignant and very clever exploration of what it is to spend your childhood on the outside looking in, and how coping strategies can mutate into something more harmful than helpful given time and pressure. I cried actual tears more than once, not just at Sophie’s struggles, but those of her friends and family. The book isn’t just a tear-jerker though. It captures the highs and lows of childhood imagination: fairytale dens and daring quests to gather magical items, kind adults and best friends, all have equal importance with the health issues and bullies of the real world.I would recommend this to anyone 8+ who loves a good story that tackles serious issues in an entertaining way. You’d think monsters would have their own grocery store, but they don’t. They walk around with a cart the same as regular people and keep the monster part hidden inside where no one can see it. Mom’s grocery cart squeaks with every step like an elf getting squished, but Mom’s not a monster–not that I can tell anyway.– Wendy S. This was a great book that covered almost everything I was looking for. The edition I read (5TH edition) did not include anything about CRISPER, but the latter is now easily found on YouTube.

Book that was necessary for class. Wasn't the most interesting read, sometimes it got confusing, but hey that's genetics.

Although I'm hating this class right now because of the lack of teaching skills from my instructor this book is easy to understand and puts it all together nicely! First college book that deserved my money lol

The language in the book is the way too confusing!! The questions on the back of each chapter are not clear, it seems like one question can have so many different answers.

Pros:- page quality is good-- same as every hard-cover textbooks.- Large texts so it's very easy to read, especially if you have to cram 2-3 chapters over 1 night.- Pictures & diagrams are life-savers. They're probably the best thing about this book. You can easily understand concepts by looking at them for just a few seconds.- book is pretty thin- my professor literally follows the book, so if I miss a lecture or space out during class, I can just read the book and be perfectly fine for testsCons:- Sometimes it gets a bit wordy. I feel like they could've worded it better for cleaner, more precised explanations (of course, after I understood the concept)

The text was pretty good. There were times where the language was confusing but overall it was good. The only thing is that if your professor is making you buy the online homework system affiliated with this textbook, I recommend just purchasing the paper copy online. It's less than twenty dollars and you can put the chapters in your binder as you need to. And you can write all over it.I rented the textbook from Amazon. Delivery was fast and return was easy.

Great!!!

Was torture to read for class

As usual Oreilly is the front runner in super detailed computer programming information. This book, although small is packed full of useful code examples. A must for Java with Ajax enthusiasts.

With Ajax, you can build web applications that have a quick response but lack the overhead of keeping the user current with the latest software. This book introduces you to Ajax by illustrating how to create such responsive applications on the server side in a Java environment. The reader should be a Java programmer with web application experience and a knowledge of working with Java servlets, HTML, and JavaScript. Struts, XML, and JavaServer Faces are mentioned in the later chapters, and to understand those chapters you should understand those technologies too.The first chapter shows you how to install Apache Ant and the servlet container, Tomcat. Next the book shows you the complete HTML and JavaScript code for your first Ajax application, a simple web page that displays the decimal value of any character. This example is then broken apart and examined piece by piece. The third chapter focuses on the backend of what was written in the previous chapter, which is the Java servlet that provides the client with the information it needs. Thus, a servlet is created that converts the user keystroke to decimal and sends the resulting data back to the client. Chapter four is about XML and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) for Ajax. Besides illustrating how XML makes it easy to parse data coming from the server, this chapter also demonstrates how to use JSON, a native JavaScript data representation that can be more convenient than XML. The example in chapter four returns five pieces of data instead of just one. This highlights the need for XML to structure the data that is being sent from server to client.Next, the book deals with the ubiquitous Order-entry application using Google Suggest as a model. You learn to write web applications that tell users immediately when they have requested usernames that are already in use, that fill in a city and state automatically on the basis of a zip code, and that make it simpler to enter the names of entities that already exist in the database. Up to this point in the book, XMLHttpRequest has been used to send requests to the server and set up callback methods to intercept the responses coming back from the server. Next the book uses ready-made libraries and toolkits to build the request object and set up the callback function. Using a toolkit also eliminates the separate code that handles Internet Explorer and the other browsers. The toolkits examined are the Dojo Toolkit, Rico Toolkit, DWR Toolkit, Scriptaculous, and Prototype. In chapters five and six, code was developed that enabled the finding of city and state information based on a user-entered zip code. Next the book shows how to add this feature to a tag library, encapsulating the details of the Ajax code.Chapter eight investigates two approaches to adding Ajax features to Struts applications. One uses Struts-Layout, which implements some Ajax features. The second method uses the DWR library that was first introduced in chapter six. This chapter isn't a tutorial on or introduction to Struts, though. Next, the book turns to the subject of JavaServer Faces (JSF) and presents one way to add Ajax to a JSF application by using a custom JSF component. The Ajax request is shown being processed from the viewpoint of the JSF lifecycle. Instead of writing HTML or JSPs, or JSF pages combined with JavaScript, with Java servlets or JSF components to handle the server side of the application, the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) lets you write the whole application, from client to server, in Java. It generates all the JavaScript automatically, based on the Java code you write. You still need to write some HTML, but GWT provides skeleton HTML as a starting point. GWT also handles all cross-browser issues for you. It also eases the chore of debugging. This chapter provides a pretty good tutorial for the GWT.I thought this book did a good job of showing how Ajax technology can make Java web applications more responsive. Just remember that if you are not familiar with technologies such as JavaServer Faces, Struts, or XML, you will need some outside sources on these topics as no tutorial is included.

