Review

"This book should be on every photographer's nightstand, and you should read three or four pages of it, and look at five or six pictures in the portfolio every single day for inspiration and as a way to help you stay grounded, focused, and motivated as a photographer. Beautiful job, Dan Winters. This is a book for the ages, and it is really the book of the year…." -Not Another Mac Podcast, review by John Nemerovski

I am at a loss for a quick way to describe Dan Winters' just-shipped book, Road to Seeing. That's because it defies nearly any category of photo book I have seen to date. It's nearly 700 pages long, and is far and away the deepest journey into the photographic process I have ever read. It includes technique, but in the context of the journey covered in this book technique is almost an afterthought. And appropriately so.Best way I can put it: Road to Seeing is not so much a book as it is a mentorship.THE "WHY" PRECEDES THE "HOW." THIS, I BELIEVE, SHOULD BE THE GOAL OF ALL ART. (pg. 439)Part of me wants to do the standard run-though of Road to Seeing, to give an idea of its breadth and depth. To talk about the huge number of images it contains—only about half of which were shot by Winters himself.About how it is a wonderfully detailed manual (a personal journal, even?) of one man's life path to becoming of on the greatest illustrative portraitists of his generation.About its significant nod to the history of photography and to so many influential photographers who have come before. About its deep journey into the internal process of photography and creativity and craft. About its deep journey into the internal process of photography and creativity and craft. But another part of me says to just keep it vague and to not ruin the reader's experience by mapping out the book before they begin it.So instead I'll just say this. The book starts in Winters' childhood and from there explores the decades of layers and experiences that made him into the person he is today. Like anyone's path, his has its moments of randomness. But there is also serendipity, conscious decisions and significant risks taken along the way.The narrative is, for the first portion of the book, mostly chronological. From there, Winters wanders down the occasional side path looking in-depth at assignments or other types of projects. But he always comes back to the core of who he is, and in that forces you to examine your own core beliefs as a photographer.Or to recognize that maybe you have not yet discovered your own core beliefs and that it is high time you got started doing so. The thing that leaps out at you throughout, is that this is not randomness at all. It is his continually, consciously chosen path as a photographer.Road to Seeing is not a book you blow through and exit with a new bag of techniques. It is a book you absorb over time. In fact, I wonder even what percentage of young photographers will possess the mental wherewithal to realize exactly what they are holding in their hands.I'd like to think this book would have significantly altered my path had I read it as a 20-year-old. But I have to wonder. I was having a lot of fun shooting for newspapers at that age, and probably would not have been ready to hear what it has to say. But boy, does it resonate at 48.It is very possible that people of different ages (and different points along their own paths) will read this as entirely different books. And will go back to it five years later and see it completely differently. So in that sense I think it is appropriate for a serious college student. Or a 48-year-old student, as the case may be.

I have a LARGE library of books. Photography is my profession, love, habit and joy. During my forty years in the business I had only heard a casual mention of the name Dan Winters. This book certainly gives life and form to Mr. Winters, but it exposes his fine work to a larger class of readers, students and others seeking a way to see. I had no expectations of this book. It sounded intriguing and I ordered it. You get what you pay for, even if by the pound. It is heavy (5lbs. and 696 pages. I can promise you will not regret the read and you will love the images. I have been so fascinated by the book, I would enjoy meeting Dan and having a discussion about his road down photo lane. Thanks for sharing your soul Dan Winters.

More than a book on photography, this was a philosophical look at a beautiful art and the history one person had. The journey was just a beauty of words and images. I have read so many books on photography, this one ranks right up there as one of the best. This one and Galen Rowell's Inner Game of Outdoor Photography, which is a very different book, but both rank right up there as the best.

