Amazon.com Review

Product Description Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made it out of the bloody arena alive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what's worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss's family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins's groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year. A Q&A with Suzanne Collins, Author of Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games) Q: You have said from the start that The Hunger Games story was intended as a trilogy. Did it actually end the way you planned it from the beginning? A: Very much so. While I didn't know every detail, of course, the arc of the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, to the eventual outcome remained constant throughout the writing process. Q: We understand you worked on the initial screenplay for a film to be based on The Hunger Games. What is the biggest difference between writing a novel and writing a screenplay? A: There were several significant differences. Time, for starters. When you're adapting a novel into a two-hour movie you can't take everything with you. The story has to be condensed to fit the new form. Then there's the question of how best to take a book told in the first person and present tense and transform it into a satisfying dramatic experience. In the novel, you never leave Katniss for a second and are privy to all of her thoughts so you need a way to dramatize her inner world and to make it possible for other characters to exist outside of her company. Finally, there's the challenge of how to present the violence while still maintaining a PG-13 rating so that your core audience can view it. A lot of things are acceptable on a page that wouldn't be on a screen. But how certain moments are depicted will ultimately be in the director's hands. Q: Are you able to consider future projects while working on The Hunger Games, or are you immersed in the world you are currently creating so fully that it is too difficult to think about new ideas? A: I have a few seeds of ideas floating around in my head but--given that much of my focus is still on The Hunger Games--it will probably be awhile before one fully emerges and I can begin to develop it. Q: The Hunger Games is an annual televised event in which one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts is forced to participate in a fight-to-the-death on live TV. What do you think the appeal of reality television is--to both kids and adults? A: Well, they're often set up as games and, like sporting events, there's an interest in seeing who wins. The contestants are usually unknown, which makes them relatable. Sometimes they have very talented people performing. Then there's the voyeuristic thrill—watching people being humiliated, or brought to tears, or suffering physically--which I find very disturbing. There's also the potential for desensitizing the audience, so that when they see real tragedy playing out on, say, the news, it doesn't have the impact it should. Q: If you were forced to compete in the Hunger Games, what do you think your special skill would be? A: Hiding. I'd be scaling those trees like Katniss and Rue. Since I was trained in sword-fighting, I guess my best hope would be to get hold of a rapier if there was one available. But the truth is I'd probably get about a four in Training. Q: What do you hope readers will come away with when they read The Hunger Games trilogy? A: Questions about how elements of the books might be relevant in their own lives. And, if they're disturbing, what they might do about them. Q: What were some of your favorite novels when you were a teen? A: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle Lord of the Flies by William Golding Boris by Jaapter Haar Germinal by Emile Zola Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury (Photo © Cap Pryor)

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up Following her subversive second victory in the Games, this one composed of winners from past years, Katniss has been adopted by rebel factions as their symbol for freedom and becomes the rallying point for the districts in a desperate bid to take down the Capitol and remove President Snow from power. But being the Mockingjay comes with a price as Katniss must come to terms with how much of her own humanity and sanity she can willingly sacrifice for the cause, her friends, and her family. Collins is absolutely ruthless in her depictions of war in all its cruelty, violence, and loss, leaving readers, in turn, repulsed, shocked, grieving and, finally, hopeful for the characters they've grown to empathize with and love. Mockingjay is a fitting end of the series that began with The Hunger Games (2008) and Catching Fire (2009) and will have the same lasting resonance as William Golding's Lord of the Flies and Stephen King's The Stand. However, the book is not a stand-alone; readers do need to be familiar with the first two titles in order to appreciate the events and characters in this one. Before reading The Hunger Games trilogy, I had more than a few people tell me the first two books were good, but the last one was lacking. I couldn't disagree more. The story is harsh, gruesome, and bleak. It had to be. It's a first person account of an individual who has survived two Hunger Games and plays a major role in a revolution. Of course it's going to be brutal. Had the story drawn to a close with Katniss standing majestically with trumpets blaring and flags waving, it would have been completely unrealistic.I also heard a few people express disappointment in the conclusion of the Katniss/Peeta storyline. I've read people's reviews taking issue with how Katniss and Peeta are represented at the end of Mockingjay, asking "Where's the passion?" Passion? Are they insane? First of all, the story is told in first person by a character who is admittedly not at all comfortable being demonstrative and doesn't respond well to those who are. There was never going to be a hearts/candy/flowers declaration happening here. Peeta has a borderline obssessive love for Katniss throughout most of the trilogy. The way I read the story, by the end of the first Hunger Games, she returns the feeling. Though hesitant to think why she does the things she does, or to state it aloud, she expresses it in so many different ways throughout the remainder of the trilogy, there really is no doubt. Despite the fact that she is suffering major PTSD, she agrees to take on the stress of being the symbol of revolution and take a front line role to bring him back. Regardless of the amount of trauma they both endure, they still eventually turn back to each other. Gale was a strong character, but he had not gone through what Katniss did in the arena and would never have been able to understand that part of her. The time she spends clinging to him and avoiding Peeta is essentially an attempt to return to the person she was before the games (which was never going to happen). Peeta was the walking, living, breathing reminder of the trauma endured. I thought it telling that Peeta returned to Region 12. Like Gale, he could have gone anywhere when it was all over, yet he went where Katniss was. Really, Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch needed each other to become human again (or as human as they were ever going to be). Katniss reminded me of uncles I had who, when they returned from war, sat in a darkened room, staring at a wall day after day for over a year before they could handle being amongst the living again.I'll admit part of me would have liked President Snow's demise to be more than it was. Considering the amount of suffering he caused, part of me is bloodthirsty enough to have wanted him to suffer a great deal more. There are also characters I would have liked to survive (Finnick, Cinna, and Prim to name a few), but their deaths helped to illustrate the randomness and unfairness of death in wartime. There are parts of this story we'll never get to see because it is told from Katniss' point of view. We see only what she sees and know only what she thinks is going on. I, for one, would be interested in knowing more about events of the story from Peeta and/or Haymitch's point of view. Peeta's fight back from his memory hijacking would be an intriguing read.Ultimately, I found this book engaging, infuriating, exhausting, and funny all at the same time. To have had Katniss serene and sweetly declaring life to be sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows would have been absurd. She is with a husband (partner?) whom she loves and is utterly devoted to. She has two children she loves, but is worried what they will think when they know the role their parents played in the past. She and Peeta are happy, but remain somewhat haunted which is perfectly realistic for what the characters have gone through.