I was looking for a book on to explain the underpinnings of Ajax technology. What I purchased was little more than an advertisement for several Ajax development projects. Additionally, the author covers, in equally superficial detail, many side technologies which do not drive the subject matter forward; cascading style sheets (CSS) and Ant, for example. The code examples have many bugs and references code/methods that have yet to be presented in the book. Meanwhile, the text explaining the examples discusses the actual methods that should have been in the code examples. The author does not take the time to discuss good object-oriented programming techniques or why this would be important. All in all, this is a very disappointing offering.

Ajax on Java is exactly what you need when you want to try Ajax out, with Java, in a hurry. I have read through it completely and have tried more than half of the example projects and found it to be a great resource to get me started toward using Ajax right away in our shop. One of the things I like best about this book is that it emphasizes doing the work needed to learn the material. I am a fan of the 'see one, do one, teach one' school of learning and this book fits that methodology perfectly. There may be thicker, wordier and more comprehensive books on Ajax but I am willing to bet (figure of speech, please, no offers to wager are actually intended!) that none of them will do as good a job as Ajax on Java did for me.

'Ajax on Java' by Steven Olson is a nice intro book to learning how to use Ajax with your Java code. Nothing more than a quick overview (certainly not a reference) at just over 200 pages, this book will help Java programmers get their feet wet and start learning how to program the Ajax way with instant responsiveness in the Web 2.0 world. If you program with Java and want to begin to learn how to use Ajax to make your apps hit the "turbo" button, pick up this book and start your engines!!!**** RECOMMENDED

Sad to say, this book is little more than a code dump, and the code does not run without debugging. There are no explanations of technologies and concepts that surround Ajax, therefore, given the state of the code, there is not a lot of reason to work through the book. In fact, this is the first computer book that I returned to the seller, simply because I found so little reason to keep it on my bookshelf. The writing in the introductory chapter gives promise, but as the book progresses the code quickly becomes dense and the organization and writing becomes unacceptably thin. I expected more from O'Reilly. Before I gave up on this book, I was half way through it, and only one code set had ran correctly from build on. For example, the author's code has at least four variations of the basic application URL sprinkled among the Javascript and build files of the first four examples. Finding and correcting the URL was annoying but not difficult, but even after that, the examples did not run without further debugging.I finally threw up my hands and surrendered... defeated by the author's rush to publication.

