This is one of the most important books to be written, if one desires to gain at least a rudmentary understanding of the Eastern Orthodox Christian perspective of the sacramental life of the believing Body of Christ. While deep enough to satisfy a theology students needs it is not overly professorial. Fr. Alexander moves masterfully through the concepts he desires the reader to gain yet remains understandable to an average lay person. It was a life transforming book for me and continues to be a staple well source of quotations through many years.

I just finished reading this book, and I am very sad that it is finished. I have never read an Orthodox book that was so inspirational and motivating. I couldn't put it down. I have already purchased an additional copy to give as a gift. I can't recommend this book enough.

I am a Protestant/Evangelical Christian, but I have found this book to be deeply enriching and to have contributed a great deal to transforming my understanding of many things. I appreciate both the authors insight, and his gracious tone towards Christians of other persuasions. This book is extremely edifying.

Alexander Schmemann's book is imbued with great passions for a true understanding of the sacraments - as means of grace and pointers to the transformed (and transforming) Christian life in the light of Christ's self-offering to the world. Schmemann poignantly exposes the secular subterfuge of a sacred-profane, religious-secular dichotomy that is inimical to the nerve centre of the Christian view of life as one that belongs wholly to God. What the sacraments do is neither to offer a kind of solace from the 'real world' nor a self-help scheme that dishes out remedies for life's problems. Rather, they are vivid and concrete expressions of the whole life that has now been redeemed by Christ and given back to us for communion. Whereas, the fall has alienated us from God and life and renders food, nature, work, family and life outside the dominion of God, Christ by virtue of his life, death and resurrection has begun to restore all things in God till he be all in all.Expositing the sacrament of Time and the various ordinances/mysteries (Eucharist, Baptism, Chrismation, Confession, Matrimony, Ordination, Unction) in the Orthodox tradition, Schmemann graces us with a passionate guide on how these are not to be co-opted by the world as the innocuous religious rites of hatch, match and despatch but the very windows through which we see the world in the process of being recapitulated by God. Hence, they are intimately connected with the mission and calling of the church to be the witnesses of Christ, who has offered himself as the sacrifice for the life of the world. For example, the Eucharist is the restoration of food as not just something for the stomach but as a means of communion with God. It satisfies our real hunger for God. Sunday is not just a day-off to do religious things, quite independent of the workaday week but the first day of the new creation! It invites us to enter into the Time (kairos) of God's new kingdom inaugurated on the Resurrection morning. While the secularist bemoans that 'there's nothing new under the sun'(Eccl 1), the Sunday liturgy points to the day when 'God will make all things new' (Rev 21)!Though written from an Orthodox perspective, it will find ready resonance from Christians across the board, especially those from a liturgical background and are attuned to how the sacraments work and what they are meant to be - as the intersections of heaven and earth as well as the physical signs of a larger objective spiritual reality.However, a caveat for those looking for a simpler introduction to Orthodox sacramental theology, this may not be the book for you. While articulate and clear a writer Schmemann certainly is, he does not make for straightforward reading, as it assumes a certain level of familarity with liturgical (even Orthodox) language and he writes with a quasi-poetic style. I would recommend instead the introductory books by Timothy Ware and Daniel Clendenin.

A classic work of the 20th century. Would recommend to Christians of all 'stripes', but certainly, of course, for Orthodox Christians.

This book is so deep and far-reaching in terms of illustrating a Christian worldview which is distinctively Orthodox that I don't know where to begin. It is as fundamental a shift as atomic theory was in physics. For the Life of the World challenges some classic dichotomies between "now" and "later", earth and heaven, secular and sacred. It's all the same *stuff*, we don't have to wait until later to experience the Kingdom - it's present NOW, in the sacraments. We don't have to view sacraments in opposition to the world, they are the completion of it, the satiation of a hunger for GOOD things.This book is comforting, challenging, and stimulating... and has refined my perspective on life, the world, worship, and the sacraments. A blessing to read that I plan to gift to close friends.