The book is a very beautiful object, as are the photographs on the pages inside of it. As the other reviews have written, Dan Winters' photography is art of the highest accomplishment.Mr Winters prose is as beautiful as his photographs are. He tells of his life in plain words and simple sentences. The images those words evoke are consonant to his photographic images. The title of the book is exact; the story of the book is the path by which he came to his vision. It isn't any explanation of how he sees his surroundings. This isn't any 'how-to' lesson. The story he tells, to me, is a lesson of looking ahead, taking another step, and moving closer to what is beautiful.I recommend this book very highly. I also highly recommend Dan Winters' book "Last Launch", photographs of the launching of the last Space Shuttle mission. He is the same age as I am, and his story of his youthful interest in the Kennedy inspired Space Program took me back to memories of my youth. The pictures are the best that I have seen of the Shuttle's launching.

This is an interesting read that I've been waiting a long time to check out. Nothing technical at all in this book. Dan exhibits a reverence for photography, and his portrait subjects. He seems to always been in control of the scene and appears to exhibit a calmness. I was interested to learn about his background in model making and set building, all of which comes in handy as a photographer.

Fantastic book. I highly recommend this book for photographers but also for collectors because it's such a nice quality collection of words and images. Photographers will especially enjoy this book for it's insights into a brilliant creative mind. It also contains a lot of historical information on the origins of photography and a great historical summary of street photography, one of the most important canons of photography. The physical quality is outstanding, very nice strong binding and great print reproduction.

I tend to have a very procedural, rather than creative, thought process, but reading this book has been a creative inspiration unlike anything else I've ever experienced. Yes, there are more informative books out there. Yes, there are books that will help your photography a lot more. This isn't the mostly eloquently structured book in the world, but I don't think it's supposed to be. Rather this a book about one man's journey through the process of photography. I think it's absolutely stunning. Highly recommended.

Although I've admired so many of John Ford's films I found his personality and actions quite unlike what I expected. truth is that Mr. Ford was not a very nice man. But again - his films are a brilliant legacy.

Scott Eyman has written an outstanding book on John Ford! Fordwas the second generation son of an Irish bartender from Portland Maine who followed his brother Frank to Hollywood. In over 130 films from such silent classics as Iron Horse tohis four Oscars for best director: The Informer; How Green Was MyValley; the Grapes of Wrath and The Quiet Man Ford chroniclesthe life of ordinary people living in extraordinary circumstances. Ford made Westerns better than anyone as witness his classiccavalry trilogy: Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon; Rio Grande and the peerless The Searchers. John Ford was a bristling porcupine guy who could dish out insults, reduce strong actors to tears and cover his sensitive, melancholic, brooding intellectual Irish soul with a veneer oftoughness and macho maleness. Ford was a complex man isolated and in conflict with famly who made great films for over 50 years in the Hollywood jungle. He was an admiral who loved the military serving with distinction in World War II. You may not like Ford after reading this fine book but you will be in awe of one of Hollywood's giants. Eyman gives a sketch of each of Ford's top films and charts the choppy waters of his long marriage to wife Mary and the difficult relationship he had with his daugher and son. John Ford will always ride tall in the saddle of Film Historyas we travel with him to Monument Valley, meet such Ford starsas John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Maureen O'Hara and the other excellent actors in the Ford acting troupe. Anyone claiming to be knowledgable about film who does not know about John Ford (1894-1973 should read this fine biograhy.Readers may also wish to peruse Joseph McBride's lengthy biograpy of Ford "In Search of John Ford." Both books are welldone.

For whatever reason, I've read a couple hundred books or so about the history of Hollywood. One filmmaker mesmerized me more than any other, and that was John Ford. For more than 50 years I have returned, again and again, to what I consider his 15 or 20 best films and been moved by them, moved in ways that I could never fully explain to myself. I was helped by the late film critic Andrew Sarris, who beautifully captured Ford, but only in brief. But Scott Eyman has done the seemingly impossible job; he has, much more than everyone else who has tried to explain Ford, and his films, deeply, richly and fully illuminated this strange man who is America's greatest film director. It's long (588 pages in hardback), but fascinating on every page, since he reveals Ford to us by describing the man's personal and professional life as he lived it. Walter Hill has said of Ford "He is our Dickens." But he might perhaps better have called him our Yeats, not just because his Irish soul is in his films, but because he is our greatest cinematic poet, and just as Yeats was Ireland's greatest historian, so Ford is our best historian.