This book is a good value for the money you spent. It takes you through the basics of Ajax and then touches on the different frameworks and implementations available. The section to integrate Ajax with Struts and JSF is also useful and conceptually sufficient to get started.

This book is great for Ajax newbies who are confused with all the frameworks available out there. Provides a quick overview of a lot of them with working examples. I would have prefered if it included more advanced scenarios.

I recently converted my business to an LLC, and this book has a ridiculous amount of practical useful information. I really appreciated as well that the language was accessible. Very easy to understand. I found this guide very helpful and I've referred to it several times.

I was required to purchase this book for my Business Law class. This book was amazing. It went into a lot of detail and gave excellent examples to give you a better understanding of starting/running your own small business. It also gave examples on which types of forms you would need in certain situations and their purpose. It is also a great reference tool.

I was a business consultant and also started 2 of my own companies and got this book to refresh my memory. If you don't know anything about starting your or a business, this book should be where you start.A definite recommendation from me.

It seems to have a lot of information, but every time I need to look something up, its not even mentioned. For example, nothing about trademark

School recommended but so helpful

Good info.

My daughter started consulting as an LLC and finds this book enormously useful as a first time business owner.

Great help for starting our business.

Review

"This book should be on every photographer's nightstand, and you should read three or four pages of it, and look at five or six pictures in the portfolio every single day for inspiration and as a way to help you stay grounded, focused, and motivated as a photographer. Beautiful job, Dan Winters. This is a book for the ages, and it is really the book of the year…." -Not Another Mac Podcast, review by John Nemerovski

I am at a loss for a quick way to describe Dan Winters' just-shipped book, Road to Seeing. That's because it defies nearly any category of photo book I have seen to date. It's nearly 700 pages long, and is far and away the deepest journey into the photographic process I have ever read. It includes technique, but in the context of the journey covered in this book technique is almost an afterthought. And appropriately so.Best way I can put it: Road to Seeing is not so much a book as it is a mentorship.THE "WHY" PRECEDES THE "HOW." THIS, I BELIEVE, SHOULD BE THE GOAL OF ALL ART. (pg. 439)Part of me wants to do the standard run-though of Road to Seeing, to give an idea of its breadth and depth. To talk about the huge number of images it contains—only about half of which were shot by Winters himself.About how it is a wonderfully detailed manual (a personal journal, even?) of one man's life path to becoming of on the greatest illustrative portraitists of his generation.About its significant nod to the history of photography and to so many influential photographers who have come before. About its deep journey into the internal process of photography and creativity and craft. About its deep journey into the internal process of photography and creativity and craft. But another part of me says to just keep it vague and to not ruin the reader's experience by mapping out the book before they begin it.So instead I'll just say this. The book starts in Winters' childhood and from there explores the decades of layers and experiences that made him into the person he is today. Like anyone's path, his has its moments of randomness. But there is also serendipity, conscious decisions and significant risks taken along the way.The narrative is, for the first portion of the book, mostly chronological. From there, Winters wanders down the occasional side path looking in-depth at assignments or other types of projects. But he always comes back to the core of who he is, and in that forces you to examine your own core beliefs as a photographer.Or to recognize that maybe you have not yet discovered your own core beliefs and that it is high time you got started doing so. The thing that leaps out at you throughout, is that this is not randomness at all. It is his continually, consciously chosen path as a photographer.Road to Seeing is not a book you blow through and exit with a new bag of techniques. It is a book you absorb over time. In fact, I wonder even what percentage of young photographers will possess the mental wherewithal to realize exactly what they are holding in their hands.I'd like to think this book would have significantly altered my path had I read it as a 20-year-old. But I have to wonder. I was having a lot of fun shooting for newspapers at that age, and probably would not have been ready to hear what it has to say. But boy, does it resonate at 48.It is very possible that people of different ages (and different points along their own paths) will read this as entirely different books. And will go back to it five years later and see it completely differently. So in that sense I think it is appropriate for a serious college student. Or a 48-year-old student, as the case may be.