The late Orthodox Priest, educator, and writer, Alexander Schmemann has written a profound text dealing with the sacarments of the Church. Secondly, it is written well enough for academics to read and pondure insightful scholarship on doctrines such as the Eucharist and its revelance when looking at the creation, man's present condition, and the Kingdom of God. Further, it gives a perspective not often read about in Western Protestant circles and brings historical tecahings into a mystical, yet, understandable (though not completely comprehendable) way. This may appeal to Western Christians who want mystery, but are afraid of leaviing there mind at the door.This book is a must read. Edifying for all, whether Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox.

Philip Reeve’s “Not-So-Impossible Tales” are delightful adventures in imagination and absurdity. His most recent book, “Pugs of the Frozen North”, is slightly less comical and does address some serious topics. This story, like Reeve’s others, also place emphasis on self-reliance and the importance of friends and family. To lighten the tone of the story, it incorporates an imaginary character that will play a critical role in resolving Shen’s - the main character – dilemma and some humorous secondary “real” characters.When the “Lucky Star” becomes trapped in a frozen ocean, Captain Jeggings orders the crew to abandon ship. Ordered to save the cargo consisting of sixty-six pug dogs, Shen ultimately becomes responsible for their welfare. Abandoned by the Captain, Shen and the pugs traverse the frozen sea and eventually reach a village. There he meets Sika, a girl who tells him they are experiencing a magical “once-in-a-lifetime” winter. He learns of a race to the North Pole where the Snowfather lives. He will grant a wish to the winner; Sika wants to win so she can wish for her beloved grandfather to live and see another “once-in-a-lifetime” winter. Shen volunteers himself and the use of the sixty-six pugs so Sika may enter the race. Their adventures and the lessons they, along with the other race entrants, learn make this story entertaining while still teaching some valuable lessons.In “Pugs of the Frozen North”, Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre have given readers a book filled with humor, exciting situations, and very relatable characters. The cartoon-like, but not cartoonish, illustrations add to the one’s overall reading experience. Through use of the cartoon-style and a limited three-color format of the illustrations – green, black, and white – the fantasy aspect of the story becomes even stronger.The two have done an excellent job presenting situations and concerns many children experience. While fantasy and imaginative fictional characters fill “Pugs of the Frozen North”, the actual topics addressed are familiar and relevant. Fear of abandonment and disaster, and the need for family and friends are important to the target age group. Lessons involving cooperation and teamwork are presented without becoming didactic.“Pugs of the Frozen North” is written so well that adults can enjoy the story and not find it cloying or juvenile. The language is not “dumbed down”, but neither is it so complex as to discourage young readers. The story and its plentiful pictures are engaging enough to interest preschoolers to whom parents read bedtime stories. This is another winner for Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre.

I love Phillip Reeve. My dad and I read Science Fiction together when I was growing up but somehow we missed him. Maybe at that time (long ago and far away) he was not published in the USA? All of the books that I have read so far are fantastic. This one might be for kids but it shows his wonderful sense of humor and is a wonderful adventure for adults as well as kids. Just like Harry Potter is. I urge all of you to read not only this story but all his works. Some: like the ones about the Traction Cities and the Railhead series are more serious but others are seriously tongue in cheek humor. I have just discovered Mr. Reeve but am very glad I did. Marvelous man. I don't know if he is still alive but I hope so. He needs to write more stories. They are rich in character development and in the descriptions of the places, machines and other devices in the story. You can get a complete picture of the world in which you find yourself with each story. Thank you Mr. Reeve for giving us such marvelous stories.

I love it when a great author and a great illustrator come together! I bought this book on a whim because I thought my 9 year old would love a book about a bunch of pugs. It was easily one of the best books we ever read together and we've read A LOT of books. The illustrations are gorgeous... the writing is so incredibly creative. We read this one FAST even though it is about 211 pages. If your kids like adventure stories, ships, Krakens, Yetis, adorable pugs in sweaters... they will love this book.

Fun book to read before bed to my 6-year old. The characters are quirky and the story is easy for a young child to understand and enjoy.

What an enjoyable tale which is humorous, serious, and which kept me interested throughout the whole story. A great book to read with one's children, good illustrations, and, if read one chapter at a time, would keep a child interested in what is to come next. A great buy!

