Review

Montfort and Bogost's analysis is both technically detailed and historically contextualized, both informative and methodologically instructive. They write with a rigor and grace that future contributors to the series may be at pains to match.―Seth Perlow, ConvergenceRead it, it will do you good.―José P. Zagal, Game StudiesRacing the Beam doesn't spare the technical details, but is always accessible and compelling. Review

Montfort & Bogost raise the bar on anyone wishing to talk meaningfully about computer culture. Not only must we interpret these machines, we must first know how they work―and yes, sometimes this means knowing assembly code. From chip to controller, the authors lead us with ease through the Atari '2600' Video Computer System, one of the most emblematic devices in recent mass culture.―Alexander Galloway, Associate Professor of Culture and Communication, New York University, and author of Protocol: How Control Exists After Decentralization

#153,585 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I grew up with the Atari 2600, and one of it's younger siblings, an Atari 1200XL 8-bit home computer. I learned to program on the 1200XL, and eventually learned a lot about its graphical and sound capabilities. Based on that knowledge, I thought had a basic idea of what the 2600 was capable of... this book proved me wrong. After reading this book -- a book I plan to read cover-to-cover again, to refresh my memory -- I gained incredible respect for what 2600 programmers were (and still are) capable of eeking out of the machine. Coming from the relative luxurious comfort of the 8-bit computer, with a real framebuffer, character/tile graphics, etc., it's amazing that games like Pitfall! exist at all, let alone are fast, fun, and highly playable! If you're interested in retrocomputing or retrogaming, computer & video game history, or just enjoy learning about how technology works, this book is a must.

This book is not quite what I expected, but I enjoyed it just the same. I'd been expecting a thorough description of the VCS hardware, hopefully down to the (tiny) memory map, and at least a few code examples showing how the screen is generated, sprite multiplexing, etc. There is much more information at this level online, so you can learn about it; just don't expect much more than a cursory examination from this book. With that, the book has a few aims. One is to show how the restrictions imposed by the VCS hardware led to extraordinary leaps of creativity to produce playable and, in some instances, graphically impressive games. The authors do a nice job here of balancing the presentation of the dry technical aspects with sheer reverence for the programmers and designers.Another aim is more long-reaching: showing how some VCS games were the genesis (or an important part) of game genres that still exist today. This might be more of a stretch. There was a lot of arcade video game activity at the same time that the VCS ruled the living room, and many of the VCS titles were ports, i.e. they contributed little to moving the field forward. The book is part of a series called 'Platform Studies'. I'm not a media type, so I don't really know what this means. There's a fair amount of lip service paid to this concept in the book, but it seems a little contrived, as if the editor insisted that 'Platform Studies' be mentioned a certain number of times. Is the VCS an object lesson in platform studies? I don't know. What I do know is that it is probably the simplest programmable gaming system one could imagine. It's a brilliant design that offloaded all the difficult jobs onto the programmers to keep the hardware cost as low as possible. As such it deserves to be recognized for the milestone that it was, and this book does that, and in an enjoyable way.

I still own my original Atari 2600 and never bothered to learn about the secrets of its inner workings (the exception being joystick repair), despite it launching a lifelong interest in software, graphics, and electronics. I picked up this book on impulse after the finely tuned A.I. software of amazon recommendations discovered the algorithm to target 'human nostalgia'. When it arrived it I could not put it down... definitely a great read for anyone interested in the history of gaming regardless of your technical level. The book goes beyond tech as it touches on the market, the companies and personalities involved, the social and consumer norms of the times. Of particular interest (to myself) were the hardware design choices made that confound and make you cringe by today's standards. 'Racing the Beam' gives you the insight to understand these choices by providing the financial limits, competitive landscape, design goals, and technological context present at Atari's release. It is still hard to believe that developing back then was more than just heavy hardware and software constraints (128 *bytes of RAM* and this review is well over 1500 bytes)... The developers were often a one-man team juggling programming, art direction, UX/UI, screenwriting, sound design, and project management while devising logic tricks for precious source compression. No physics APIs or game platform builder or asset store to save the day, oops, I meant deadline. This is real insight on the Pioneering spirit. There is a whole chapter dedicated to Adventure. Very cool! Would be a good primer for those eagerly waiting to read Warren Robinett's Annotated Adventure. Yars Revenge (my favorite) and Pitfall is in there too. This was my first taste of a platform studies book and I look forward to picking up I Am Error: The Nintendo Family Computer / Entertainment System Platform (Platform Studies) despite never owning an NES.

With today’s ever demanding and competitive world, it pays to have knowledge in investments like in the stockmarket. There are lots of potential gains when you invest but also the potential loss is also high. It Investment is a skill and takes years to master it but it doesn’t mean that gives assures you 100% success rate. You are bound to commit bad investment but with the right knowledge, you’ll minimize these losses. This book gives you just about that but it’s more focused on GOLD.Gold is obviously one of the most traded items in the stockemarket. This book provides you the basic knowledge and terminologies used in trading so that you won’t get left out in the middle when you start trading. It also gives you an idea (drawbacks and benefits) with regards to other types of stocks, options, etc. Read and learn before you jump into any transactions…start by reading this book.