I have a LARGE library of books. Photography is my profession, love, habit and joy. During my forty years in the business I had only heard a casual mention of the name Dan Winters. This book certainly gives life and form to Mr. Winters, but it exposes his fine work to a larger class of readers, students and others seeking a way to see. I had no expectations of this book. It sounded intriguing and I ordered it. You get what you pay for, even if by the pound. It is heavy (5lbs. and 696 pages. I can promise you will not regret the read and you will love the images. I have been so fascinated by the book, I would enjoy meeting Dan and having a discussion about his road down photo lane. Thanks for sharing your soul Dan Winters.

More than a book on photography, this was a philosophical look at a beautiful art and the history one person had. The journey was just a beauty of words and images. I have read so many books on photography, this one ranks right up there as one of the best. This one and Galen Rowell's Inner Game of Outdoor Photography, which is a very different book, but both rank right up there as the best.

The book is a very beautiful object, as are the photographs on the pages inside of it. As the other reviews have written, Dan Winters' photography is art of the highest accomplishment.Mr Winters prose is as beautiful as his photographs are. He tells of his life in plain words and simple sentences. The images those words evoke are consonant to his photographic images. The title of the book is exact; the story of the book is the path by which he came to his vision. It isn't any explanation of how he sees his surroundings. This isn't any 'how-to' lesson. The story he tells, to me, is a lesson of looking ahead, taking another step, and moving closer to what is beautiful.I recommend this book very highly. I also highly recommend Dan Winters' book "Last Launch", photographs of the launching of the last Space Shuttle mission. He is the same age as I am, and his story of his youthful interest in the Kennedy inspired Space Program took me back to memories of my youth. The pictures are the best that I have seen of the Shuttle's launching.

This is an interesting read that I've been waiting a long time to check out. Nothing technical at all in this book. Dan exhibits a reverence for photography, and his portrait subjects. He seems to always been in control of the scene and appears to exhibit a calmness. I was interested to learn about his background in model making and set building, all of which comes in handy as a photographer.

Fantastic book. I highly recommend this book for photographers but also for collectors because it's such a nice quality collection of words and images. Photographers will especially enjoy this book for it's insights into a brilliant creative mind. It also contains a lot of historical information on the origins of photography and a great historical summary of street photography, one of the most important canons of photography. The physical quality is outstanding, very nice strong binding and great print reproduction.

I tend to have a very procedural, rather than creative, thought process, but reading this book has been a creative inspiration unlike anything else I've ever experienced. Yes, there are more informative books out there. Yes, there are books that will help your photography a lot more. This isn't the mostly eloquently structured book in the world, but I don't think it's supposed to be. Rather this a book about one man's journey through the process of photography. I think it's absolutely stunning. Highly recommended.

Although I've admired so many of John Ford's films I found his personality and actions quite unlike what I expected. truth is that Mr. Ford was not a very nice man. But again - his films are a brilliant legacy.

Scott Eyman has written an outstanding book on John Ford! Fordwas the second generation son of an Irish bartender from Portland Maine who followed his brother Frank to Hollywood. In over 130 films from such silent classics as Iron Horse tohis four Oscars for best director: The Informer; How Green Was MyValley; the Grapes of Wrath and The Quiet Man Ford chroniclesthe life of ordinary people living in extraordinary circumstances. Ford made Westerns better than anyone as witness his classiccavalry trilogy: Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon; Rio Grande and the peerless The Searchers. John Ford was a bristling porcupine guy who could dish out insults, reduce strong actors to tears and cover his sensitive, melancholic, brooding intellectual Irish soul with a veneer oftoughness and macho maleness. Ford was a complex man isolated and in conflict with famly who made great films for over 50 years in the Hollywood jungle. He was an admiral who loved the military serving with distinction in World War II. You may not like Ford after reading this fine book but you will be in awe of one of Hollywood's giants. Eyman gives a sketch of each of Ford's top films and charts the choppy waters of his long marriage to wife Mary and the difficult relationship he had with his daugher and son. John Ford will always ride tall in the saddle of Film Historyas we travel with him to Monument Valley, meet such Ford starsas John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Maureen O'Hara and the other excellent actors in the Ford acting troupe. Anyone claiming to be knowledgable about film who does not know about John Ford (1894-1973 should read this fine biograhy.Readers may also wish to peruse Joseph McBride's lengthy biograpy of Ford "In Search of John Ford." Both books are welldone.