My 8 year old son, who typically hates to read, loves this book. The fact that he has been reading it for the last few days and has not lost interest is a huge endorsement for this book. Last night I actually had to stop him from reading.....that is a first!

I had to read this for a graduate class, and compared to my other textbooks this was a lot more readable. While I don't always agree with the author and could spot personal bias occasionally, more often than not I would write a note only for my question to be answered in the next two paragraphs. A good introduction and foundation for different therapeutic practices.

This book has some lovely surprises. I'm not a psychoanalyst, but I am a psychotherapist and I am getting a TON out of this book. And learning some things about history I didn't know. My whole view of Freud has changed, though I'm not converting to psychoanalysis by any means. I think there is something in this book for everyone, psychoanalysts, cognitive behavioral therapist and therapists from any other orientation.The author has such a wonderful way of explaining things in an accessible, interesting and thought-provoking way. He even shares personal info which really augments some of the points he makes.

I recommend this book to any new therapist or if you are interested in working with a therapist. it gives you a clear idea of the process psychotherapy has taken in its relationship between therapist and patients since psychology started. If you read it as a client, it will give you great insight to how you can improve your relationship with your therapist and get the most out of your sessions. In a way I felt as if the author reconciles the different views and takes out the most of each view. As a therapist I feel much more comfortable with the transference factor during my sessions and know how to use it in my favor and the clients favor. It also talks about the importance of being authentic during therapy and developing empathy. Very enriching book.

Excellent book for anyone interested in the mysteries of transference. Kahn explains it all with learning, circumspection, and empathy. This is altogether a more successful book than his "Basic Freud" because it's narrower in scope and ambition, and more deeply personal, with interesting clinical notes. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent read for students and early professionals, or for those looking to incorporate experiential and analytic processes in their therapeutic work. Just enough history to give context and plenty of material for thought and reflection outside the pages. Multiple recommendations and it’s been well received!

Kahn does a beautiful job of discussing the clinical implications of the humanistic theories. He doesn't provide a full explanation of each theory, but rather highlights the working parts, and the relational pieces. As others have said, his writing is extremely readable. This was a great resource for quick references while writing my thesis.

About the Author

Angie Epting Morris graduated from the University of Georgia in 1968 with a BS degree in geography and majored in cartography. This led to employment as a professional cartographer for the Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., in 1969. After marrying in 1972, she made her home in Evans, Georgia, outside of Augusta, and raised two sons. Angie taught high school English and geography for three years before opening a retail travel agency in Augusta. She also eventually opened a state accredited travel school to train travel industry personnel, which she operated simultaneously with the agency. These experiences added to her qualification as a teacher. She has become recognized as an expert on how to settle an estate peacefully and fairly.

The basic premise of the Settlement Game is: Divide an estate with an eye to keeping family relationships intact. The "game" is to have an appraiser value items, then have the direct family (inheritors) decide what they would like.Write everything down. Based on the value provided by the appraiser, the family members then get the value difference from the estate ( except for the one who took the most). Any items which someone feels belongs to them, can be written down and if no one else wants the item, this can be taken out of the estate. There is a 1-2 page explanation of difference personality types and how they can behave when the division is being done. The author also talks about paying petty cash and settling the bills before anything gets paid out of the estate ( again, seems pretty basic).The author spends far too much time "deifying" her father's idea. Which in premise is so simple that most people should be able to do this without this book. She also goes into excessive detail in the back of the book about unrelated topics ( segregation) that relate to her father.I would not recommend this book unless: you were really stuck about having any ideas at all about dividing an estate, you wanted a very simple guide and you did not have internet access. I think a quick look online would give you better guidance.This book would have been much better as an article. I liked the title even though I didn't like the book.