A big thank you to the writer since this book was very well written and I got a good knowledge about stocks after reading this. This plainly outlines all the nooks and crannies of the stock market.Though a few chapters that came out as lacking or were not detailed enough for my knowledge were the ones on ETF, Bonds and foreign currency. Yes the types, how it works, advantages and disadvantages were given, but I still think it lacks some more thorough specifics. The advantages as well as the disadvantages are written so I have no misunderstanding and will not have any surprises of what I will face when I involve myself in this business. Stock prediction methods will become quite useful I believe.

This is the kind of book I have been waiting for that can be a good gift to my one of close relatives of mine. It explains different kind of options in investments. It explains everything very well. I'll recommend this book to my aunt who used to be an entrepreneur because she might be interested in considering different options. It consists of just few pages so it is not tough and lazy to read, for those who are not fond of reading. I have never had a mindset of being an investor but this can awaken my appetite in having a passive income. I also notice the cover that really explains its content. This book can change one's life or even make one's life richer if he is going to read more book like this. In overall, it is good. This is a highly-recommended book for businessman aspirants.

I wasn't too sure what to expect when I first bought the book (as friend recommended it). Firstly, this is not a system, it will not provide you with a system to trade with (I suggest a system in an ebook is likely not worth it anyhow). This book is a (for me at least) a complete guide to all that you need to know and consider before you invest or trade. It lays out all of your options (e.g. options, stocks etc) and all of the variables that you need to consider when planning trades or investing (e.g. news annoucements, times of days to trade etc).I would really recommend reading this book for beginners and for experienced traders to see angles they have not considered before.

This book is a great introduction to different types of investments. It is said that we must never rely on a single source of income. I always wanted to find my second source of income but I never knew what I would do. This book delivers what it promises. It takes every aspect of investment ideas like gold or silver or forex trading and tries to explain it in a very to-the-point and concise manner. The topics are covered is simple language so that it is easier to understand. The fundamentals and analysis were very nicely covered. At the end of this book, we will have the idea to expand our business and continue our research in some new markets. This is a highly recommended book for everyone.

This book has touched a vast area to increase your wealth with minimum risk. In the beginning, you find some discussion on some of the basic questions on the stock market and its tools. Many tricks has been included in the book about the stocks, options, and precious metals for better trade and transaction. Different countries make use of different currencies and there is no such universal money that is accepted in the world. So you should know the matter clearly to run your firm and business worldwide. To know any term, here has been discussed about meaning, how it works, Types and Advantages. So this type of presentation will really make your sense fast to do the work.

There are many productive avenues to invest your money. Among those, stock market investments is one of the most lucrative investments in the world. This book contained in the different elements and several components of stock market must be helpful to increase money's worth as well as secure financial future. Moreover, there are few tricks of the trade described here so that I can apply it to have a good start in the business and avoid pitfalls. I found this book very informative and supportive also, as it enriched me with the different aspects of the market that helps me more to decide about investing my money through a profitable and secured way.

I have read this book to give me a better understanding of the stock market, it is just in time for the holidays to kick in so a lot of companies will be needing more funds to obtain the right amount of supplies for different niches. Like any other book about the stock market, this has given a thorough example of what to expect and how to feel when everything fails and crumbles down, you have to be very open minded and once you invest, you have to be an emotionless robot so you wouldn't be disappointed about it. it also taught me to have a proper mindset on the earning potential of having a professional broker to make sure you have a better chance for your money's worth.

#102,871 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The author gives a concise history of philosophy from Descartes to Voltaire, by a circuitous route that includes Leibniz, Newton, Locke, Hume etc. He provides a good description of the periods these people lived in and the challenges they faced when trying to publish their work(s). The book is enjoyable to read and one wished that there was more to absorb from such an important period of history.