For whatever reason, I've read a couple hundred books or so about the history of Hollywood. One filmmaker mesmerized me more than any other, and that was John Ford. For more than 50 years I have returned, again and again, to what I consider his 15 or 20 best films and been moved by them, moved in ways that I could never fully explain to myself. I was helped by the late film critic Andrew Sarris, who beautifully captured Ford, but only in brief. But Scott Eyman has done the seemingly impossible job; he has, much more than everyone else who has tried to explain Ford, and his films, deeply, richly and fully illuminated this strange man who is America's greatest film director. It's long (588 pages in hardback), but fascinating on every page, since he reveals Ford to us by describing the man's personal and professional life as he lived it. Walter Hill has said of Ford "He is our Dickens." But he might perhaps better have called him our Yeats, not just because his Irish soul is in his films, but because he is our greatest cinematic poet, and just as Yeats was Ireland's greatest historian, so Ford is our best historian.

I have read a number of the available books about John Ford. While this book doesn't convey a lot of the warmth that Harry Carey's personal treatment does, it is perhaps the best attempt to sum up what made John Ford one of Hollywood's greatest directors. It is clear the author has made an intensive study of Ford's work, and even more clear that he admires it. This book largely doesn't try to judge Ford, just to explain him. For that, we owe Eyman a great degree of gratitude. Too many other authors have, confronted with the genius of Ford's direction, tried to discount it because of the cracks in his personal approach to life and actors, or possibly because of personal jealousy. You must judge Ford the director on his work, and his time, not on our opinions of what he could have done better in his personal life, or according to our "politically correct" views of what he should have done, and this book does an excellent job on judging Ford by the standards of his time, and his life. This is a masterful attempt at explaining Hollywood's master director.

Great stories of a person who directed lots of movies in the 40's and 50's, and those who acted in them. Movies were just better then!!!

There are dozens of hours of youtube lectures of Christof Paar lecturing in his class in Germany (in English) which I found extraordinarily helpful in really getting into the nitty gritty of Cryptography which I needed on product development. Picking up Cryptography in bits and pieces from reading articles and watching short videos really doesn't give you a proper overview if you are planning on designing a system using cryptography as there are so many choices and it'snot easy to understand places and situations that may be right for one or the other.Christof's classes are excellent, I bought the book to use as a reference while going through the online courses but you probably wouldn't need it.I do feel that people like Christof should be rewarded for making serious donations of a life long study and in their ability to crystallize the teachings and then put it up on something like youtube FREE. So be nice and give back.. buy the book, you will find it useful in it's own right.

