This book is fantastic! The images are spectacular, it reads like a well-written magazine article, and it provides enough information to really understand what's going on, without feeling like a textbook. It has a solid backing in scientific and practical information, and I recommend it to everyone - just know what you're getting before you buy:1. This is a wonderful book about the human body. If you think the human body is offensive, do not buy this book. Yes, it has pictures of women giving birth. Yes, they're naked. If this offends you, I question your need for this book in the first place, but you might be happier with Watch Me Grow, which is sweet and informative, without subjecting you to the harsh reality of the human form. It would be quite a sacrifice in image quality, though. 3D ultrasound just doesn't compare to real optical photos.2. This was not written for your 5-year-old. This book assumes that its audience already knows where babies come from. This is a fantastic book that the whole family can enjoy together, but you may not want to leave the younger ones alone with it or you'll have some serious explaining to do. The more adult sections might help with "the talk" with your teen, but if your child believes a smiling stork will fly by and drop off a new sibling, keep this book in the top cabinet with the cleaning solvents.3. Some of the photos are old. This book has been in print for a long time. Lennart Nilsson has been doing his work for even longer. I was surprised at how many new images there were, but don't be alarmed when you see a few classics as well. No need for reservations - they are some of the most amazing.4. You are not supporting abortion by buying this book (as implied by some 1-star reviews). It is not a gallery of dead babies, it is a gallery of life in all its glory. On pg 326 it is explicitly stated that there are "no photographs of embryos or fetuses aborted by medical or surgical means." Some of the photos are indeed from miscarriages. Of course miscarriages are very sad, but what better way to honor these poor undeveloped individuals than to immortalize them in such a spectacular setting? In a way, these unfortunate souls accomplished more benefit to society in their few weeks of life than some do in many decades.If these five concepts do not bother you, you will fall in love with this book. It is everything a pregnancy book should be. It's a great buy not only for expectant parents, but for anyone who has ever been a fetus. Buy with confidence.

I received the original book many years ago when I was having my first child. I have been giving it as a gift ever since to colleagues, relatives or friends who are expecting. The new version has amazing pictures and excellent information on the growth of the baby. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the growth and development of a baby.

When I was a girl, my mom had an earlier version of this book. It was fascinating! There were so many pictures of the different stages of development. This newer version has fewer pictures. I bought it so my grandson could see what his baby brother â€œlooks likeâ€ as he is growing in mommyâ€™s tummy, but I think he will be bored with this book. Iâ€™m somewhat disappointed...

I absolutely loved this book! I feel like there are so many "novel" type pregnancy books out there but this is more of a science book. With photos and interesting to the point facts. It goes through every aspect of pregnancy, from start to finish. It was well written and beautifully documented. I highly recommend it!

This is a book I grew up with. As the oldest of six children there were lots of babies and baby books around the house. A Child is Born was a book I pored over as a child, exploring the miracle of birth as we excitedly awaited a new sibling. When I became pregnant with my first child this was the book I wanted first. My mother's original copy is long gone so I found this new, updated version. It has the same wonderful and updated information and beautiful photos. I only wish it were as big as the original copy we had as kids. This version is a bit smaller than the coffee table sized book we had. The larger scale just gives greater justice to the beauty of the photographs. This is the only book I've found that gives a full understanding of your baby's development at various stages without overwhelming detail. It's a great resource that I pull out regularly as we enter each new stage. It isn't full of baby advice, but rather follows the miracle of birth from a scientific point tracking development with beautifully detailed photographs.

I bought this book back in 1980 when I was pregnant with my daughter. She just found out she is pregnant and I gave it to her. Although the edition is a bit dated, 2003, (things like blood tests etc. aren't current), the photographs are amazing and facts are interesting. My daughter loves the book and I (still) do too.

I truly adore this book - back when my first son was born in 1982, I used it as a guide as to what was happening inside my body. The pictures are incredible and instructional; my three-year-old granddaughter is expecting twin siblings so we were looking through/discussing what was happening in mommy's body. It was great to have photos to show her/teach her with. Bodies are awesome - from conception to death. Enjoy!

Fantastic book. Had it during the 80s and it's still good today although upgrades have come to the market place. Better everything so more can be shown. I ordered one and received a kind of ratty copy of the original from that era. That's not what I had in mind when I ordered it. I'll wait a bit longer and order another one, better than the original. Doesn't pay to cut corners in some areas of a marketplace. :)

When I was searching for Taize materials, I was frustrated by not being able to see what songs were included in this book so I decided to list them for others to see once I got my copy. Everything on the CD of the same name will be in here as well as several others. There are a total of 50 songs with hymn-like piano parts. Many also contain brass quartets, flute parts or verses for cantors to sing, etc. The listing below includes alternate names in other languages, for example Ubi Caritas and Live in Charity are the same song. I hope this will be helpful to others. While this was pricey, it has 88 songs in it along with music for the keyboard, recorder, flute, oboe, trumpet, cello or bassoon. It also breaks out the canter part as well.