Gottlieb’s new account of the enlightenment is a pleasant and easy read. The thought of major philosophers is balanced with their biographies and an overall sense of the enlightenment program (challenging the hegemony of the church and aristocracy by the advocacy of science and reason) comes through in a lucid fashion. The title is, however, somewhat misleading. The book principally concerns philosophy rather than science and the empirical method. The latter are discussed, of course, but the chapters cover Descartes, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke, Bayle (surprisingly), Leibniz and Hume, where one might have expected extended discussions (there are brief discussions) on Bacon, Newton and, e.g., the Dutch physicians/Newtonians who helped spread news of English science to their continental patients.Late in the book (p. 196), Gottlieb comments that “there are few avowed Leibnizians, Lockeans or Hobbists today.” He refers to a 2009 poll of philosophers “who were asked to pick the dead thinker with whom they most identified.” The top four: Hume, Aristotle, Kant, Wittgenstein. Fair enough, but why does Gottlieb’s survey of enlightenment philosophers end with Hume rather than with the equally influential (in all honesty, probably far more influential) Kant? Kant not only completes and extends some of the most important philosophic threads of the eighteenth century; he is a crucial bridge to the Romanticism which followed. We all have our favorites, of course, but I am surprised that Berkeley is not given far more attention, not just as a bridge to Hume, but as an enormous influence on such literary figures as Blake. If one looks at the book baldly it is essentially an account of seven philosophers. The final chapter “What Has the Enlightenment Ever Done for Us?” (a clever play on Cleese’s question concerning the Romans in Monty Python’s Life of Brian) attempts to pull all of the threads together in 13 tidy pages. Unfortunately, the enlightenment is far more complex than that and a book which at first appears to be a grand synthesis turns out to be a fairly basic primer. The “Suggestions for Further Reading” (p. 281) contain a spare eleven titles and Peter Gay’s magisterial study of the enlightenment is not among them. Gottlieb’s enlightenment is also essentially French, a kind of dual between Voltaire and Rousseau. Hume is not seen as part of the Scottish enlightenment or, indeed, as part of a larger British enlightenment. Johnson, e.g., is mentioned briefly and is contrasted with Hume, though Johnson explicitly said once that all of Hume’s ideas had passed through his own mind. Gottlieb catches the more moderate aspects of the British enlightenment (Hume scoring religion but in a reverent manner) and he appreciates the fact that the enlightenment begins in England—and Voltaire’s recognition and praise in that regard—but he fails to see how important these distinctions are. Hume makes a crucial and obvious (but somehow easily forgotten) distinction between faith and reason. Faith is, by its very definition, closed to rational attack. Thinkers who have that faith, Johnson, e.g., are still capable of embracing the great mass of the enlightenment program. At bottom, the enlightenment is an extremely complex set of ideas and debates whose ultimate contrast now is not with the church and aristocracy but with the romanticism(s) that replaced it. On another level it highlights the conflicts between science and philosophy which were of such deep concern to the Anglo-American mid 20th century. Gottlieb gives us some wonderful hints of this on p. 77: “Both [Locke and Hobbes] maintained that some traditional puzzles are merely confusions masquerading as problems, which appear to be substantive only because people do not pay enough attention to how words get their meanings. This idea was far from new in the history of philosophy—it is found in Plato’s time and in every subsequent period—but Hobbes made much more of it than most, and Locke followed his example.”Yes, indeed. And that is why Wittgenstein makes the list of the top four philosophers with whom contemporary philosophers associate themselves. The most important questions are, as he argued, those of which we cannot speak. Hence the importance of the British enlightenment’s figures of faith (Newton, Boyle, Johnson, et al.) for our understanding of the total picture. Gottlieb gives us glimpses of these issues but does not pursue them to the degree that one might wish.Bottom line: a lucid and workmanlike exposition of the thought of a handful of enlightenment philosophers that is very light (but occasionally quite suggestive) on the overall patterns that constitute this era in Western thought.

Unless you're studying for a advanced degree in philosophy, I'm afraid reading the stuff is much like panning for gold: a great deal of effort for a very occasional nugget of insight. But this book - wow! You really get inside the head of these revered icons via Gottlieb's narrative. He provides all the goodies: historical context, character description, incidental correspondence between philosophers, high praise or, sometimes, puerile criticism by one philosopher of another., etc., etc. It is refreshing to encounter a very readable, well explained summation of the various philosophies of these iconic figures without endlessly try to slog through their sonorous screeds. This is the first book on philosophy I've had trouble putting down. I can't wait for Gottlieb's next one!

“The Dream of Enlightenment” by Anthony Gottlieb It seems that much of what is worth remembering in Western (European) Philosophy happened in two spurts of about 2 centuries each---the Athens of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle (550-400 BC) and the Enlightenment of Descartes, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke, Newton, Leibniz, Voltaire and Hume (1600-1800). This second period is the subject of this outstanding book (the same author also summarized the first period in his “A Dream of Reason”). The wisdom of the “ancients” of the first period held sway during the intervening period until the 17th century when Francis Bacon (1561-1626), Blaise Pascal (1623-62) and others who believed (in Pascal’s words) Those whom we call the ancients were really new in all things, and properly constituted the infancy of mankind; and as we have joined to their knowledge the experience of the centuries which have followed them, it is in ourselves that we should find this antiquity rather than in others. Bacon’s insistence that all old ideas were suspect and that a Philosopher’s time was better spent finding the facts in the world about him than in dusty libraries motivated others to do just that, although Bacon himself dismissed the results of Galileo (1564-1642) and Johann Kepler (1571-1630) because they were tiresomely mathematical and did not think much of Copernicus’ heliocentric model for the universe.. Renee Descartes (1596-1650), who had invented analytical geometry to solve then-modern physics problems about space and motion, undertook the development of a comprehensive mathematical “mechanical” theory for motion of bodies in terms of their interactions with other bodies to replace the ancient Aristotlean theory. His theory of motion was for a short time a rival to that developed somewhat later by Isaac Newton (1642-1727), and he also applied his mathematics to the design of lens for telescopes. He distrusted the senses and thought that all wisdom was to be found by rational thought, a process which led him to several deductive proofs of God. He is remembered mainly as a mathematician and an abstract thinker who made the basis of knowledge the most basic question of philosophy. The work of three very different Englishmen--Thomas Hobbs (1588-1679), John Locke (1632-1704) and David Hume (1711-76), a Dutch-Portugese Jew---Baruch Spinoza (1632-77), a German polymath---Gottfried Leibniz (1646-1716), and two French intellectuals--- Francios Voltaire (1694-1778) and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78), completes the author’s discussion of the Enlightenment. It may seem strange that Rousseau is included in this pantheon of philosophers, because he was definitely not reconciled to the civilization of his day, nor to that of any other. The Enlightenment is generally credited with the ideas that led to the American Declaration of Independence and the French Revolution. It is also frequently credited with the ideas that led to the reign of terror following the French Revolution and to the Russian and German dictatorships of the 20th century. According to the author, the case for the Enlightenment is on its firmest ground when we point to the waning power of religious authorities to interfere in and even end people’s lives, to the toleration of religious dissent, to scientific progress, and to the gradual dismantling of political institutions that were too close to feudalism and too far from democracy.