You know a book is good when it crawls inside your head and snuggles there. When you are thinking through it as you read it, and thinking about it long after you’ve read the last word on the last page.I had little to no expectations when I first started reading the Hunger Games Trilogy. If a book is trending and seems interesting, I will add it to my “to read” list. This is how I first started reading Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. After finishing Mockingjay, I was blown away. All I could think was, how many of the YA readers will understand the nuances of Collins’ message? She hooked you in with the “will she or won’t she” scenario. “Will she or won’t she” pick Peeta or Gale? “Will she or won’t she” survive a game that does not allow for love to shine through? Those questions get you through the first book, and possibly half way through the second book, but those same questions are a moot point with Mockingjay.Mockingjay stripped you of your hopeless romantic naiveté. There is no room for romance when the world is collapsing around you. There is barely room to breathe. There are no good guys or bad guys, only survivors. Mockingjay asks difficult moral questions: can man ever hold seats of power without corruption? Can war ever actually solve a dispute? At what price is man willing to pay for absolute power?I won’t even go into Collins’ varied symbolisms. Part of the pleasure of reading is finding them yourselves and asking yourself what the author is telling you, the reader. It becomes a communication between the author and the reader. It makes the novel Mockingjay even more important because it is written for younger readers, our future, those that will decide the world events of tomorrow. Collins does all this without a lecture, without loosing her characters or her plot, she has crafted an incredibly well written story that I would gladly recommend to anyone who asks. After I finished reading Mockingjay I had the same feeling as I had when I finished reading The Lord of the Flies so many years ago. Yes, I am comparing Mockingjay to a classic. There is no way around it. Mockingjay, like Lord of the Flies, asks you deep moralistic questions through the point of view of young characters. This is simply another great novel that makes you go hmmm.My favorite quotes from Mockingjay:“Frankly, our ancestors don’t seem much to brag about. I mean, look at the state they left us in, with the wars and the broken planet. Clearly, they didn’t care about what would happen to the people who came after them.”“It’s a saying from thousands of years ago, written in a language called Latin about a place called Rome,” he explains. “Panem et Circuses translates into ‘Bread and Circuses’. The writer was saying in return for full bellies and entertainment, his people had given up their political responsibilities and therefore their power.”“Something is significantly wrong with a creature that sacrifices its children’s lives to settle its differences.”