The larger portion of the music included in the book seems like it will be usable even though all the instruments for which parts are included aren't available to me. Taize worship is not something my church does on a regular basis, but on those occasions when we do have a Taize service, the book will be a valuable asset.

This is a wonderful book filled with so many great songs. It has sheet music for accompanying musician. It includes verses to some songs that you CAN NOT find in any other book currently for sale. It's printed in a large format that's easily read, even in low light. The publisher stopped production of this book and split the songs up among several "new" books. When I tried to buy this book from the publisher, they first denied it's existence, but finally said they'd sell me a book for MUCH more than what AMAZON sells it for??? If you utilize the wonderful music of the Taize' community at any time, get one of these before they're gone for good.

Would have given 5 stars, but for something I thought was new I was a little disappointed. The front cover had a small crinkle mark and the back cover had either a dirt or pencil smudge, which I thought was strange for a "new" product. However, the inside pages (which is probably what's most important) were clean and mark free. So 5 stars for the inner content, but 4 for the questionable exterior condition of the front and back covers.

Used for vocal accompaniment for choir and small ensemble; Taize church services. Very good selection of Taize songs---there are others in use that are not in the book, but this book contains the most popular ones.

Beautiful songs and ostinato refrains great for a taize prayer service, or performing as a meditational piece post-Eucharist. There are also flute parts included in the book and it is full of song choices.

I am pleased with this music collection. It arrived in excellent shape (better than I expected from the description) and on time. I have been using it to plan TaizÃ© services for the church I serve.

These Bach arrangements are hard to find, so I was pleased to find this. However, the print size has been reduced and can be difficult to read. These are challenging pieces to learn, and the small print doesn't help. The flip side is that these works would be very expensive to buy in full size format, so this was an affordable alternative.

This has been a great value. The Toccata and Fugue in D-Minor, the Chaconne, and 'Nun komm der heiden heiland' have all become standards in performances and competitions, and are very enjoyable to play (the 1st Liszt Mephisto Waltz Busoni arrangement is as well). I bought this book after getting frustrated with the IMSLP versions in ForScore on my iPad. I definitely got my money's worth, but wouldn't expect the binding on this book to last forever.

This is a decent rendition of this work and is well transcribed for solo on either piano or organ. It is not the cut version I've seen so often or made too easy.

Nice collection of beautiful but very difficult pieces. I am working on some of the easier Choral Preludes transcribed by Busoni.

Exceptionally fast and efficient service without being too expensive. The contents are interesting. The Bach purist would probably not be impressed.

This book is quickly becoming one of my favorites because it is helping me decide between using COM or CORBA in our future product line. I know COM fairly well but didn't know CORBA, thus this book is helping me immeasurably. Talk about perfect timing! Using this book I am can compare the architectures as advertised- but I can also get a feel for the coding effort involved by using the code samples supplied. This was been an unexpected bonus and will allow me to prepare the development teams for whatever path I take. I have recommended your book to others in the company and it is now required reading for my architecture team.

Jason's book offers a unique blend of technical education, architectural insights, and developer tips while spanning an impressive range of topics.Jason compares COM and CORBA, gives real-world examples of how to make COM and CORBA interoperate, demonstrates how to use each technology on client desktops and servers, discusses integration with mainframe applications and asyncronous communications services, and provides illuminating examples for Visual Basic, (Visual) C++, and Java developers.As if this weren't enough, he provides code samples that work with Iona Orbix, Microsoft Transaction Server, Microsoft Message Queue, and InPrise (Visigenic) Visibroker.

Barrow shows, to speak plainly, the complete takeover of the university system from about 1860 onward, by Corporate America. Formerly controlled by religious leaders and teachers. Very precise data is provided to show, step by step, this takeover. Universities became the servants of Corporations and to the detriment of labor. There is a method to their madness, you might say. Anyone who has read John Taylor Gatto's Underground History of American Education, should read this, too, and vice-versa.As well, Universities were corporatized so that salaries were dramatically reduced over time, with most profit going to the University "Corporation." Universities then became research centers to aid big business in research and development. This book reveals much not well known or publicized. As another reviewer did mention, it does appear to have a slight Marxist slant, but that does not change the value of what Barrow presents.One criticism from me would be that the language seems a bit cryptic at times, and not easily understood. But much of the data is plain enough and it gets easier to understand as the book goes on.Perhaps it is possible Barrow was even a bit nervous in presenting the information so he may have chosen a cryptic style to add a layer of security. But the book is a must have, must read! 5 Stars, despite the difficulty. It is worth the effort.I bought this at Amazon about 8 years ago, used. Glad I did!

