This is a cute little story about an Irish family that celebrates St. Patrick's Day. Written in the same style as A Visit From St. Nicholas / 'Twas The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore.Two children set 'leprechaun traps' the night before St. Patrick's Day. The night morning they found they've caught one and they ask him where to find his hidden gold, but he tricks them and wishes them better luck next year. A super simple story that will not bore young readers. May not be very exciting for older kids but it might give them some ideas for their own traps, which they might like to make with a younger sibling. I love how the siblings in this book treat each other. Usually at holidays you see kids fighting over who got the best toy or who has more candy, but these kids work together nicely!We also have The Night Before Easter by the same author, which is also cute but I don't really recommend it as it's all about getting treats, which is probably better for a classroom setting with multi-cultural, multi-religious backgrounds but not ideal for the use I had hoped. Anyway! This is a cute book with a fun story that (IMO) children age 3-7 could enjoy.

Loved this book! My three year old and I were learning about leprechauns and building our own trap for St. Patrick's Day. This was the perfect book to go along with it! Colorful illustrations, cute story, and great new ideas for traps, as well as a bit of folklore ("He's hiding somewhere. When we find him, remember, we must hold his stare. For if you look away, if you so much as blink, leprechauns vanish, quick as a wink.") The "trick" at the end of the story was great!!! Sneaky little leprechaun :)

My daughter (almost 5 now) and I love these books! They are not too long, not too short, and super fun! We have almost all of them, she loves to read them all the time especially the 'Night Before' whatever holiday or event the book is about. We started originally with the Night Before Preschool The Night Before Preschool August (2016) to help ease her into preschool a bit, we bought 10 other titles from this series since then and plan to expand the collection as time goes on.

My mother and I looked through the book before giving to twin boys,my nephews. They were 3-4 at the time. Great for St Patrick's day. Nice colorful pictures, easy to read turn pages and the story is great for them. I didn't get to see them in past 5 years, because of some evil people who are targeting me, so I hope someday I can again.

Let me start by saying we are Irish. We have on the average about 25-30 people at our house every St. Patrick's Day. The entire house is decorated, inside and out. We decorate a tree, every year, and the leprechauns leaves presents under it for the grand kids. We do garland, and a village, lots of balloons, pictures, lights, and even a hidden pot of gold (gold wrapped chocolate candies.) We always felt it was important to celebrate, our heritage, with our children, and friends, so this all started years ago, when my 4 kids were little. Now it has become even bigger and better, and being carried on with the next generation. I cook on the average about 25 pounds of corned beef and cabbage, with all the trimmings for the day. And of course the Green beer and green punch flows endlessly. This is a wonderful book it really does sound a lot like The night before Christmas, which is also why I wanted it. It does a great job, rhyming, it's way along, St Patty 's Day events. I love how they build a leprechaun trap, and try to catch him. It tells of wearing green, decorating, bagpipes, and visions of gold coins, dancing in their heads. This is a perfect addition to our holiday.

Can't begin to say how much fun this book has been for our 4-year-old. This book motivated him to build five different leprechaun traps (with "gold" lego bait) in hopes of catching one. And knowing that leprechauns will escape if you break eye contact has improved his staring contest skills to the point that I always lose. And it was a good excuse to learn the order of the colors of the rainbow since the ones in the book are definitely not Roy G. Biv.

Bought for a fun book to read for St. Patricks Day with the kids. I can't say the story is the best one I have ever read, but it is one we will read every year. I don't regret buying it.