My long ago 9th grader classical history students alerted me to this trilogy during a discussion on the Minotaur. I asked if anyone knew what a "tribute" was and every hand shot up. We had a sidebar on the Hunger Games. As soon as class was dismissed, I ordered my Kindle copy.I immediately understood Katniss: the mindset to survive unthinkable tragedy, to distrust as first reflex, to protect others, to wrap oneself in emotional distance - yep I got that. Refusal to be a game piece, to surrender myself, That she was in her teens and I in my 40's mattered not a whit. Still, many years later, Katniss and I amble through a reunion - a literary walkabout is still a fresh experience. This is unusual for me. (The films, though entertaining and generally well done, can't compete with the story in my head. Though I confess the idea of drinking fruit juices recommended by s Donald Sutherland voiceover can give me chills.)Peeta's deep love for Katniss and her misunderstanding of it in so many ways - especially feeling unworthy of it - I also understand. I am fortunate to have married my Peeta. He may not have Collins' character 's gift for the right words, I know he loves me always. The other marvelous folks who populate the books are an odd sort of family now. Reading their collective story never gets old. And they always remind me to be my fierce though flawed, self and never be a piece in anyone's games.

Great little book, can read it in an hour or two and you will not regret. It's a 1936 sales pitch to the European powers that it would be bad for Italy to conquer Ethiopia. Did you know that Ethiopia was the first Christian nation? That it was never conquered by a European power? That it is large, populous, optimistic, proud, industrious, and above all green?Written by a Jamaican who came of age in New York during the Harlem Renaissance, the book is passionate, personal, and a downright pleasure to read -- not the dry tome one fears when presented with the term "history book." Nonetheless, despite his personal investment in the thesis, Rogers does not get bogged down in being negative about white supremacy nor resort to conspiracy theories, as do many authors on such topics. Rather he sticks to enriching stories and real facts.Highly recommended.

I had many questions about about Haile Selassie when I picked up this book, I have none as I set it down. If you've ever wondered who the man was, what he did, and why he is revered by some cultures, this book will clear up much of the mystery for you.

I choose this rating for this book. I think J.A. Rogers did a profound job explain the history behind Ethiopia roots from the dark history until now. It also explains the effects of greed and enemy behind politics and religion to control the masses of people. Melanted people need to awake out of the sleep, that has kept us blinded for years.

A short, but informative history. Not everyone knows that Ethiopia was never conquered by any European country or that Ethiopia defeated the Italians and drove them out.

A 4 star rating due to facts and content flowed that have reader an understanding.I liked learning about the country of Ethiopia.I recommend book to other readers that have ever wondered why Ethiopia stood unconquered whereas other nations were.

Very interesting subject matter but sometimes a confusing presentation.I don't have anything else to say about this topic. Okay

It’s a must read to know the facts.!! History matters and knowledge is certainly power

Review

"Michael Fessler's book The Wrestler is a must read for anyone who has participated in the sport of wrestling. This book masterfully shares the struggle that everyone who has dared to put on a singlet and stand in the middle of the ring has had to face. Wrestling is tough. This sport exposes one's character and compels you to do the hard work in growing through the challenges that are exposed. Wrestling forces you to confront those inner demons. You are tempted to choose the undemanding way. The struggle of the wrestler is found in the decision to push toward the uncomfortable path filled with blood, sweat and tears. This book helps to keep the fire fanned toward growing through the inevitable challenges that come with the sport. The reader is reminded that the making of a champion is an intense burning desire. Michael Fessler's newest book will be required reading for my wrestlers before each season begins. I plan on referring to the stories and thoughts that Michael has shared from his personal journey throughout our wrestling season. Every wrestler will identify with the stories and journey because it is the way of the grappler. The challenge is learning to love the process through the hard work regardless of the outcome. Coach and author Michael Fessler teaches the lessons of a wrestler that enable them to become a champion, not only on the mat, but a champion in life."- DAN RUSSELL, 4x NCAA D2 National Champion, and the author of Finish Strong"I read The Wrestler and loved it! The book keeps changing gears and keeps you engaged...just like a great coach! The perfect book for the wrestler in your family."- NICK PURLER, NCAA D1 All-American, Owner of Purler Wrestling, Inc., and the author of The Purler Way"I thoroughly enjoyed Michael Fessler's book The Wrestler! It covers a wide array of topics and areas that will help wrestlers, young and old, better understand the sport and the life lessons that go along with it. A few of my favorite topics addressed are the mental game, humility, passion, and taking advantage of mentors. Very insightful information on all areas, plus many others. I highly recommend this book!"- CHUCK YAGLA, 2x NCAA D1 National Champion, and Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame

The author Michael Fessler is a brilliant writer. I really enjoyed this book. It is based on scripture and I could really relate to this book. Even although I myself am not a wrestler. Both wrestlers and non-wrestlers will benefit from reading this book. It is about your spiritual struggle with God and the problems with life. I also liked the short stories of wrestlers in this book, about their struggles with their faith and how God helped them through it.