Around 1955, I was a teenager visiting the small Brazilian town of Americana, in São Paulo state. While out walking one day, I noticed a shabbily dressed older man across the street. He called out to me in perfect English, "Hey there, are you the new kid in town?" "I suppose I am", I replied. "Are you American?""Naah", he said, with a distinct Southern accent, "I'm, just one of the local yokels".Intrigued, I accepted his invitation for a cup of coffee and we chatted in English for about an hour. This is when I first learned of the migration of many Southern families to Brazil in the post Civil War era. He told me of his grandparents' leaving their native land and making a new life in Brazil, and some stories about other families who, although assimilated into Brazilian society, still maintained their language and many customs of the Antebellum South. Now, all these years later, I found this wonderful book which has filled in many of the gaps of information I have wondered about for the last nearly 60 years.I highly recommend it for anyone interested in American history. Many details of the Civil War have been left out of the history books most Americans are familiar with and this book will provide some insight into the skewed perceptions between the American North and South to this day, and be of interest to many, even those who have no ties to Brazil as I do.

Only recently learned about this adventure and enjoyed reading this account. Turns out a relative was one of those who moved to Brazil with that group and reading this book brought it into focus.

I enjoyed every page of the book because I was quite familiar with many of the descendants of the group that settled in Americana and Santa Barbara. Having spent two years in Boarding School in Piracicaba (Colegio Piracicabano)I became close friends with many of them and spent many weekends in their homes. Some of these friendships lasted a lifetime. The book gave me the background history which, as a teenager, I wasn't too interested in but, as an adult I find fascinating.Lucy Gorham Colman

Most people have no knowledge of the Confederados who left the Southern US following the Civil War. Having lived in Brazil I have heard of Santa Barbara and the Americana community. This small volume helps fill the missing chapter in the record of the people who chose to rebuild their lives outside the US after Appomattox. It doesn't take long to read but it is full of great story lines to imagine the lives of the Confederados and their descendants.

Not what I expected, but still informative.

This is a well written book, which is easy to read. The author is a reporter and grandson of a Confederate family that emigrated to Brazil after the civil war. This chapter in post Civil War US history is not well known nor documented. The author provided an excellent and facinating depiction of the southern emigration to Brazil and other parts of Central and South America. As the son of a former Methodist missionary, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the early influence of southern Confederate settlers in Brazil and their experience. The author is credible and offers a unique perspective on this historical experience.

Fairly concise and interesting introduction to the story of the Confederates who left the U.S after the Civil War to start a new life in Brazil. Includes lots of personal stories.

It was a very informative read.

The UN Women/USNC Gulf Coast Book Club met on Monday,November 9, 2015 to discuss My House in Damascus: An Inside View of the Syrian Revolution, by Diana Darke. The author has traveled through Syria since 1978, writing guide books for the entire region. She moved to Damascus in 2004 and bought her historical villa in 2004. Through her experiences of buying and restoring her house that she later offered as a sanctuary to friends, Darke presents a clear picture of the realities of life on the ground and what hope there might be for Syria's future. We discussed major themes of the book: history, culture, analysis of the revolution/civil war, human relationships and the author's own spiritual quest reflected in accounts of the several religions of Syria. We applauded this book unanimously, our only reservation being the author's writing device of segues from present to past and future, a style that is sometimes disorienting. We all learned a great deal from the book, which led to in-depth discussion of not only the dynamics of the country's plight, but especially that of its internal displaced persons, and international diaspora of refugees.