I have read a number of the available books about John Ford. While this book doesn't convey a lot of the warmth that Harry Carey's personal treatment does, it is perhaps the best attempt to sum up what made John Ford one of Hollywood's greatest directors. It is clear the author has made an intensive study of Ford's work, and even more clear that he admires it. This book largely doesn't try to judge Ford, just to explain him. For that, we owe Eyman a great degree of gratitude. Too many other authors have, confronted with the genius of Ford's direction, tried to discount it because of the cracks in his personal approach to life and actors, or possibly because of personal jealousy. You must judge Ford the director on his work, and his time, not on our opinions of what he could have done better in his personal life, or according to our "politically correct" views of what he should have done, and this book does an excellent job on judging Ford by the standards of his time, and his life. This is a masterful attempt at explaining Hollywood's master director.

Great stories of a person who directed lots of movies in the 40's and 50's, and those who acted in them. Movies were just better then!!!

There are dozens of hours of youtube lectures of Christof Paar lecturing in his class in Germany (in English) which I found extraordinarily helpful in really getting into the nitty gritty of Cryptography which I needed on product development. Picking up Cryptography in bits and pieces from reading articles and watching short videos really doesn't give you a proper overview if you are planning on designing a system using cryptography as there are so many choices and it'snot easy to understand places and situations that may be right for one or the other.Christof's classes are excellent, I bought the book to use as a reference while going through the online courses but you probably wouldn't need it.I do feel that people like Christof should be rewarded for making serious donations of a life long study and in their ability to crystallize the teachings and then put it up on something like youtube FREE. So be nice and give back.. buy the book, you will find it useful in it's own right.

If you've heard people mention things like ECC, HMACs, discrete logarithms and wanted to what they were talking about; or if you wanted to understand who RSA and AES really work along with many other things, then this is the book for you.I had been hunting for something more current than the 1996 Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms, and Source Code in C, Second Edition when I came across Understanding Cryptography. I could tell from the available samples and the table of contents, that it should meet my needs. It has not only met my needs, but has exceeded them in every respect. This book was absolutely perfect for me, so it would be of some use for you to know my background.I've long had an interest in cryptography but never any training. When I read Martin Gardener's famous 1977 article on RSA I thought it was the coolest thing ever, but I didn't fully grasp it and didn't pursue it at the time. In college I studied some math, but my degree is in linguistics, not in math or computing. I have read popularizations of cryptography, and had tried to make it though Applied Cryptography when it first came out in 1996, but I can't say that I really understood how the algorithms and the more intricate protocols worked. So that is roughly my background. One of the great things about Understanding Cryptography is that it taught me exactly the math that I needed. You need to be comfortable learning new math. (I also found that I had to brush up on basic linear algebra on my own to understand one component of the deals of AES).Working though this book on my own through self study took time. It is extremely well presented (with the possible exception of the final chapter, which could do with another round of copy-editing). The subject matter is not simple, so if you really wish to understand them you need to go through things very slowly, stopping frequently to check understanding, but everything you need is in the book without it being overly long. The excellent organization and presentation of the material means that I was able to get far, far more out of this book than anything else I have read on the topic. The problem sets at the end of each chapter progress from easy to more challenging. I still need to go back and take on some of the more challenging ones I skipped the first time through. Often I was too eager to get to the new chapter than to work through the problems. As a consequence I missed some of the extended material that was presented through those problems sets.Personally, my second favorite chapter is the chapter on AES which really steps through how it works and why each component does what it does. My favorite is the chapter on ECC. I had known wat ECC was used for, but before reading this, I had no idea of what it really was. Now I find it "the coolest thing ever". (OK, I may over use that phrase.) The authors' presentation of it is just right. They lead you though the process so that you can share in the delight of how ECC works.Although I have worked though this as complete self-study, I would have preferred to do this as part of a class or at least some study group. Sometimes because I could have more quickly gotten through things that I held me up a few times, but mostly because I would have liked to share the experience. My wife and daughter are not entirely happy with the fact that I've been trying to teach them bits of what I've been learning over the month. There are still bits that I don't fully understand. Some are questions not addressed in the book, but the further readings and bibliography are excellent. So I have the resources to investigate those. There are also bits that I don't fully understand because I haven't gone back and worked through the relevant exercises in the problem sets. What I would like to see in a second addition:(1) A bibliography for each chapter as well as the comprehensive one at the end(2) A reworking of the final chapter, which appears rushed and not as well presented as everything else(3) More on hash functions reflecting what is being learned now as part of the SHA3 process.I am sure that this makes an outstanding textbook for a college course in the matter, but I want to add that it is so clearly presented, organized with introductions to the necessary math that it works for self-study as well.