If so, we will all be the better for it.The Cheapskate Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of Americans Living Happily Below Their Means is a charming hybrid of two terrific classics, The Millionaire Next Door and The Tightwad Gazette. Those books were all about resource conservation from a financial standpoint - why leave good money on the table? TheMND describes a value-oriented affluent population who eschews conspicuous consumption. TTG was more about people scrapping together a nest egg, even on a tiny salary. The secret of both is living beneath one's means. However, they were written before the age of environmental awareness. All their strategies translate quite well to a new eco-age. The Cheapskate took himself on a national book tour - by bike, CouchSurfing his way across the country.His book is a lot of fun. My main takeaway is that if you create good habits, these too are hard to break. One becomes a reflexively resource-conscious consumer [a description I prefer to "cheapskate"]. Case in point. Two friends and I were at the beach in search of 1% hydrocortisone cream for my friend, suffering from a bee sting. We grabbed the first brand we saw. But I couldn't resist going back to look at the shelf, where I found a generic tube for half the price. Then I saw a generic tube half the SIZE. It is generally more economical, both financially and ecologically, to buy a larger quantity. But! Only if you will finish it all. Having just thrown out boxes of unused, expired OTC meds from my old house, I knew the smaller generic tube was a good choice. Time expended: 1 minute. Amount saved: ~ $6.00. Since I earn less than $6.00 a minute, it was a good use of my time. However, you can't send a child to college or pay for health care -America's two huge and ever escalating price tags - on small salaries supplemented by self-provisioning and judicious cheapskating.If you're following these authors' advice, be sure to check these books out from your local library soon!

Schor does an outstanding job of arguing that both from economic and ecologic perspectives our society needs to and actually must consume less. I would have prefered a discussion of how to achieve "life cycle" pricing for all manufactured products (raw materials to become manufatured products to become demanufactured to finally become raw materials again). Or the use of energy and inorganic materials to produce organic compounds without plant photosynthesis. This would enable synthetic petrolium for transportation and manufacturing. How would such concepts play into Plentitude?Criticisms aside, Plentitude is a well documented, thoughtful and thought provoking, and is particularly significant for the era in which we are presently living. I have personally recommended her book.

I bought this for our March 2014 trip and found it to be very helpful. My favorite part was the one where they advise you against hitch hiking.

Not a good travel guide-very few colored pictures

It was not updated it had absolutely nothing of value in it. Still had Continental as one of the airlines flying there. I'm surprised this book got such great reviews, but I guess I should have read said reviews before purchasing as it would have told me what I needed to know or should have known...This IS a good book! Very interesting short stories, HOWEVER, "short" being the key word. Each story is only about 2 pages of very easy reading. I appreciated this to some extent, as I've had a hard time digging in to a book for fun lately (I'm an attorney). But, I guess I was just yearning for a bit more. I would have enjoyed this book more there were less stories, but more info presented on each story that was included To the author's credit, there is a list for suggested further reading following each section (approx. 3 titles to pursue with regard to each story presented).This book would probably be appropriate for a high schooler, but I wouldn't recommend for much younger audiences, as most of the stories have to do violence, death, and drugs!

I pretty much read this in one sitting and was dismayed to get to the last page and I immediately checked to see if there was another one. It told me incredible things I never knew, about important historical events and characters; to a history junkie with a taste for a good story this is the purest smack

Other reviewers point out the amazing depth and breadth of Havil's mathematical journey, and they're right. But another wonderful facet: Havel's command of English, and his continual use of subtle metaphor is delightful, humorous and, frankly, shocking! This is an awesomely right/left brain balanced talent whose intellect is as much fun to watch as the proofs and historical adventure. "We hope with sufficient conviction for hand-waving to be a positive signal" he quips, as an example of his continual tongue in cheek about ponderous scientific method and epistemology. He is genius at making sure we don't take "axioms" too seriously, and what better secret and oyster pearl grain irritant is there than the irrationals? This isn't just subtle-- Havel often points out limits in many senses of the word, from the essence of defining irrationals to quotes like "It is terrifying to think how much research is needed to determine the truth of even the most unimportant fact" (Stendhal) and "One can measure the importance of a scientific work by the number of earlier publications rendered superflous by it" (Hilbert). (Wonder how this would apply to the succession of the planet's Prophets??).In passing, Havel mentions the recent color reprint of Euclid's Elements as a "novelty" the reader might enjoy. That book:Six Books of Euclid is one of the most astonishing accomplishments in math, printing, education, graphics... and bankrupted the printer in the mid 1800's (originals now go for over $25,000). Pick it up-- it will also be a collector's item!Havel himself states that if you're not comfortable with real variable calculus and limits (as well as series), you'll get lost, however, with work, you can put the puzzle together with some missing pieces. For mathematicians, teachers or just math lovers, very good. It can be read several times, each with a deeperlevel of understanding (specially the demonstrations, some of which are quite elaborated).