I loved this book. I bought it because I was fortunate enough to visit two of the Ottoman houses in the Old Quarter of Damascus in 1999. One was in the process of restoration and the other was fully restored. That experience made me appreciate the beauty of those houses. I longed to get the details of how a Western women bought and restored such a house. It is quite a tale and well worth the price of the book in itself. In addition, the author shares an inside view of ongoing Syrian tragedy. I appreciated the way that she told the story in terms of what happened to her, what she observes, and the experiences of other individuals. It's grounded in reality, unlike the comments of so many experts on television who have never even been to Syria. Don't miss this book if you have an interest in the Syrian people and their beautiful country.

A very well written book, although the time line is a big confusing as it weaves back and forth. However, it is an insightful depiction of today's Syria and the tragedies that have come to this beautiful city and country. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in knowing about Syria and its people and particularly the ancient city of Damascus. Now that Palmyra has been damaged by ISIS and other places are in danger, we can only hope that Damascus will survive.

Amazing insider look at Syria during the war viewed from the "ground floor" of every day life thru the acute observation of a foreigner who loves the people and goes with the flow of the events.Interesting testimonial story

What a delightful yet painful look at Syria! All too often war seems impersonal and abstract and those involved seem less than human. This book humanizes the Middle East, its people and provides a deeper look into the situation. Darke provides great insights into the roots and depth of culture. I heartedly recommend this book

Amazing story of Ms Darke's experience in Damascus and her obvious love and understanding ofthe country which I totally share ..

A compelling, personal view of a part of the world that is being forever altered by war. Darke not only shows today's places and people in a straightforward and non-judgmental light, she manages to illustrate their social and architectural history in a very charming way.

A very well writtten and timely book. At this time in history when the Syrians are considered "the bad boys" in the world, it was enlightening to read Diana Darke's affirmation of the dignity and hospitality of the Syrian peiople. Merrill Kaegi

I received this work through the Early Reviewer program and requested it on the basis of what I felt was a potentially fascinating subject. I was very disappointed with the book, both with respect to its content, but more importantly, the writing style of the author. The tone of the author in this work is unbelievably informal and “snarky”. Given that the subject matter of the work is quite serious, it is jarringly inappropriate. The writing style employed by the author would be appropriate in a comedian’s autobiography or a celebrity tell-all, not a review of the worst plagues in world history. Putting aside the tone and style, the writing is simply not very good in any case, somewhat of a surprise, given the author’s background. Bottom line, it was terribly annoying and made it impossible for me to appreciate the subject matter. In addition, the book contains so many misspellings, punctuation and grammar errors that whoever edited the book should be fired. While this was a “reader’s copy”, and many of the errors may be corrected before final publication, numerous proofs and drafts are approved prior to bound publication. If I were associated with this work, I would be highly embarrassed. The photographs included in the book were of VERY poor quality and were uniformly accompanied by what I can only assume the author thought to be witty and pithy comments. She was wrong. I could find very little of value in this work.

In college, I majored in environmental science with a really large amount of public health thrown in on the side. I studied numerous diseases, from plague, to malaria to Legionnaire's disease. There were a god number of "plagues" in this book that I had never heard of, let alone studied. The author goes back to ancient Roman times and moves her way to the (almost) present day. I was disappointed that there were some disease not covered, but in the epilogue she indicated that she wanted to cover diseases that had been "conquered" so she left a lot of things out…like malaria, yellow fever, etc. She did, however, cover an interesting assortment of diseases which are either still in the back ground to this day (plague) or have been all but eradicated from the face of the earth. The author writes with a witty style, which at first turned me off, but as I thought about it, most people wouldn't have been able to handle all of the death and disease presented without an occasional laugh. And she is humorous at just the right times. The message from the book is that if we study how we screwed up in the past, maybe we will handle disease differently in the future, and believe me, there are diseases lurking around the corner that you have never dreamed of, let alone heard about. Zika maybe bad, but is nothing next to some of the other diseases lurking in the shadows.I recommend the book as a wonderful look at diseases from the past in a short ( and not too boring) way. It is informative and humorous…overall an excellent read!

LOVE. I shouldn't have laughed so much reading a book about plagues! Ms Wright's style won't be for everyone, but it's a great read for anyone who wants to learn about how ridiculous and heroic people can be. Her style is colloquial and approachable. We need more author's that cascasn bring levity to nonfiction. I see her books as a great starting point to explore a topic and then find further information on the events or subjects that interest you.

I had no idea the Spanish influenza started here in America! I learned a lot from the book, but I also love the way Jennifer Wright writes! The book has moments that can pull at your heartstrings (the polio chapter) and at other times make you so angry with your fellow humans (Woodrow Wilson really was the worst!).I highly recommend this book to anyone! Get it for the historian or hypochondriac in your life... hell, honestly its the perfect Christmas present for anyone you know who likes to read!

This starts out strong with its description of the Antoine plague and its societal effects. This is where the book is strongest: describing a disease on an individual level in colorful prose, then describing the disease on a societal level. Where the book gets weaker is in the later chapters, where the author focuses more on particular individuals. So for Typhoid, we learn a lot about Typhoid Mary, but not a lot about what Typhoid does to a person or how widespread or devastating it really was.