I was searching for information on AES encryption algorithms and came across this book online; yes, online. The critical information was published and readily available for the reader, made available by the author for free.I honor those who are willing to open their hands and to share their wealth of knowledge with others without demanding anything in return. You can learn a good amount of information from this book for free, which is why you should honor these authors and purchase this book!I do not regret purchasing this book. The information is presented in a very readable format, and is helpful for those looking for a great introduction to the subject of cryptography.

This textbook is hands down one of the best ones that I have encountered in any subject throughout an undergrad and most of a grad degree in math. The chapters are clear and concise, and usually begin with a high level conceptual overview before breaking down component algorithms and supporting math theory. It is easy to read and is fantastic about providing a combination of historical, functional, and mathematical context. It provides examples and explanations without being overly wordy, and is formatted to avoid large sections of block text. The end-of-chapter problems are a mixture of straight algorithmic/mathematical practice as well as ones that challenge you to think about the security and attack vectors for various ciphers (meaning a good blend of true practice and appropriately challenging thought exercises). I would highly recommend this text.

I bought this book for self study to learn the 'basics' of what is involved in modern cryptography, and it does this job admirably, covering all the algorithms and math you will need, up to and including elliptic curves. The only thing missing, and arguably not really appropriate for a first book, is a discussion of provable security (i.e. semantic security). This book is written in a clear and engaging style that made me look forward to reading it each day. The exercises are also quite interesting (the odd numbered ones have answers available online, if you are using this book for self study). I highly recommend this as a first book on cryptography.

I work in information security and have a math background. This book is great! It really walks the dog but has gotten as complicated as I have needed to design implementations in python. I've recommended it to several friends.

I am reading this book and watching the YouTube videos of the classroom lectures. The book is very well written and is a great resource to understand cryptography with the addition of some general security concepts. Combining the book with the lectures gives you all of the benefit of a college class without the pressures of testing, etc.

Great!

Excellent overview with great photography. One of the better books on San Francisco's Victorians.

I attended college in the Bay Area in the early `60s and have been nostalgically in love with San Francisco and Marin ever since. I spent many, many hours hiking around the city with a couple of friends, climbing the hills, exploring narrow passages between buildings, and generally gawking at the 19th century architecture. I also knew a girl whose grandmother (or aunt, or something) lived in one of the "Painted Ladies" on Alamo Square, the strip now known as "Postcard Row," so I actually got to see the inside of one of the gorgeous homes detailed and depicted in this book. If you're not from there, you likely lump together all of San Francisco's historic domestic architecture as "Victorian" -- but you would be wrong. There's Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Stick Style, Shingle Style, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival, plus various hybrids among and later additions to all of those. Duchscherer is a longtime resident of the city and a highly regarded architectural historian and he leads the reader through the art and business behind these homes, while Keister's lush photography of busy (and occasionally overdone) Victorian interiors will have you drooling on the page. One of my personal favorites is the Westerfeld House in the Western Addition, built in 1889, which includes a fifth floor (!) tower room with an amazing view. Another is Falkirk (originally the Robert Dollar Mansion), built in San Rafael in 1888, a much more rambling Tudor extravaganza filled with a king's ransom in paneling and wainscotting; it was saved from demolition and entirely renovated (thank God) after I left the area, and I shall have to go and visit it the next time I get out there. What a book!