As a life long competitor and now collegiate coach, this excellent book walks through aspects that rarely get discussed openly - some of the hard times. Not physical but the mental, self-believe and burnout that athletes experience sometimes in the pursuit of success on the mat. It only emerged later in my life how important discussing these aspects were to athletics and fulfillment while pursuing anything, really. I am grateful to Michael for writing and sharing. Thank you sir.

Good story

Item received promptly with no damage.

Great book, not only for those who enjoy wrestling but great for anyone! Wonderful life lessons throughout the book.

Great book.

Fessler writes in a manner that captivates you and even makes you sweat. This work in particular does more than his previous works in that it offered the element of intensity that the sport of wrestling demands. This work offers more insight into the brutal side of being Christlike. How hard it can be, how unfair it may seem but all in all how much worth it it really is. I highly recommend this short but powerful read.

The Wrestler is the latest in a string of excellent books by author Michael Fessler. In this book he takes the reader on a journey through the mind of a wrestler. This is valuable information for current wrestling athletes, coaches, and the parents of wrestlers. As a life long wrestler and coach, I give the book two thumbs up and place it on the must read list.

With all that is written about JFK it was surprising to me how much I enjoyed revisiting his life and times through this very well researched and written biography. The author provides a balanced view of JFK demonstrating he was a flawed man in some respects but one who was driven to achievements by both his aggressive and manipulative father and his own inner desire to overcome his physical limitations.Professor Dallek spends much page space relating the endless physical ailments and treatments JFK endured for his entire life. While in a general sense I was aware of his back problems I didn't realize the extent of his illnesses before reading this. The most remarkable realization that this book delivered to me was the understanding of the number of issues and dilemmas that he faced as president in such a short compressed period of time- Berlin, Cuba, Southeast Asia, CIvil Rights, Recession, nuclear proliferation all demanding his attention concurrently. I think the book does a good job of giving each the attention and detail required to assess Kennedy's handling of the situations but what it left me with was an appreciation once again of how volatile both foreign and domestic issues were in the early 1960s even though I lived through them as a young kid. Interestingly the assassination is handled rather briefly in just a few pages ( I imagine because so much has already been written of it) and the author chose instead to move directly into an assessment of JFK's legacy. Overall this was a fascinating look at a leader who rose to the challenges that his time in office produced and raises interesting questions about how a potential second Kennedy term would have played out.Outstanding Biography that I recommend to anyone interested in the period.

Although this book spends a little time discussing John F. Kennedy's growing up and personal life, it isn't a complete picture of his life. If your desire to read a book about JFK is focused almost exclusively on his presidency, then this is a good book. I prefer reading books that take the president's life as a whole into consideration. Only the first 20% of the book discusses his upbringing and family and almost no consideration is given to his personal life other than his physical ailments. His wife is only mentioned half a dozen times and no mention is made of his stillborn son during his presidency. These relationships and events certainly would have had an impact on his ability to preside over the nation. I would have liked to have read more about these other aspects of his life and less detail about the issues of his presidency (as important as those are), for a more balanced look at his life. As such, the impression I am left with after reading this is it's an "Unfinished Book."

President Kennedy was the first President I actually remember been born in the mid 50s and he was thought very highly of in my family. His assassination was devastating news and I recall my mom crying. He was a man who expressed noble ideas and made things like our manned moon landing and the Peace Corps possible. This book describes that JFK as well as a flawed JFK. It describes very tough decisions and political calculations. A truly interesting read but not think it would have changed our positive opinion of JFK. In fact, in he served a second term there is good reason to think he would have accomplished many positive things. But please read this book and arrive at your own conclusions.

The author obviously likes JFK, but the book is objective. Having lived through JFK's presidency, I found the review very interesting and quite a contrast to Trump's presidency so far.

I gave up after 522 pages. This is one of the most tedious and boring biographies I have ever read. I regret the amount of time I wasted trying to slog through this book. The writing is extremely dry and wooden. I kept hoping for this to get better. It didn’t. Too many many good things to read to spend time torturing yourself. If you are determined to know what Dallek thinks about JFK, listen to a podcast I terview of Dallek on this book. They are easy to find and catches the essence of his argument without all of the pain of reading this.

Although written for a young reader, even adults will enjoy this sweet tidbit of history during the FDRoosevelt era. It shows the hardships experienced during the depression, hardships which hit families so hard it makes you want to cry - yet there is a sweet slice of hope by two young girls. The one girl (main character) puts all her hope in "one basket" in a desperate means to help save others. This small book pulls you in and finds you cheering in your heart for the young girl. Very readable and very entertaining yet very realistic with history lessons within. A five star recommendation to buy and read!

The story moved along well. The characters were interesting. Some useful bits of history. Overall decent book for a reluctant reader.

