Nice pictures. Nice content about the factual basis on which Buddhism is founded...i.e. who is Buddha. It can be broken up into chunks for bed time reading pretty easily, else it has about 45 minutes worth of text (and discussion), which tends to be a little longer of a commitment for one bedtime reading. My 5 year old is old enough to understand the concept of Jesus, where he came from and who he is. This book serves well to teach him the concept of Buddha, where he came from and who he is. I am on a quest to teach my children the variety of spiritual basis in our world and this book is a nice addition to that collection.

This book is gorgeous. I gave it as a gift to a friend who is a Buddhist and has a baby son. The iillustrations are beautiful and the words are written with grace.

I purchased this for my 86 year old aunt to help explain Buddism.It's a "children's book" but explains the religion very well & I feel it is entirely appropriate to inform people of any age.

I love all of the books Demi has written. The words and illustrations flow so beautifully together. Everyone should add Demi,to their collection.

This book is quite beautifully illustrated, and well written for all ages. It's a great introduction to Buddhism for kids or adults.

The illustrations in this book are gorgeous. My 2.5 year old son loves looking at them. The problem is that it was written to make the Buddha look like a fancy God with mystical powers and whatnot. It's very fanciful, and I was hoping for a book that more accurately portrayed the Buddha as he was: An enlightened man, not a god.

Book arrived on time and as described.

While a lovely book, I was hoping to find a more sensible treatment of the Bkessed Buddha's life. He just seems to be one God like all the others with miracles and silly powers. Here's hoping to find a book that treats the Buddha how he was. A man. A man who solved the problem of human suffering for himself and for any who would follow his path.

From interviews with her friends and letters that Joplin wrote home, Angel pieces together her subject's short life, contrasting her conservative upbringing in a small Texas town with the wild 1960s, vividly portrayed both in descriptions and in excellent-quality, full-color and black-and-white photos on almost every page. I grew up listening and loving Janis Joplin. She was the poster child for all of us "southern gals" who didn't fit in. The first present a boy gave me was her album PEARL. I spent hours in front of the mirror lip-synching "Me and Bobby McGee." Yet what did I really know about her? She died from "drugs" (as they said back in the day) when I was a high school sophomore. I knew she was from somewhere in Texas. And that was it. One of my favorite singers and I knew almost nothing because there was so little written about her back then. I know in the intervening years there have been biographies, but I can't think of one that is as suitable for young adults as this one. To understand Janis, you have to understand the 60's, and to most young adults the 1960's are as remote and unknown to them as the 1860's. Angel has done her homework well, helping the reader to understand both the conservative, restrictive Texas that Janis longed to escape, and the wild and wooly world of Haight Ashbury and the San Francisco music scene. Janis and her music were products of both environments. While Janis's drug and alcohol use are not soft pedaled, Angel also explains the difference in the laws and mores of the 60's. (I learned that LSD was a legal substance until 1966!) You are taken inside Janis's conflicted soul...wanting to be "the pretty girl" on the one hand, but acting aggressively uncouth to mask this desire. This is a terrific book, well documented.

Such an amazing talent that changed the face of blues/rock and roll. This book brought me closer to understanding the person she really was, or as close to that as is possible with Janis. I see her as a dynamic lady who was bigger than life but at the same time a scared little girl that just wanted to be loved and accepted. This book will bring you closer to her through so many amazing photos and so much information. I wonder what her response would be to hearing about the legend she has become?

Janis is one of my favorites so how could this be bad.

This book covers Janis's life starting from her days at Port Arthur High School, in Port Arthur, Texas, and covering her life and career up through her untimely death, and even beyond her death. It covers her 3 major San Francisco bands: The Big Brother & the Holding Company Band, The Kozmic Blues Band, and the Full Tilt Boogie Band.The book contains an excellent introduction by Sam Andrew, who probably knew her more than anyone else. He was with her in the Big Brother & the Holding Co. band and the Kozmic Blues band.This book is packed with details about Janis's life & career.The book contains an appendix that covers a time line of Janis's life, beginning with her birth on January 19,1943, in Port Arthur, Texas, continuing through her life & career, her death, and ends with The American Music Masters Tribute to Janis, including Lucinda Williams singing a song about Janis on November 14, of 2009.This book includes many illustrations from Janis's High School Years, from her career, up to tribute performances, after her death. If you like Janis, you'll love this book. Thanks!!!P.S. I'd like to add a personal note. If you like Janis, then you'd probably like her exhibits at the Gulf Coast Music Museam, on the Texas Gulf Coast, near her home town of Port Arthur, Texas. Also, at the Hard Rock Cafe in San Antonio, there is a stainded glass mural of Buddy Holly, Janis Joplin, & Stevie Ray Vaughan, all native Texans, on display there. Thanks again!!!