I had to read this book twice. The first time I skimmed it and shyed away from the proofs. That was a mistake. If one takes one's time and tries to get a gist of what the proofs are trying to show, the reader will get a glimpse into the mysteries of irrational numbers. I would recommend the readers have some familiarity with college level mathematics when approaching this book. The reader will come away from this book with a better understanding of how mathematicians struggled with the irrationals over history and expanded understanding of this pandora's box opened by the legendary Hippias who was a pythagorean who shared the secret of their existence to the world and as the legend goes was thrown overboard a ship by his angry brethren.You will learn about Greek geometric proofs of incommeasurables. Next you will be introduced to surd arithmetic in India and Islamic civilization,then Medieval Europeans then pick up the thread. The proofs of pi and e irrationality are worth a closer look and Algebraic and Trancendentals are discussed along with proofs of e and pi as transcendental numbers. The later chapters cover the 19th century rigorists in Germany as the hammer out definitions of the irrationals and the real numbers. The last chapter covers some of the applications of the study of irrationals.One chapter I really like has a good discussion of the randomness with regard to irrationals. This is an excellent theological and ethical analysis of the "gay controversy" in the Church of England. O'Donovan provides fair treatment of both sides of the conversation while challenging both to deeper thinking within the Church's ethical and doctrinal traditions. This is not superficial reading. O'Donovan is a leading thinker in theological ethics. I wish the theological analysis in the American churches was this serious.

O'Donovan will be frustrating if you are looking for someone to give a final verdict on Christianity and Homosexuality. Instead he offers that tradition is neither the final arbitrator on all decisions nor something we can just dismiss. He reproves anyone who feels they have an irrevocable answer on this when The Anglican Communion as a whole has not achieved consensus. His optimism that such a consensus can be reached is the most winsome quality of the book.

This is one of the most thoughtful reflections on the crisis going on in the Anglican Communion in print. O'Donovan helps the reader think about the issues in terms of Christian witness and vocation and argues that the "liberal" "rights" paradigm is not the best framework for thinking through this issue. Be prepared to hear a theological reflection which does not conform to either the "right" or the "left" ideological agendas. It should also be noted that O'Donovan does not take sides on the issue either.