The Settlement Game: How to Settle an Estate Peacefully and Fairly has been like a life line to a drowning victim. Anyone can settle an estate, but to do so peacefully and fairly, is another matter. After reading the introduction, Ipurchased copies for myself and my siblings. Our home is like returning to another era with beautiful antique furniture, dishes, and many of our old toys. This book outlines a system for distributing these items fairly and peacefully. I particularly liked the spiritual side that the author weaved into the beginning of the book. Iwould recommend this book to anyone who is faced with settling an estate andwants to make sure the process is done fairly and that family relationships remainunharmed.

I am in the middle of trying to settle a modest estate with lots of valuable stuff, house, cars and seven siblings from two marriages. The author does a good job of approaching the subject but doesn't follow through on some items in depth such has how to apply personality types. I found her idea's were very helpful in guiding my plans. You can tell there is considerable reverence for her parents. This would be a great book to give to beneficiaries prior to the division of items to help communicate the process. Not enough depth for executors.

I ordered this book along with Who Gets Grandma's Yellow Pie Plate? and Sell, Keep, or Toss?: How to Downsize a Home, Settle an Estate, and Appraise Personal Property. The other two books were far superior in working through the dynamics of settling an estate. They addressed several options that will help my family settle our parents' estate fairly plus dispose of unwanted items quickly and at the best price. The first book helps work through the feelings of heirs to reduce conflict and suggests several ways to distribute personal property. The second book discusses various strategies for organizing and disposing of all property including the unwanted stuff. "The Settlement Game" was repetitive, had only one option for distributing property to heirs, and seemed to be written mostly as a tribute to the author's father. It was pretty much a waste of my money.....

I was appointed executor of my father's estate after he died. It was an incredible challenge. This book was helpful in so many ways. I used it a great deal to help me through a very difficult time.

Very helpful if you know nothing about this subject and plan to settle an estate. Lawyers are not always needed and are expensive.

Common sense preparations for those who need to deal with stressful times in settling estates--mine and other family members. Also prompts those who have not made their own arrangements, to do so now.

The photos in this book are amazing! I purchased this for my 5th grade son and the pictures are very complementary to other tree guides, as the photos are larger, showing more detail of bark, twigs, flowers and fruits at different phases, and also does a fair amount of comparisons which seems to make learning easier. Some of the trees included are Red Oak, White Oak, Red Maple, American Sycamore, American Beech, Sweetgum, Tulip Poplar, Black Walnut, Black Cherry, Gingko, American Elm, Flowering Dogwood, Black Locust and several more.

This is such a beautiful book! The photographs are amazing and I learned so much about trees from this book. I bought the book to use for teaching my grandsons to identify trees and their beauty, and to be able to identify the uniqueness of each tree. I highly recommend this book as a learning tool and as a beautiful book to display.

The close-up beauty in these photos makes this book practically a religious experience, Each photo is expertly backlit. What care was taken with each shot! Fascinating descriptions & info about each tree makes them more than just a coffee table book.

This is a beautiful small book packed with amazing photographs. I previously had ordered "Seeing Trees" by the same author and was looking for more of her books. I found it repetitive. Wonderful and beautiful book if you have not already purchased "Seeing Trees".

A simple pleasure. It is like an art book, with loads of information in just a few descriptions, facts and essential bits of information for each illustration. We love it, and take it on our hikes. We leave the tree identification book at home to refer to later!

The last several volumes have been week and convoluted. The series has been stale, because really, how many zombies can you kill and how many friends of yours can you see die (Kirkman would argue that the number for both is very high).This is the best volume in several years. Carl is now old enough to be interesting and he takes center stage in this edition. He has lots of experience and has become a bit jaded (and some might say a psycho....but one must remember the times he lives in). He's also solidly in adolescence, and with it comes the hormones, the righteousness, the idealism and the impulsiveness. All of those traits simmer into a tasty stew, as this book feels like a prelude to a wonderful arc.The art is as always - its been the most consistent aspect of the series. Mr. Adlard draws ignorant rednecks very well - there are a few characters in this volume that reek of real life and stirred strong feelings in this reader. Nicely done, Charlie.