I followed Janis Joplin's music in her heyday and still enjoy books and plays about her music and her hard life. She was an exceptionally talented person done in by booze and drugs like so many musicians of the 60s and 70s. Nice pictures and the truth about her life and excesses. Yet, despite it all, her legacy lives on in her bluesy, gutsy music.

This is a wonderful non-fiction young adult book. I am covering Rise Up Singing in a Book Talk for a college level young adult literature class. I intend on telling the class that this text would be a perfect tool to introduce young adult students to non-fiction literature. Beautiful page graphics and wonderful photo quality make this book even better. Simple language is used, and a quick read!

I didn't like this book because it is poorly researched with a lot of unrelated pictures of people Janis did not know. However, the strongest part of the book is the wide variety of pictures of Janis. My home was 100' from Janis' home. I heard her sing Summer Time when she was a girl. She had a rich, beautiful, full sound. I am also a professional singer and voice teacher. Here is why the book is poorly researched. Port Arthur is not a small town. It had 60,000 population with several suburbs surrounding and adjoining it--@ 100,000 people in all. This is not small. The book states that Lamar College where Janis went,in Beaumont was one hour away. It is no more than 20-25 minutes away. The book fails to mention that Janis' mother was Registrar at the Business College in Port Arthur where Janis went to school. PAISD was one of the wealthiest in Texas and the United States. Excellent teachers. Oil Refineries everywhere. About 600-660 graduated each year. The vast majority left immediately to college and never came back. There were no jobs to be had in PA. So girls, with occassional exception, did not look for husbands in high school. They were preparing for college. Each year 500-550 seniors were not in the "in" group at the only public high school in town. None of them took a lot of drugs, or had sex with a lot of people, or...well...whatever Janis did. The truth is Janis was an extremely talented, out-of-the-norm person. I am SURE the bullies and "in" crowd closed in on her. People said nasty things. She did not take rejection well. The winds of beatnik rebellion even in PA attracted her and she chose to act out. Which made things worse. It was tragic. It was how she reacted to it that gave her problems. I was shocked at how her voice deteriorated. I still remember the good sounds when we were kids. The mistakes in the book were so easy to correct, if anyone was truely looking for facts.

The illustrations are cartoonish and reminiscent of 1970s art; a lot of space is dedicated to the genetic aspect of addiction; and scare tactics, including horrifying “true” stories, are the mainstay of the argument against becoming addicted to drugs. Although helpful resources are listed in the back matter, including websites, it is doubtful that many readers will stick with the book long enough to get to them. The middle section, “Self-Test Questions,” includes “screening tests” for different types of disorders and addictions. The main thesis seems to be that we are all addicted to something and to live life to the best of our ability, we need to find out what it is and let go of it. Alternatives to this title are Wyatt S. Good read. Short book, giving quality insight on Brexit. Most informative was the complex relationship between the UK and Europe for decades leading up the referendum.

I am glad to have had the opportunity to read this book.I lived in the UK for about years spanning the 1980s. I arrived just as Thatcher was taking power, and—like so many others in Britain—looked back across the pond in disbelief as Reagan was elected. I watched Britain’s higher education be gutted, saw the early consequences of privatization, and—quite generally—saw Britain fall into the consequent traps and morasses that helped lead to Brexit.I was in England and then Scotland the month before the Brexit vote; in fact I left the UK the day before the vote. No one I knew personally or professionally supported Brexit, and, though people were certainly worried, no one I interacted with thought that it would pass. It still is a shock, and, though I know how people explain the vote and the likely consequences of enacting Brexit, I can’t claim to understand it. And I worry constantly about what it will mean for England, whether it will exacerbate the tensions between Northern Ireland and Ireland, and whether it will destabilize Europe and the West, more broadly. Trump’s election and the tensions between England and his ‘Great America’ are another wildcard.I mention my background not because I think it is likely to be typical of other readers’ perspective, but rather because I suspect that it isn’t. And it certainly affected my angle of vision. I appreciate the background that the authors’ supply. But—perhaps because my questions and concerns are so different from those of the book’s anticipated audience—I did not feel, in the end, that I understood Brexit better, or could address my worries about it. For me, it remains the mystery it was when it passed.

