I found out about this book, Kitchen Simplicity, by listening to Tiny House Lifestyle Podcast by Ethan Waldman.This book, Kitchen Simplicity, is about simplifying your kitchen for smaller living.The author finds living in smaller places liberating. She teaches that just because you may live in a smaller home whether it be a van, car, bus, apartment, or a tiny house you can still have a love for food. It might be a challenge if you are used to living in a much bigger place. Nonetheless, there is still some magic in the kitchen even if you are short on space.There is a purpose in the kitchen if one just thinks about it simply. One doesn’t really need a dishwasher and it will just take up space you can use for other things.The author came from a background where they made do, grew much of their own food, and they still made magnificent tasting food! This is where her love for food came from.When you live in a tiny you develop creativity.Balance in the number of things you own. In a tiny, she says that everything should have a place.In addition, after you get your dishes dirty then wash them soon afterward. There isn’t a great amount of leeway in the tiny kitchen, for anything to be just sitting around dirty, claiming that space.Carmen states that when you decide to go tiny make a keep pile and a go pile. Downsizing can be stressful according to the author. We all know that sentiment if one has ever kept that special memory of something, that has a tender spot in our heart. Choose your favorite one or two and bring them with you. Don’t forget why you are going tiny.If friends or family still like giving gifts then give them some gift ideas. Such as a gift card to a restaurant or gas station. Then you don’t have to hurt someone’s feelings by refusing their gift.Carmen goes on in depth in her book to challenge you what you put in your kitchen to make your food. Let it bring you joy whatever it is that is in the kitchen.She also has several more chapters to help you learn to navigate your tiny kitchen in ways maybe you haven’t thought of yet. If you live in a tiny house or van or an RV then you will get pleasure from hearing about simplicity from a chef’s point of view. Even if you don’t live where you have a minuscule amount of kitchen space, I dare say you can find some new ideas.The author teaches if it doesn’t bring you joy then don’t have it. “Having too much creates a burden but simplicity sets you free.â€
It is time to re-think how we live, and Carmen Shenk has started us in the right direction. Raised as a Mennonite, simplicity comes naturally to Carmen. However, it wasn’t until she found herself escaping an abusive marriage that Carmen realized the importance of peace of mind. Living large had done little for her self-esteem, self-reliance and quest for love—change came in the form of a converted van that she soon called home. Since that time the author has blossomed into an advocate for tiny house living and a minimalist lifestyle.Carmen’s first book, Kitchen Simplicity, shows how the previous chef and restaurateur, whips up her favorite recipes with basic tools in a small space. Carmen shows us how little room is required to cook fresh clean healthy food without compromise. Are there challenges? You bet. However, Carmen has created a road map to help us through. This map addresses what we need and what we can eliminate. It also encourages us to look at how we think about how we live. What are we compromising to have so much? What dreams have we put on indefinite hold? Are we living beyond our means? How much of our life has become throw-away and what can we fill the emptiness with besides more stuff? Deep questions often come with simple answers if we know where to look and the kitchen is the place to start.
I met Carmen and Xaver at Tiny House Festival in Pink Hill, NC. A beautiful couple. My personal interaction with them underscores the genuine lifestyle they have chosen for themselves. Carmen shares some of her life experiences her book the "Kitchen Simplicity". I enjoyed the book and the references she provided. Kitchen Simplicity is an easy read full of great tips, tried and true tiny house kitchen living. I will be incorporating many of her methods into my future tiny house living. I like the personal life touches/stories that lead to Carmen's quest for a purpose filled life. This is a book that I will keep in my tiny library for future reference.
I love how this book helped me see my own home through the author's lens of simplicity and how it jump-started new ideas for me about how to organize my kitchen better. Even now, a week after I finished the book, I am still evaluating how I set up my kitchen, what's necessary and loved, and what is just taking up space. I have a renewed energy for my de-cluttering efforts. I also loved Carmen's approach of keeping her home a haven, and actively keeping out the negative energy that abounds in the world. I read the first two paragraphs and felt like we were kindred spirits. Carmen Shenk addresses topics that can be applied to any lifestyle; not just the tiny house movement. She writes with honesty and humor, which made the book an enjoyable read. I have no intention of living in a tiny house, but I do sometimes feel I have too many "Things". I think Carmen's approach was a common sense one that can be applied to anyone looking to have fewer possessions and more experiences.