I bought this book as part of a recommended supplement for my homeschooled 2nd grader. The length of the chapters and book overall was appropriate for her reading level, and there were not significantly big words. So, this would lead one to believe that the book is aimed at young elementary. I believe the girl in the book is in 4th grade, so that maybe should have been an indication that it was not geared to my daughter.Regardless, the book was very boring and had several competing subplots, none of which were very developed, but all of which took attention away from the main story, which was that this girl's family was going to lose their house and she wrote a letter to the president's wife for help. The first half of the book tries to paint the setting, but it is only effective if someone already knows about the great depression. For elementary kids who are just learning about what it is, this book didn't give a very clear picture of what was going on or why.The true conflict of the story (about the girl's house) finally is introduced about halfway through. It is discussed awkwardly using terms such as "sheriff's auction" which are not defined. It made for tedious reading, as I had to continually stop and explain what was going on. And my daughter kept asking, "When is she going to write the letter?" The letter is actually a very small part of the story. It is only written I believe a chapter or two from the end, and it is resolved very quickly. There were a couple of exciting parts like when the main character is looking for her brother and believes she's being chased by a hobo or gypsy. But other than that, it was not a very enjoyable read-aloud.IMHO, the American Girl books about Kit are a much better introduction to the time period.

Good price, prompt delivery, nice looking book. The book is for a school assignment for my 12 year old so I haven’t read it.

As described.

This book was a quick read. My kids and I finished it in the afternoons over a few days time. It captured the emotion and heartache of what families went through in the Great Depression. We loved it! So inspiring!

This is a great story filled with surprises, courage, love. The love of a family, a community, and of our country.

My daughter asked me to read this book with her. What a lovely story of people overcoming hard times and trying to help others along the way!

As always Jeff Kinney delivers. My students (many who don't like to read) couldn't wait for this book to come out. I have never had any other book/author/series that has been able to get SO many students reading. Not only that but it's been 3rd-5th graders, at all different reading levels that are willing to read this, and love this. They can't wait for the "next Diary of a Wimpy Kid book" to come out. They constantly ask for it. Then to make things even better, almost ALL of them COMPREHEND the book! This series, is a win, win. This book within the first 2-3 days was passed around to at least 3-4 students, that's how fast it was read!

Well, I don't love it, but my 12 year old does. Easy reading for him, but it keeps him entertained and is not watching TV. He has read all of the series books multiple times and will read this one again as well.

In for a penny, in for a pound I suppose. Yeah, I know, these are kid's books but if one has read the first 11 and has a sophomoric sense of humor like mine, firmly based in a prepubescent lad's mindset then obviously one is going to grab this. Interesting the number of folks who have commented that this is the worst in the series when 90% of the reviewers list it as 5 stars. Put me in the laudatory category since I think it is the funniest one yet. His first plane trip reminded me of mine at the same age (well, I actually flew cross country on a Constellation at 18 months old but don't really think that counts) with the added dimension of the "joys" of the current state of air travel - security lines, crammed planes, that horrible feeling when you think you are going to have a whole row to yourself and just as the door is about to close a couple with a toddler shows up to snatch the two empty seats, etc.. His response to the resort his parents have chosen as the family Christmas gift is the same one they went to on their honeymoon is classic. A tad different with 3 kids in tow! Cracked me up when I came across some old photo Christmas cards my sister set up with her kids underwater since one element of this story is the mother attempting to get a great family shot for next year's card. Don't forget to check out the drawings as some of the funnier elements are revealed there. Like most in this series, an enjoyable break from my more serious reading.

It wasn't my favorite book of the series but it was ok it was funny at times and some parts were like yeah right . I didn't hate it

Greg has ro skip Christnas to go to "luxury" and "paradise" or whatever. But it turns iut the add they saw for the trip was false and it ripped them off. Lots of funny problems and interactions. Very Good Read for kids and let me include adults too.

This author has trapped my son to only wanting to read his books because they are that good. For a kid who acts like its a chore to read, he will devour these books in one evening. Its addictive and my son will RE-READ the books too and share it with classmates. Keep up the good work because in our house this authors rocks. Thanks for being such as talented writer. All the kids in our circle loves these books. Because we get 1-2 books a year, it would be great if someone can recommend other authors with Jeff's writing style?

As expected, it's another book full of family fun. The part where Greg thinks that he swallowed a seahorse is hilarious. My daughter kept laughing all the time. We wish that Greg never graduates because that way we will always have really fun and exciting stories to read.

Vacation in Paradise gone wrong. Very entertaining. Not quite as funny as the other books in the series, but still a very good contribution
