The book describes 13 or 14 women from the previous century, many of whom I had never heard of but enjoyed learning about. The beginning of the book explains why and how they screened the women for style and why certain women didn't make it onto the list (for example, actresses and singers such as Madonna didn't make it). The book is entertaining and informative. There are lots of interesting snippets, stories and tidbits that show how these women perceived life and lived their lives. It also analyzes the overall traits and individual traits that contributed to the women's sense of style.I was particularly fascinated by a few women. For example, Elsie de Wolfe, who basically turned the masses into fans of of interior design, was a pretty savvy businesswoman. So many of the home-related things we take for granted are her ideas. She was also gay (or bi - I can't guess exactly), lived with her girlfriend in the early 1900s and no one cared. She even managed to sell books during the Depression Era!Each chapter covers one woman. There's a section in the middle that covers 4 of them in one shot, if I recall correctly. I liked the overall structure. It allowed me to "meet" each woman and understand her. There are some photos for most of the women, possibly all.The only issue I had with the book was that it went from fascinating in the beginning to "eh whatever" towards the end. It held my attention probably through the 50-60% mark. After that, I was skimming more than I'd have liked. Despite that, I'm really glad I bought the book. It has inspired me and I've learned a few interesting things. It arrived yesterday. I bought it used, but it looked new. I read it in one evening.

The book condition is good. It’s suitable for a person who has a little sense in luxury life. I ordered this book because I’ve read the book named “Chinese rich girlfriend” and there was a list of books suggested by a character in that book to understand the luxury and high social class lessons (so I ordered all the books in that list including this one^^). It’s funny to know the real persons in high class in the past and also learn that it’s not really happy to live as a high fashion (or as a luxury fashion). Also knowing that most of persons in this book may have a good taste in fashion and “show-off” but their own lives all ended up in lonely, even bankruptcy, and some of them maybe not gold diggers but got the fortune just like a gold digger.

An unbiased look into the lives of beautiful women of the past that have left their mark on style and taste. I read and relish each word and photo.

Nice coffee table book for ladies cave

A book about fashionable socialites from the 40's, 50's, and early 60's.

Just one of the finest books of this genre. Arrived on time in beautiful condition. Fabulous!

I love this type of book. So funny.

Coco Chanel, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Diana Vreeland...these names recall the very essence of style. But, author Annette Tapert also celebrates the style of less well known women such as Rita Lydig, Millicent Rogers, and Mona Bismarck. Each chapter celebrates a different lady with wonderful photographs and detailed text of their lives and what made them the "women who defined the art of living well". Also recommended is Tapert's follow-up book "The Power of Glamour" which looks at the women of film, as opposed to the women of society. Both are great books about great women!