I got the kindle version and it was hard to read the larger panels on my small phone screen. It was perfectly fine on a larger tablet.If you are a fan of the show and haven't read this, I will warn you that there are substantial differences. It is as if a drunk person explained the plot of the comic books to the screenwriter in a loud bar, and them the screenwriter wrote the show from memory a month later. This is to say that the 'highlights' from the comics made it to the show, but it is still a different story.People are on here trying to review this with deep literary analysis techniques, as if this were Shakespear or Proust or something. This is a comic about zombies. There are many like it, but this is the best one.If you like the show, you will like the comics. I promise. They complement each other, but are different enough to warrant spending time on both.

I bought this after watching the first 7 seasons of the TV show (and being severely disappointed with it from about season 4 onward), and it’s GREAT. I’m so grateful that the TV show inspired me to check out the comic, because the comic is better in many ways—but also, it’s different enough from the TV show that it’s engaging even from the pure plot and character development perspective, since people and events diverge so frequently from what I expect from watching the series.I’ve ordered (but not yet received) the next two volumes of the compendia [shifts glasses up nose], based on how good this volume is. Already, there are so many things that are different from the series, that I’m on the edge of my seat just wondering how things can possibly turn out here.HUGE SPOILERS for those who don’t care about surprises but want to get a sense of how different the comic is from the series: So there’s no Daryl, Merle, or Beth; Sophia, Lori, and Dale live but Carol dies; Carol is a needy sex freak; Rick loses his right hand early on; Michonne shacks up with Tyreese, Andrea shacks up with Dale; they never use the term “walkers” but DO discuss terminology periodically; Glenn isn’t a virgin at the beginning.

I've purchased all volumes up to 22 and the TV show has just about caught up to wear I am in the novels. These books are friggen awesome. I don't read much and my buddy lent me VOL 1 after he knew I liked the show. Well, I burned through the first one and then just went on a tear buying 4 volumes at a time...the price is pretty good for what you get out of these. $9-$15 is the range I've paid per novel, I'm not sure why they aren't the same but anyways, I keep buying them none the less. The story was written before the TV Show and the show follows the story but there is some differences. The written story is more violent and graphic then the tv show but the tv show does a decent job of sticking with main ideas. I've noticed that certain plot things that happen in the book also happen in the show but there is a unique twist like a different character it happens to or something like that. Which makes reading these volumes great cuz I have some idea of where the story is going (after having watched all tv episodes) but there are still surprises. If you like the TV show and haven't read these, give it a try and you will get a whole new experience of the Walking Dead story. I'm putting this same review under every volume I've purchased (1-22) so people can see it. go buy these!

I can't wait til the hubby is done with these so I can actually read them. We are fanatic TWD watchers and I finally got a chance to check these off on his Christmas list!!! He isn't a very big reader , but oh my goodness he read through these so fast!! and the entire time I had to tell him to stop telling me parts cause I wanted to read them, he said that they are um a little more "informative" than the show, so I would say NSFK's, which im really happy that he read them first and we know not to hand them over, we even feel uncomfortable giving them to our 15yo. I got him books 1&2 and plan on working on getting him a set of 2 twice a year. I would suggest getting them after you've watched the show only because if you read them first you might be a little disappointed that some things don't happen in the show that happen in the book. But if reading after the watching the show it gives a little more depth to most of the scenes. overall im happy with my purchase and plan on getting more

I get excited every year they put another one of the Omnibuses out. The artwork is phenomenal, and the inclusion of additional covers, sketches, and other drawings at the end is a welcomed finish. It is a big heavy book, so definitely designed as a collector's item. Highly recommended.Update: anyone know if #7 is coming out? These have been perfectly timed in the past to come out around the holidays and this year, nothin.Update: I contacted a distributor and they said while they don't have an official release date for Omnibus 7, they estimated sometime in July/August 2017