This was an interesting book about the worst plagues in history, but it was presented with humor as well as historical fact. This was not an all-inclusive review of diseases that have plagued humans, but it covered the most well-known. Beginning in Roman times to the current day, the author covered the interesting diseases and how the deaths of the population were dealt with. It is interesting to note the treatments of the times as well. The author seems to be an aficionado of Game of Thrones, which she injected into the writing. It was also like listening to John Oliver's discussion of events and comparing them to common occurrences. Highly recommended!

This was an interesting book. It was funny and conversational. It was more of what I would expect from a blog than a book. I don't really have any problems with that, it just isn't what I normally go for. I did learn some new things, and I did laugh a bit though. This book is for light reading. It isn't for people who are into dry history books with no commentary.

I love this book. I work in the medical field, and have a hankering for history, so plagues throughout time definitely hits the spot for me. Jennifer Wright is both highly intelligent and sarcastic, providing factual references mixed with witty remarks. I highly recommend this book, I can't wait to read her others!

The author is skilled in providing just enough medical detail about the disease but also stories that highlight real cases. This did not disappoint.

Comprehensive discussion of the natural law and its philosophical foundations.

Heinrich Rommen's book titled THE NATURAL LAW was written in 1946 and published in 1947 against the background of the rise and fall of the National Socialists and the terrible tragedies of W.W. II. Rommen's book is a poignant reminder of what the law should as opposed to the will of the ruler, the party, the Volks, etc. This book is based on the Catholic Scholastics and especially St. Thomas Aquinas'(1225-1275) thinking. Rommen included the later Scholastics such as Suarez c. 1545-1618). Readers are shown a reasonable and logical view of law vs. the will of the ruler(s).Rommen deals with Natural Law as an attempt to reflect what religious men and women consider as a reflection of God's Law. The thinking was that since God is the Creator and author of nature, Natural Law should be an attempt to reflect God's nature rather than assigning an arbitrary will to Divine Providence.Rommen's book is clear that the two views re God's nature as opposed to God's arbitrary will are important in understanding the temptation to impose unbridled power of rulers which can lead to tyranny and evil. St. Thomas Aquinas' views are a prominent feature of the book. Rommen reminds readers that people should try to maintain a moral code that reflects God's nature. Rommen also deals with the opposing view that Original Sin means that men are depraved and can do nothing right to please God. Rommen uses St. Thomas Aquinas and the later Scholastics to counter this view. Basically, Rommen argues that Original Sin did not mean that men were depraved. He argued that men were not the best they could be, and the Natural Law not only protected people from criminals, but it also provided a useful guide for men to act justly and fairly with other men all of whom were created in God's image. These debates started c. 1300s in the disputes between the Realists and Nominalists. The Nominalists are that concepts and ideas were merely names agreed upon for philosophical debate. The Realists argued that concepts and ideas were realities and were vital to an understanding of God, Natural Law, and a just moral code. As St. Thomas Aquinas stated, the law was intended to give each man his due. The Nomialist's arguements re the lack of validity trivialized serious philosophical discussion and deprived the views of God's nature. They emphasized God's will since concepts were mere names and could not lead to Natural Law. This was a very dangerous concept since men could not make moral decisions since God's will precluded men from acting a moral agents. The Nominalists also argued that whatever evil occured was the will of God. In other words they ascribed evil to God which St. Thomas Aquinas the Suarez stated was impossible with God's nature. The Nominalist implied predestination to men whose fate and salvation were already determined before men were born. In other words, as Rommen makes clear, men were incapable of making moral decisions and had to accept evil as God's plan. This arguement was then used to condone the evil tyranny of unjust rulers who appointed themselves as God's lieutenants on earth. The implied arguement, later accepted in Protestant cirles, was that criticism of an unjust ruler was an attack on God. Rommen presents St. Thomas Aquinas' view that an unjust law was no law at all and led men to sensilessly act in an evil way. Suarez went so far as to argue that an unjust tyrant could lawfully be deposed as such a ruler set a bad example and committed his subjects to act in complience with evil.Rommen was not a phony idealist. He was clear that no ruler or political party could create heaven on earth. Rommen argued that Natural Law and an attempt to get men to act in accordance with God's nature was a reasonable concept of law which could prevent the excesses of tyranny and evil. Since rulers held power, they too were required by law to act as best they could with God's nature which admitted no evil.As mentioned above, Rommen's book was written at the end of W.W. II and was a reminder of what men suffered from blindly listening to evil rulers and political parties. The usefullness of this book could be projected to later attempts at arbitrary power regardless of political labels. One should note that the National Socialists were much less successful in German elections in Catholic regions of Germany during the 1930s, and Hitler & co. (Stalin & co. as well)hated Pope Pius XII and Catholic leaders in their domains. They knew that a relience on a reasonable Natural Law undermined their own self imposed importance. Rommen is clear about this. While THE NATURAL LAW was translated from German into English, the prose is clear. This book is a good introduction to Scholasticism and legal reasoning. The book is also valuable for thoughtful men who can refute the appeals to tyranny with better ideas.