Did it actually end the way you planned it from the beginning? A: Very much so. While I didn't know every detail, of course, the arc of the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, to the eventual outcome remained constant throughout the writing process. Q: We understand you worked on the initial screenplay for a film to be based on The Hunger Games. What is the biggest difference between writing a novel and writing a screenplay? A: There were several significant differences. Time, for starters. When you're adapting a novel into a two-hour movie you can't take everything with you. Then there's the voyeuristic thrill—watching people being humiliated, or brought to tears, or suffering physically--which I find very disturbing. There's also the potential for desensitizing the audience, so that when they see real tragedy playing out on, say, the news, it doesn't have the impact it should. Q: If you were forced to compete in the Hunger Games, what do you think your special skill would be? A: Hiding. I'd be scaling those trees like Katniss and Rue. Since I was trained in sword-fighting, I guess my best hope would be to get hold of a rapier if there was one available. But the truth is I'd probably get about a four in Training. Grade 7 Up Following her subversive second victory in the Games, this one composed of winners from past years, Katniss has been adopted by rebel factions as their symbol for freedom and becomes the rallying point for the districts in a desperate bid to take down the Capitol and remove President Snow from power. But being the Mockingjay comes with a price as Katniss must come to terms with how much of her own humanity and sanity she can willingly sacrifice for the cause, her friends, and her family. Collins is absolutely ruthless in her depictions of war in all its cruelty, violence, and loss, leaving readers, in turn, repulsed, shocked, grieving and, finally, hopeful for the characters they've grown to empathize with and love. Mockingjay is a fitting end of the series that began with The Hunger Games (2008) and Catching Fire (2009) and will have the same lasting resonance as William Golding's Lord of the Flies and Stephen King's The Stand. However, the book is not a stand-alone; readers do need to be familiar with the first two titles in order to appreciate the events and characters in this one. Before reading The Hunger Games trilogy, I had more than a few people tell me the first two books were good, but the last one was lacking. I couldn't disagree more. The story is harsh, gruesome, and bleak. It had to be. It's a first person account of an individual who has survived two Hunger Games and plays a major role in a revolution. Of course it's going to be brutal. Had the story drawn to a close with Katniss standing majestically with trumpets blaring and flags waving, it would have been completely unrealistic.I also heard a few people express disappointment in the conclusion of the Katniss/Peeta storyline. I've read people's reviews taking issue with how Katniss and Peeta are represented at the end of Mockingjay, asking "Where's the passion?" Passion? Are they insane? First of all, the story is told in first person by a character who is admittedly not at all comfortable being demonstrative and doesn't respond well to those who are. There was never going to be a hearts/candy/flowers declaration happening here. Peeta has a borderline obssessive love for Katniss throughout most of the trilogy. The way I read the story, by the end of the first Hunger Games, she returns the feeling. Though hesitant to think why she does the things she does, or to state it aloud, she expresses it in so many different ways throughout the remainder of the trilogy, there really is no doubt. Despite the fact that she is suffering major PTSD, she agrees to take on the stress of being the symbol of revolution and take a front line role to bring him back. Regardless of the amount of trauma they both endure, they still eventually turn back to each other. Gale was a strong character, but he had not gone through what Katniss did in the arena and would never have been able to understand that part of her. The time she spends clinging to him and avoiding Peeta is essentially an attempt to return to the person she was before the games (which was never going to happen). Peeta was the walking, living, breathing reminder of the trauma endured. I thought it telling that Peeta returned to Region 12. Like Gale, he could have gone anywhere when it was all over, yet he went where Katniss was. Really, Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch needed each other to become human again (or as human as they were ever going to be). Katniss reminded me of uncles I had who, when they returned from war, sat in a darkened room, staring at a wall day after day for over a year before they could handle being amongst the living again.I'll admit part of me would have liked President Snow's demise to be more than it was. Considering the amount of suffering he caused, part of me is bloodthirsty enough to have wanted him to suffer a great deal more. There are also characters I would have liked to survive (Finnick, Cinna, and Prim to name a few), but their deaths helped to illustrate the randomness and unfairness of death in wartime.There are parts of this story we'll never get to see because it is told from Katniss' point of view. We see only what she sees and know only what she thinks is going on. I, for one, would be interested in knowing more about events of the story from Peeta and/or Haymitch's point of view. Peeta's fight back from his memory hijacking would be an intriguing read.Ultimately, I found this book engaging, infuriating, exhausting, and funny all at the same time. To have had Katniss serene and sweetly declaring life to be sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows would have been absurd. She is with a husband (partner?) whom she loves and is utterly devoted to. She has two children she loves, but is worried what they will think when they know the role their parents played in the past. She and Peeta are happy, but remain somewhat haunted which is perfectly realistic for what the characters have gone through.