“Brexit and British Politics” tells the tale of the background of British politics that led to and resulted from the Brexit campaign. Authors Geoffrey Evans and Anand Menon make their case through verbal analysis supported by statistical data. They relate the relationship between Britain and Europe during the life of the European Community and the leaders on both sides from Charles de Gaulle through Margaret Thatcher, John Major, Tony Blair, David Cameron and Jacques Chirac.What is so fascinating about this relatively short book about recent and contemporary British politics? I admit, I am an American and a political junkie. The interplay between the Conservatives and Labour and UKIP (United Kingdom Independence Party, I had wondered what that was before this reading) brings my superficial understanding of British politics up to date. What is seized my interest is the similarities between trends as depicted in this book and what I have seen in American politics. The realignment of parties is like watching America in a mirror. Conservatives rebrand from being the representatives of the upper classes and business to being the party of the middle class while Labour morphs from it working class roots to appeal to the middle class. Ideological wedges are dulled as politicians appeal to competency more than issues. In the wake of Brexit Labour moves back to the left and ideological/class struggle seems to be making a return. These moves provide a background against which to measure our own political odysseyI recommend “Brexit and British Politics” to anyone to anyone with an interest in the unfolding saga of Britain and Europe, recent British history and for Americans seeking a parallel political universe against which to measure our own.

Brexit has changed the face of Britain's politics, economy, trading relationships and their current culture. In this book the authors tale a neutral view point--not taking sides. Just like our current American election has people fiercely divided so does Brexit divide the UK. The authors discuss both sides of the issue with facts and a detachment in terms of not taking sides. They discuss what happened before, during and after the passage of the referendum.I think this is well constructed analysis of a very divisive issue in the UK. The book is short (120 pages of dialogue) with a comprehensive 15 pages of notes as well as a good index.If you are interested in Brexit and how it happened, what happened and what is probably going to happen then this is a very nice summary with the authors not taking sides, not judging and not haranguing.

"Brexit and British Politics" by Geoffrey Evans and Anand Menon is a balanced explainer for someone interested in what happened with the Brexit vote. I'm not familiar with Brexit except what was on the news so I found this book to be a good guide to understanding the different sides plus a brief history on modern British politics that lead to the vote. That part of the book may have been the most fascinating. It is a lean narrative told in accessible terms so that even a novice like me can follow the text. I also appreciate that the authors seem clear that this story of this vote and its effects is an open-ended one because the dust hasn't settled yet.All in all, a very good read on a very timely subject.

I'm a huge fan of Polity books and to date, have probably read at least a half dozen - perhaps more. Without exception, they are always brief yet informative so as to not waste the time of the reader. Likewise, this addition gets to the point, presents a brief but relevant background for those who may not be as familiar with the events leading up to the historic vote and then delves into clear yet concise overview of the current issues. Admittedly with the current happenings here in the states it's hard to keep up with what is going on at a global level (it's hard to keep up with what's going on domestically but that is another thing entirely) so this fills a void in my current understanding of events.

The ASBDA Curriculum Guide, 2nd edition, was first published in 1997. This book is a revision of the earlier 1st edition, originally published in the late 1970s. In this book the instrumental educator will find strategies for teaching concepts such as pitch, rhythm, and style, along with indicators at each grade level of what students of instrumental music should be able to demonstrate.This book does have several weaknesses, in this reviewer's opinion. First, it appears to have an "ivory-tower" feel to it in regard to tone and writing style. One should follow the guidelines of this book simply because people much smarter than you decided that this is what children should be capable of demonstrating at any particular time. The guidelines come across as heavy-handed at times, and appropriate examples are not always present.Second, this book does not address the realities many instrumental music educators face in a post-No Child Left Behind environment. The text assumes, for example, that the reader will fall into one of three categories: an elementary (grades 5 and 6) beginning band teacher, a junior high (grades 7 and 8) intermediate band teacher, and a high school (grade 9 through 12) teacher. Consequently, it delves into great detail with regard to in-school private lessons and their relation to the teacher's overall courseload. Unfortunately, at least in Ohio, the odds of a band teacher teaching only junior high or only high school are extremely limited now that we have been considered more "expendable", since music is not tested on standardized tests. Due to this, most directors in my area teach band at all age levels, grades 5-12, and do not have the time during the day to teach private lessons. This book is of little help in this instance to these teachers.Finally, this book addresses many of the same issues that state content standards in music are addressing. Considering that this book was written before states began implementing content standards in all subjects, including music, one can understand how this book served a purpose at the time. Now that states are supplying all educators with standards for their curricula, however, the value of this book is decreasing. Although it does offer band specific standards that may help the music teacher, these same standards could be formulated on their own by most intelligent music teachers from whatever standards their respective states supply.In closing, this reviewer feels that this book is slowly becoming a relic of a time before the advent of Highly Qualified Teacher programs; a time in which anyone with an undergraduate degree could teach and band programs were moving from concert to concert without any overall currculum goals in mind. Now that states are providing standards in music to educators, this book grows less and less useful. Perhaps a 3rd edition is needed that reflects these changing trends in education; otherwise, this book will serve primarily as little more than a relic of a bygone era in music education.