In his final installment of the Canaan Trilogy (Sarah; Zipporah), Halter ambitiously tackles portions of the complicated biblical book of Ezra, which centers on the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple and calls Israel to ethnic and religious purity. In the Persian town of Susa, the beautiful Lilah dreams of marrying her Persian lover and childhood sweetheart, Antinoes. However, her beloved brother Ezra, who has immersed himself in studying the laws of God, refuses to approve of their union since Antinoes is not a Jew. As the story unfolds, with scenes full of rich detail, Lilah becomes the unlikely instrument of gaining royal approval for the Jewish people to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the holy city. However, once there, Ezra orders all non-Jewish wives and children driven away in what is surely one of the most heart-wrenching episodes directly from scripture. A horrified Lilah repudiates her brother and leaves with them. As the cast-off women wander unprotected outside the city, rape, murder and mayhem ensue. (It's confusing that Lilah narrates one violent scene, but readers are unsure how she survives it.) As in Sarah and Zipporah, there is plenty of highly charged sexuality and some imaginative storytelling. Halter, who has successfully brought to life Sarah (2004) and Zipporah (2005), ends his sweeping Canaan trilogy with the story of Lilah, the sister of the prophet Ezra, who led his people back to Jerusalem from the Babylonian exile. After securing an audience with the king of Babylonia, which paves the way for the return to Jerusalem, Lilah makes the arduous journey alongside her brother, even though it means leaving her longtime love, Antinoes (the novel takes the form of a missive from Lilah to him). In the course of rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem, Ezra becomes so extreme in his beliefs that he bans non-Jewish wives and children to preserve the purity of his people. Disgusted at his decision, Lilah leaves with the exiled women, facing a bloody, terrifying future. This tale is considerably darker than Halter's previous biblical stories, which may limit its popularity. But it is a fine novel nonetheless, and Halter brilliantly succeeds in showing how extremism twists and perverts the underlying, unifying messages of all religions. Purchased this book based on the genre, but haven't regretted it a bit. Lilah is a great story with a great twist, especially for those who remember fondly the stories from the bible, but love the embellishment this author provides. The story is rich, the character development is suberb, and the landscape is so vividly described that you can almost feel the ground beneath your feet. This book is part of a trilogy, and I couldn't wait to finish each novel. I will recommend this novel to any one looking for a great story. Also, please look up "The Red Tent" for further reading along the lines of "Lilah."As far as the seller is concerned, I am glad to note that the book arrived in good condition, exactly as described, and on time, too! I would recommend them to other Amazon.com shoppers.

The heroine lived in a very dark time in Jewish history and the book paints Ezra as a very weak character. I thought it was interesting how the author portrayed the years in Jerusalem by having Lilah write a VERY long letter to her husband. The fact that writing then was with a stylus and very difficult makes it seem a bit far-fethched, but it enabled the author the cover history only from her knowledge and feelings.

It's ok !! I like it and read it a couple times every year but beloved Leah and Rebecca's redemption is so much better!!!

I liked Lilah's story. I'm not totally familiar with Ezra's story and his roll in rebuilding Jerusalem but this story is based on Ezra's journey back to Jerusalem to rebuild it. Lilah is his sister and I don't know if the Bible mentions her or even if she has a sister but it is a nice story. I like these kind of books. Historical Biblical Fiction. Give it a try.

I loved Lilah, just as I did the rest of the Canaan Trilogy. Sarah was my favorite, but be fair reviewers. Lilah was a great book. I have never written a review before, but I felt I needed to after reading what had been written about this one. I recommended this trilogy to a neighbor last week before reading all the negative things written here, and I stand by my recommendations. Another fantastic book in the "Biblical Fiction" category is "The Red Tent" (not written by the same author). It is my absolute favorite.

My cousin's reading group at her synagogue read this book, she recommended it, and I read it on my Kindle. The writing was ok, but I enjoyed the story and found some of its twists and turns most unexpected. Talk about the differences your choices can make. I am thinking about reading the other books in the trilogy because of my pleasant surprise from LILAH.

Very wonderul storytelling. Don't read this trying to match it to the Bible. Just enjoy the story and the telling of the story. Our Book Club enjoyed it very much

Another can't-put-it-down book. A page-turner. A very decerning eye for detail. Written from much mediation of Scripture.The only negative point is some missing detail from the French to English translation. Not as fluenty translated as the first 2 books of the trilogy. But saying that it is well-translated and VERY WELL WRITTEN.EXCELLENT STORY LINE!
