I cannot express how much I love this book. Finished it, started it over kind of love. Hanif Abdurraqib has an unbelievable ability to connect what music means to our smallest selves and how it impacts to our largest issues. In a word: Brilliant.

My wife bought me this book because of my love of ATCQ. Within the first chapter I realized that I am also a fan of Hanif Abdurraqib! This "love letter" is a really powerful work about how our love of art impacts and shapes our lives. Much more than a simple bio of Tribe, this book is a reflection on growing up in the late 90's and entering adulthood after the turn of the century. While there is more than enough information contained within to please any fan of A Tribe Called Quest, Mr. Abdurraqib uses this as a jumping off point to look at how our admiration of artists whose works touch our lives and the "relationships" that we have with those artists can affect us on a far more personal level. Beautifully written from cover to cover and a joy to read. We all need more of this kind of writing in our lives. I will be checking out Hanif's other work!

What do I say? I read this book in one day, and I was drawn in and moved at nearly every page. I appreciate an author who can express deeply about a subject without the need to profess perfect understanding. Honestly I just finished it and am still working out the ways in which this book is fantastic.

I enjoy his perspectives.

i love this book: a poetic, moving reflection on what it means to be a ‘fan.’ why do we love the music we love? why do we hold certain artists in reverence? what do we do when those artists fail us in some way, when we feel betrayed by them, by their art?i learned much reading “go ahead in the rain,” learned about the crash that killed otis redding; about the sad fate of child prodigy, rapper chi-ali; about what exactly went down, that one fateful night at the source awards.i gained an appreciation for q-tip’s true genius, his work ethic. i learned of jet magazine’s genesis story (“a small magazine started by one black man and some furniture as collateral started a movement once, they say”). i was reminded of what it was like, growing up in the 90s.remember mixtapes? “no skippable songs,” abdurraqib writes. “the trick was recording from cd to cassette. recording from cassette to cassette was an option but only for the desperate” because: sound quality.remember how insane/amazing those source magazine covers were? the one with missy and timbaland reenacting a scene from the matrix? the one where dre holds a gun to his head?start to end, this book is awesome (chapter 10, 'family business' destroyed me DESTROYED. 'common ground' took a knife to my heart) but i think what i'll remember most are the open letters abdurraqib writes, to q-tip,to phife. the letter about a tribe called quest’s second album, “the low end theory” was exceptional. they didn’t deserve the album, abdurraqib writes to tip, but you gave it to them anyway."there are cookouts and 'soul train' lines on this album. there are hot rooms and hot card games. i imagine the low end to be anything you could touch once but is now just a fading dream. i imagine the low end to be a bassline that rattles your teeth, too. but i also consider the low end to be the smell of someone you once loved coming back to you. someone who sang along to aretha, or minnie, or otis. someone who loved you once and then loved nothing.”okay? o-kaaay. five stars, obviously. thank you for your art, hanif abdurraqib.

Even for those who no longer believe in its message, the Bible is generally regarded as a treasure trove of poetic and artistic gems that over the centuries (from Dante to Shakespeare, Milton and T.S. Eliot, to throw out names almost at random) have shaped Western values and sensitivities. It might, therefore, be hard for us to imagine how foreign, even barbaric the Bible appeared to the cultural expectations of late Antiquity. In his "Confessions" Augustine freely admits that for a long time he found it impossible to accept the message of the Bible because it was written in a style so foreign to the liberal arts he had been trained in. It was only when he heard Saint Ambrose of Milan preach on the Bible with all the rhetorical skills late antiquity demanded of its cultural elite that he began to appreciate the Biblical message in its own right. Ten years later--by now probably already bishop in the African town of Hippo--Augustine sits down to help others to make a similar transition from disdain to admiration for the Bible. Augustine first summarizes the central message of the Bible (quite an astounding and beautiful accomplishment) and then turns to the difficult medium of the message. He gives advice on how to gain the necessary factual and linguistic information to approach the biblical environment and how to deal with its often so strangely figurative and obscure style of expression. After an hiatus of over 40 years, in which he--like Ambrose--preached on themes of the Bible using all the tricks of the rhetorical trade of his time, he concludes his treatise by taking a decidedly different approach: He shows his contemporary readers that the Bible should not be perceived as a barbaric import because it exhibits many of the rhetorical devices that even a Cicero could not have improved on. These are the same strategies he recommends to a new generation of preachers. -- The value of this treatise is, in my view, primarily an historical one. It shows a crucial turning point in Western culture and it shows the architect of that turning point at work. After Augustine the Bible could no longer be regarded as a foreign import into Western culture. Instead it became fully integrated and soon even assumed the role of foundation stone of that same culture, an astounding turn about. -- This is a fascinating book, though the editor could have been more forthcoming in explaining some of the rhetorical concepts that are important for Augustine's argument.

This small book summarizes much of Augustine's thought and theology. All good comes from God and man's fall precipitated the covenants, laws and finally Christ. Our source for this is the Bible but how should that book be read and taught? Augustine reveals the importance of identifying metaphor in analyzing texts and the danger of being over literal. Language, therefor, is the key theme both in understanding scripture and explaining it appropriately to the education and intelligence of the listener. He then goes on to emphasize the need for the homilist to understand rhetoric at least to balance the rhetoric of disbelievers. I would consider this book essential reading for any serious Christian today or, for that matter of any student of philosophy. I have yet to read any modern or even earlier writer who thinks and writes more clearly on scripture and language.

Augustine is to be greatly appreciated for his impact on culture, sacred and secular. The man was a theological genius whose writings are extremely practical, addressing the issues of his day within the church. This is considered by many to be one of the first treatments of the fields of homiletics and hermeneutics. Highly recommended for anyone studying Christian preaching and = teaching. Be warned though, Augustine's tendency to allegorize much of Scripture might offend the modern mind which prefers a more literal hermeneutic.

This is not the kindle edition of the paperback that it is paired with and is not pagination in a way that makes it viable for academic purposes.

An intriguing work. One of Augustine’s more obscure writings but very thoughtful. Not an easy read.

This give a good account of how to read and interpret scripture using the four sense, namely, literal sense and the three spiritual sense ( allegorical, prologogical and anagogical). What Augustine demonstrate that one can move to a mean, literal sense to multiple application

Thx

This is not the translation you were looking for.I bought this under the impression that it was translated by R.P.H Green, as that was the translation I needed. Had I looked into the sample (which admittedly I should have done), I would have realized it was translated by someone completely different. But as it is, under the editorial reviews it claims to be translated by Green, including an "about the author" section about Green. This is very misleading and I just wasted $7 on the wrong translation. Shame on you.If you're looking for the version by Green, this is not the translation you were looking for.
