With all that is written about JFK it was surprising to me how much I enjoyed revisiting his life and times through this very well researched and written biography. The author provides a balanced view of JFK demonstrating he was a flawed man in some respects but one who was driven to achievements by both his aggressive and manipulative father and his own inner desire to overcome his physical limitations.Professor Dallek spends much page space relating the endless physical ailments and treatments JFK endured for his entire life. While in a general sense I was aware of his back problems I didn't realize the extent of his illnesses before reading this. The most remarkable realization that this book delivered to me was the understanding of the number of issues and dilemmas that he faced as president in such a short compressed period of time- Berlin, Cuba, Southeast Asia, CIvil Rights, Recession, nuclear proliferation all demanding his attention concurrently. I think the book does a good job of giving each the attention and detail required to assess Kennedy's handling of the situations but what it left me with was an appreciation once again of how volatile both foreign and domestic issues were in the early 1960s even though I lived through them as a young kid. Interestingly the assassination is handled rather briefly in just a few pages ( I imagine because so much has already been written of it) and the author chose instead to move directly into an assessment of JFK's legacy. Overall this was a fascinating look at a leader who rose to the challenges that his time in office produced and raises interesting questions about how a potential second Kennedy term would have played out.Outstanding Biography that I recommend to anyone interested in the period.

Although this book spends a little time discussing John F. Kennedy's growing up and personal life, it isn't a complete picture of his life. If your desire to read a book about JFK is focused almost exclusively on his presidency, then this is a good book. I prefer reading books that take the president's life as a whole into consideration. Only the first 20% of the book discusses his upbringing and family and almost no consideration is given to his personal life other than his physical ailments. His wife is only mentioned half a dozen times and no mention is made of his stillborn son during his presidency. These relationships and events certainly would have had an impact on his ability to preside over the nation. I would have liked to have read more about these other aspects of his life and less detail about the issues of his presidency (as important as those are), for a more balanced look at his life. As such, the impression I am left with after reading this is it's an "Unfinished Book."

President Kennedy was the first President I actually remember been born in the mid 50s and he was thought very highly of in my family. His assassination was devastating news and I recall my mom crying. He was a man who expressed noble ideas and made things like our manned moon landing and the Peace Corps possible. This book describes that JFK as well as a flawed JFK. It describes very tough decisions and political calculations. A truly interesting read but not think it would have changed our positive opinion of JFK. In fact, in he served a second term there is good reason to think he would have accomplished many positive things. But please read this book and arrive at your own conclusions.

The author obviously likes JFK, but the book is objective. Having lived through JFK's presidency, I found the review very interesting and quite a contrast to Trump's presidency so far.

I gave up after 522 pages. This is one of the most tedious and boring biographies I have ever read. I regret the amount of time I wasted trying to slog through this book. The writing is extremely dry and wooden. I kept hoping for this to get better. It didn’t. Too many many good things to read to spend time torturing yourself. If you are determined to know what Dallek thinks about JFK, listen to a podcast I terview of Dallek on this book. They are easy to find and catches the essence of his argument without all of the pain of reading this.