If you've heard people mention things like ECC, HMACs, discrete logarithms and wanted to what they were talking about; or if you wanted to understand who RSA and AES really work along with many other things, then this is the book for you.I had been hunting for something more current than the 1996 Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms, and Source Code in C, Second Edition when I came across Understanding Cryptography. I could tell from the available samples and the table of contents, that it should meet my needs. It has not only met my needs, but has exceeded them in every respect. This book was absolutely perfect for me, so it would be of some use for you to know my background.I've long had an interest in cryptography but never any training. When I read Martin Gardener's famous 1977 article on RSA I thought it was the coolest thing ever, but I didn't fully grasp it and didn't pursue it at the time. In college I studied some math, but my degree is in linguistics, not in math or computing. I have read popularizations of cryptography, and had tried to make it though Applied Cryptography when it first came out in 1996, but I can't say that I really understood how the algorithms and the more intricate protocols worked. So that is roughly my background. One of the great things about Understanding Cryptography is that it taught me exactly the math that I needed. You need to be comfortable learning new math. (I also found that I had to brush up on basic linear algebra on my own to understand one component of the deals of AES).Working though this book on my own through self study took time. It is extremely well presented (with the possible exception of the final chapter, which could do with another round of copy-editing). The subject matter is not simple, so if you really wish to understand them you need to go through things very slowly, stopping frequently to check understanding, but everything you need is in the book without it being overly long. The excellent organization and presentation of the material means that I was able to get far, far more out of this book than anything else I have read on the topic. The problem sets at the end of each chapter progress from easy to more challenging. I still need to go back and take on some of the more challenging ones I skipped the first time through. Often I was too eager to get to the new chapter than to work through the problems. As a consequence I missed some of the extended material that was presented through those problems sets.Personally, my second favorite chapter is the chapter on AES which really steps through how it works and why each component does what it does. My favorite is the chapter on ECC. I had known wat ECC was used for, but before reading this, I had no idea of what it really was. Now I find it "the coolest thing ever". (OK, I may over use that phrase.) The authors' presentation of it is just right. They lead you though the process so that you can share in the delight of how ECC works.Although I have worked though this as complete self-study, I would have preferred to do this as part of a class or at least some study group. Sometimes because I could have more quickly gotten through things that I held me up a few times, but mostly because I would have liked to share the experience. My wife and daughter are not entirely happy with the fact that I've been trying to teach them bits of what I've been learning over the month. There are still bits that I don't fully understand. Some are questions not addressed in the book, but the further readings and bibliography are excellent. So I have the resources to investigate those. There are also bits that I don't fully understand because I haven't gone back and worked through the relevant exercises in the problem sets. What I would like to see in a second addition:(1) A bibliography for each chapter as well as the comprehensive one at the end(2) A reworking of the final chapter, which appears rushed and not as well presented as everything else(3) More on hash functions reflecting what is being learned now as part of the SHA3 process.I am sure that this makes an outstanding textbook for a college course in the matter, but I want to add that it is so clearly presented, organized with introductions to the necessary math that it works for self-study as well.

I was searching for information on AES encryption algorithms and came across this book online; yes, online. The critical information was published and readily available for the reader, made available by the author for free.I honor those who are willing to open their hands and to share their wealth of knowledge with others without demanding anything in return. You can learn a good amount of information from this book for free, which is why you should honor these authors and purchase this book!I do not regret purchasing this book. The information is presented in a very readable format, and is helpful for those looking for a great introduction to the subject of cryptography.

This textbook is hands down one of the best ones that I have encountered in any subject throughout an undergrad and most of a grad degree in math. The chapters are clear and concise, and usually begin with a high level conceptual overview before breaking down component algorithms and supporting math theory. It is easy to read and is fantastic about providing a combination of historical, functional, and mathematical context. It provides examples and explanations without being overly wordy, and is formatted to avoid large sections of block text. The end-of-chapter problems are a mixture of straight algorithmic/mathematical practice as well as ones that challenge you to think about the security and attack vectors for various ciphers (meaning a good blend of true practice and appropriately challenging thought exercises). I would highly recommend this text.

I bought this book for self study to learn the 'basics' of what is involved in modern cryptography, and it does this job admirably, covering all the algorithms and math you will need, up to and including elliptic curves. The only thing missing, and arguably not really appropriate for a first book, is a discussion of provable security (i.e. semantic security). This book is written in a clear and engaging style that made me look forward to reading it each day. The exercises are also quite interesting (the odd numbered ones have answers available online, if you are using this book for self study). I highly recommend this as a first book on cryptography.

I work in information security and have a math background. This book is great! It really walks the dog but has gotten as complicated as I have needed to design implementations in python. I've recommended it to several friends.

I am reading this book and watching the YouTube videos of the classroom lectures. The book is very well written and is a great resource to understand cryptography with the addition of some general security concepts. Combining the book with the lectures gives you all of the benefit of a college class without the pressures of testing, etc.