D.S.Heersink makes a common error commited by modern sophists; and that is of presuppossing the truth of a premise on the basis of the erroneous human authority of previous modern sophists. In this case the previous modern sophists are the empiricists David Hume and G.E.Moore. This appeal to fallible human authority is not philosophy but ideology because philosophy proves its conclusions as opposed to presuming their truth based on fallible human authority. D.S presumes that Hume and Moore already decisively refuted the natural law theory(NLT). However, they have done nothing of the sort. Anyone educated in moral philosophy(ethics) as exposited by Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas knows the principles of ethics present in theoretical philosophy, specifically the scientific theory of human nature and the Aristotelian science of metaphysics as exposited by Aquinas and Aristotle. Aquinas derives moral goodness from human nature in the natural moral law; see his Summa Contra Gentiles Book III:129. This is a little known text that proves the existence of the natural moral law, not from the eternal law of God as in the Summa Theologiae but from human nature itself. In my course paper as a graduate student in philosophy I wrote on this subject and how it relates to the so-called "naturalistic fallacy" arguments against the NLT. I discovered that G.E.Moore and his empiricists/illogical positivists allies are instead the ones who commit a fallacy. They commit the fallacy of equivocation between between a real distinction and a logical(conceptual) distinction. Their fact/value distinction is a reflection of the logical(conceptual) distinction between being and goodness in general; however there is no real distinction between being and goodness in general. In reality being and goodness in general are the same and this is what allows Aquinas to derive moral goodness in the natural moral law from goodness in general as applied to the good and being of human nature. By means of the real identity but logical distinction beween the goodness and being of human nature, Aquinas is able to derive moral goodness from the perfections of human nature without violationg the logical distinction between the being of human nature and goodness in general( reflected in the fact/value distinction). Therefore in the G.E.Moore/David Hume objections to the NLT they commit a fallacy of equivocation between the real distinction between fact and value, which is false and is opposed by Thomistic NLT, and a logical(conceptual) distinction between fact and value, which is true and is affirmed by Thomistic NLT. Thus NLT do not confuse facts and "values" and there is no such thing as a naturalistic fallacy. Instead, it is Moore and Hume and their like that commit the fallacy of equivocation between a real distinction and a logical distinction. Further, contrary to Heersink's comments this book by Rommen is an excellent study in the history of NLT detailing the ancient sophists, like their modern sophistic counterparts, who rejected the natural moral law to the corruption of NLT by classical liberalism as represented by John Locke and other philosophical revolutionaries of the 18th century(they used natural law as a prop for revolution, sedition and classical liberalism). Further D.S.Heersink is seriously ignorant when he comments that only the Catholic Church's moral theology embraces Thomistic natural law. First, Thomistic NLT as proven in Summa Contra Gentiles III:129 and as articulated in his Commentary on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics and Politics and certain strictly philosophical segments of the Summa Theologiae's Treatise on Law and Treatise on Justice and Treatise on Temperance; are essentially distinct from theology because their arguments are based on reason alone. Cicero and Aristotle held to an elementary version of NLT and neither where theologians and both were pre-Christians. Aquinas frequently refers to both Cicero and Aristotle in his writings pertaining to NLT without using them as final authorities in his argumentation for the conclusions of NLT; unlike modern sophists who appeal to fallible human authority as their final word. Aquinas actually proves all the conclusions of NLT using reason alone; which Heerskink would know if he was not ignorant of the works of Aquinas. For example in the Summa Contra Gentiles Book III:122 Aquinas proves that every intentional frustration of the procreative good of human sexuality is intrinsically evil and he does the same in his disputed questions on moral evil question 15, article 3. Since every contraceptive act and every homosexual act is an intentional frustration of the procreative good of human sexuality, by aaa-I syllogism Aquinas proves by reason alone that every contraceptive act and every homosexual act is intrinsically evil. Therefore he lists contraception and homosexual behavior as species of the unnatural vice which violates the cardinal virtue of temperance. As far as abortion is concerned, while it is true that Aristotle erred on this particular issue it was not because of his NLT principles but despite them. Aquinas since he condemned contraception, necessarily condemned all abortion as intrinsically evil since every abortion is the intentional killing of the result of human procreation irrespective of when human life begins. These conclusions of NLT are rooted in Aristotle's proven conclusions of ethics, especially his theory of the virtue of temperance and that of natural justice(which Aristole in his Ethics affirms is universal and transcends every civil law and every political society). Notice in these arguments there is no reference to religious faith and Cicero, Aristotle, and also Aquinas(SCG III:129 and his strictly philosophical texts) exemplify the capacity of moral philosophers to affirm and articulate NLT without reference to religious faith. Further, the best defense of NLT is not Robert George. He is a token political conservative professor at Princeton University who affirms the "New Natural Law Theory" invented by Germain Grisez and promoted by John Finnis and Martin Rhonheimer. This theory, with absurd, ahistorical, and disastrous results, is the result of an attempt to save NLT