You know a book is good when it crawls inside your head and snuggles there. When you are thinking through it as you read it, and thinking about it long after you’ve read the last word on the last page.I had little to no expectations when I first started reading the Hunger Games Trilogy. If a book is trending and seems interesting, I will add it to my “to read” list. This is how I first started reading Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. After finishing Mockingjay, I was blown away. All I could think was, how many of the YA readers will understand the nuances of Collins’ message?She hooked you in with the “will she or won’t she” scenario. “Will she or won’t she” pick Peeta or Gale? “Will she or won’t she” survive a game that does not allow for love to shine through? Those questions get you through the first book, and possibly half way through the second book, but those same questions are a moot point with Mockingjay.Mockingjay stripped you of your hopeless romantic naiveté. There is no room for romance when the world is collapsing around you. There is barely room to breathe. There are no good guys or bad guys, only survivors. Mockingjay asks difficult moral questions: can man ever hold seats of power without corruption? Can war ever actually solve a dispute? At what price is man willing to pay for absolute power?I won’t even go into Collins’ varied symbolisms. Part of the pleasure of reading is finding them yourselves and asking yourself what the author is telling you, the reader. It becomes a communication between the author and the reader. It makes the novel Mockingjay even more important because it is written for younger readers, our future, those that will decide the world events of tomorrow. Collins does all this without a lecture, without loosing her characters or her plot, she has crafted an incredibly well written story that I would gladly recommend to anyone who asks.After I finished reading Mockingjay I had the same feeling as I had when I finished reading The Lord of the Flies so many years ago. Yes, I am comparing Mockingjay to a classic. There is no way around it. Mockingjay, like Lord of the Flies, asks you deep moralistic questions through the point of view of young characters. This is simply another great novel that makes you go hmmm.My favorite quotes from Mockingjay:“Frankly, our ancestors don’t seem much to brag about. I mean, look at the state they left us in, with the wars and the broken planet. Clearly, they didn’t care about what would happen to the people who came after them.”“It’s a saying from thousands of years ago, written in a language called Latin about a place called Rome,” he explains. “Panem et Circuses translates into ‘Bread and Circuses’. The writer was saying in return for full bellies and entertainment, his people had given up their political responsibilities and therefore their power.”“Something is significantly wrong with a creature that sacrifices its children’s lives to settle its differences.”

My long ago 9th grader classical history students alerted me to this trilogy during a discussion on the Minotaur. I asked if anyone knew what a "tribute" was and every hand shot up. We had a sidebar on the Hunger Games. As soon as class was dismissed, I ordered my Kindle copy.I immediately understood Katniss: the mindset to survive unthinkable tragedy, to distrust as first reflex, to protect others, to wrap oneself in emotional distance - yep I got that. Refusal to be a game piece, to surrender myself, That she was in her teens and I in my 40's mattered not a whit. Still, many years later, Katniss and I amble through a reunion - a literary walkabout is still a fresh experience. This is unusual for me. (The films, though entertaining and generally well done, can't compete with the story in my head. Though I confess the idea of drinking fruit juices recommended by s Donald Sutherland voiceover can give me chills.)Peeta's deep love for Katniss and her misunderstanding of it in so many ways - especially feeling unworthy of it - I also understand. I am fortunate to have married my Peeta. He may not have Collins' character 's gift for the right words, I know he loves me always.The other marvelous folks who populate the books are an odd sort of family now. Reading their collective story never gets old. And they always remind me to be my fierce though flawed, self and never be a piece in anyone's games.

Great little book, can read it in an hour or two and you will not regret. It's a 1936 sales pitch to the European powers that it would be bad for Italy to conquer Ethiopia. Did you know that Ethiopia was the first Christian nation? That it was never conquered by a European power? That it is large, populous, optimistic, proud, industrious, and above all green?Written by a Jamaican who came of age in New York during the Harlem Renaissance, the book is passionate, personal, and a downright pleasure to read -- not the dry tome one fears when presented with the term "history book." Nonetheless, despite his personal investment in the thesis, Rogers does not get bogged down in being negative about white supremacy nor resort to conspiracy theories, as do many authors on such topics. Rather he sticks to enriching stories and real facts.Highly recommended.

I had many questions about about Haile Selassie when I picked up this book, I have none as I set it down. If you've ever wondered who the man was, what he did, and why he is revered by some cultures, this book will clear up much of the mystery for you.

I choose this rating for this book. I think J.A. Rogers did a profound job explain the history behind Ethiopia roots from the dark history until now. It also explains the effects of greed and enemy behind politics and religion to control the masses of people. Melanted people need to awake out of the sleep, that has kept us blinded for years.

A short, but informative history. Not everyone knows that Ethiopia was never conquered by any European country or that Ethiopia defeated the Italians and drove them out.

A 4 star rating due to facts and content flowed that have reader an understanding.I liked learning about the country of Ethiopia.I recommend book to other readers that have ever wondered why Ethiopia stood unconquered whereas other nations were.

Very interesting subject matter but sometimes a confusing presentation.I don't have anything else to say about this topic. Okay