In the early days he would wade into crowds to meet people, find the one person in the crowd who would truly both need and benefit from the greatness of his compassion and give them both,answer spontaneous questions, direct obnoxious questioners to Buddhist texts for answers, and generally respond to the ignorance of us, the ordinary impoverished student, seeker or curious observer, spontaneously laugh at his own mistakes and admit his own ignorance(he still does), but the opportunity to see and know The Dalai Lama, the man, has been stifled especially in the West by the overbearing security that interferes with his mobility and puts shivers of Big Brother up one's spine.This book very much reveals to us the man behind the curtain who insists on transparency.The man who is curious and enchanting, the man who is one of the preeminent Buddhist scholars alive who can explain a difficult concept and point out a simple fact. I just got back from a week long trip to Iceland that involved quite a bit of driving. We drove extensively through the southern part of the country (to Vik), through the Reykjavík-Keflavík area and also the western part of the country north of the Reykjavík area (to Snaefellsjoekull).I read the reviews of this map (obviously not closely enough) before I purchased it and thought that the negative reviews were perhaps due to folks needing more detail on minor roads and the like. We would be sticking to well established roads so i thought there would be no problems for us. After all if it's a NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC map, they're experts in adventure right? And this is called an ADVENTURE MAP so I didn't expect major flaws in the map when it came to the main roads. I was wrong.On several occasions we were disappointed with the lack of detail in the map, that's a small headache and a problem but when driving in a country like Iceland you should expect some flaws as roads do change etc.. the minor stuff we didn't have a problem with and we figured things out as we went. What is unacceptable is that there are main roads on this map that are listed COMPLETELY OFF THE MARK from where they really are located. The inaccuracies cost us dearly one day as we wasted nearly half the day trying to get back on track after being thrown off course because of the map.If you are planning a trip to Iceland that involves driving do yourself a favor and purchase a different map.

We used this map on a 9-day self-guided tour of Iceland. It was great to have. Some people might think that in the age of GPS, printed maps have become obsolete. These are people that haven't visited Iceland, or later became lost and were never seen again. Once you get outside of Reykjavik, the addresses become a bit insane. There's no such thing as "22A Laugavegur Street, Reykjavik Iceland", instead it's something like "Hof Guesthouse Blonduos 541." Have fun putting that in your GPS! Here are some pro's and con's.Pro's:The map is water resistant. This is important in Iceland.It's fold resistant. That is, it withstood a lot of folding without tearing or fading.Almost every farm, village, and attraction is listed.The map delineates between paved and unpaved roads, and also Icelandic "F" roads. This is important if you are travelling in a vehicle that does not have all-wheel-drive, because a lot of roads that the Icelanders consider to be for "passenger vehicles" are actually only passable during two months of the year.Con's:You can't see the entire country on one side. This requires annoying flopping around of the map as you cross over. This happens more then you might think because none of the roads in Iceland go in straight lines.It's not clear what units some of the measurements are in. I eventually concluded that elevation markings were in meters.There were a few places (okay, maybe two) where the way that the roads intersected was not consistent with how they were drawn on the map.

I am currently using this map while bicycling around the island.Here are my issues with the map:1) I consistently find the distances listed do not agree with those listed on the road signs. The signed distances are accurate , the distances listed on the map are usually inflated.2) The visual or spatial depictions are often wrong. A road intersection that is depicted as being very close to an earlier intersection is sometimes several kilometers distant.3) The bigger towns seemed to be listed correctly on the map. For smaller features and landmarks, the places listed on the map are just not there. Conversely, things and places I find on the ground are not listed on the map.Caveat emptor.

The Nat'l Geo. maps are printed on a tyvek-like paper so hold up very well and are waterproof.This is a very important to dummies like myself traveling by motorcycle.While I like the maps, on the cover is says "revised regularly" ... but this map was last revised in 2010 and is missing some of the major additions that Mexico has made to their highway infrastructure in the last 8 years.

Waterproof travel style map. .Actually very durable, and a good map To large, heavy and bulky for backpacking. Not enough detail for a serious travel. Only a broad overview. I expect more out of something this large. Was basically useless except for having out while planning. I did not take it with. I love actual maps, books ect, but in todays modern world found online map apps to be a much better resource. A Thai sim card for your unlocked smartphone will cost about the same as this map. I am not a tech savy person and personally hate smartphones, but found them to be the best option in actual practice.

For years I worked in a map and travel store so I was very familiar with NG maps and have generally had a lot of trust in them. That said, there are some things about this map that were lacking. First of all, there was not inset of Reykjavic which would have been helpful. Also, more information on elevations would be helpful. We went in the spring and encountered heavy snow and white out conditions driving at higher elevations that we were unprepared for. Also, a better explanation in the legend about types of roads would prepare the driver better. That said, I encountered so many understatements in both maps and guidebooks that left us unprepared for the landscape so I know NG isn't alone in miscalculating the environs. Things that were great about the map was the scale as well as the durability of the map. It's made of tear proof, water proof material so it will certainly stand up to all sorts of use. The temptation when driving Iceland might be to get a small, fuel efficient car (gas is terribly expensive) but depending on when and where you are traveling, you may want to upgrade to a sturdy 4 wheel drive vehicle due to the fact that many roads are pocked with pot holes or made of dirt or gravel, or generally very "rustic".