from the empiricists criticism by Hume and Moore, by conceding their objections to classical NLT and then constructing a NLT that is the product of Kantian ethics and its divorce of practical reason from theoretical reason with Thomistic NLT. This explicitly contradicts Aquinas' own proof of the natural moral law from the theoretical knowledge of human nature as presented in SCG III:129 and has disastrous results regarding the nature of human happiness as consisting in intellectual virtue. Further, the nonsense is the empiricism of David Hume in his Treatise Against Human Nature and the illogical positivism of G.E.Moore in his Principia Ethica both of which theories of knowledge are self-contradictory and therefore logically impossible. In fact any objection to NLT on the grounds that it presupposes the reality of human nature, while accurately representing NLT, is a false objection that presupposes the empiricists denial of nature, human nature, and especially the human intellect's knowledge of nature and human nature. Similarily all denials of nature, human nature, or human intellectual knowledge of these two are based on errors contrary to philosophical physics or to scientific epistemology(includes theory of knowledge). Like the ancient sophists who opposed NLT, these modern sophists start with their erroneous theories of knowledge and fit everthing including their ethical theories into their erroneous theory of knowledge. Both are systematically and intentionally ignorant of the scientific exposition of philosophy provided by Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas. As a result of their ignorance they commit massive errors in their works including a fallacy of equivocation between a real distinction and a logical(conceptual) distinction in their very assertion that NLT commits their invented "naturalistic fallacy". Finally, the best words to end on are the words of Cicero, as quoted from Rommen's book. These words indicate how far classical NLT is from modern political sophistry, masquerading as philosophy, and from the modern political ideologies of classical and modern liberalism; all of which affirm some form of legal dictatorship known as legal positivism and which denies the very existence of a natural moral law. Cicero states that "true law is right reason in agreement with nature; it is of universal application, unchanging and everlasting; it summons to duty by its commands, and averts from wrongdoing by its prohibitions... We cannot be freed from its obligations by senate or people... one eternal and unchangeable law will be valid for all nations and all times... Whoever is disobedient is fleeing from himself and denying his human nature, and by reason of this very fact he will suffer the worst penalties, even if he escapes what is commonly considered punishment." pg. 21 footnote 12 of Heinrich A. Rommen. The Natural Law: A Study in Legal and Social History and Philosophy. Wow!This was not stated by a "religious fundamentalist", a category invented by modernity, but by the non-Christian philosopher Cicero. Now what is true of individuals also pertains to the political society made up of individuals that violate the natural moral law and this is the modern state; the modern state is in violation of the natural moral law because of its promotion of contraception, abortion, sodomy, and pornograpy( the crimes of the modern state) and it will suffer the worst penalties, even if it escpaes what is commonly considered punishment. Unfortunately, my nation the United States of America with its U.S. constitution has been in violation of the natural moral law from its very beginning because of its classical liberalism and racist slavery and now because of the previously mentioned moral evils affirmed by modern liberalism. As far as what texts I recommend to anyone who wants to study ethics and political science. Start with Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics and the Thomistic commentary on this strictly philosophical work. Next study the treatise that Aquinas has on happiness and the treatises on the cardinal virtues, and the treatise on law as presented in his Summa Theologiae. Finally study his commentary on Aristotle's Politics. Many of Aquinas' political writings are collected in an edition by Cambridge. Francis Vitoria is the best Thomistic commentator on matters of political science. Unfortunately, there is no single work that unites all these Thomistic texts into a complete scientific exposition of ethics nor into a complete sicientific exposition of political science. This is something that hopefully will be produced by me in the future. John F. Wippel's "The Metaphysical Thought of Thomas Aquinas" is an excellent historical work that starts this process in metaphysics.

Outstanding read on Natural Law that anticipates the loss of a solid rational for law in a post-modern world. As a teacher of Renaissance history and the Enlightenment, I found this work very helpful. The perspective of a European author that fled Nazi Germany actually is quite refreshing. If you are a student of the history of Natural Law this book is invaluable.

The book came quickly and in excellent condition. I havent used it for class yet.

Natural Law Theory (NLT) was widely discredited by David Hume in his Treatise on Human Nature (1740) and by G. E. Moore in his Principia Ethica (1903), both well before this book was published in Germany during the rise of Nazism. For historical assessments, several texts do a much better job in presenting the historical rise through Stoicism and finally its demise in the Age of Enlightenment. Today, only the Roman Catholic Church, and specifically its Moral Theology, embraces Thomistic Natural Law as its bogus basis for sexual prohibitions (contraception, abortion, homophilia). If a moral reason exists for these prohibitions, it is NOT from Natural Law Theory, it is NOT from the Moral Imperative of the Harm Principle, and it is NOT from Aristotlean Ethics. The Church and those who appeal to Natural Law Theory commit the Fact/Value Fallacy, and the notion that god built a moral system on a fallacy should put this nonsense to rest. The best defense of NLT is Robert George, whose apologetics are elegant as they are dogmatic.
