This book tells you about life in Appalachia in a way that allows you to 'hear' what it was like - as if those interviewed by the authors were speaking to you. These are plain and simple stories from folks who are plain and simple in their passions for a way of life that you cannot easily find today.It was refreshing to hear an honest and easy story - not to mention useful! What other book combines insight on how to divine water, get rid of pesky negative energy and find your own healing herbs in one resource? Extremely illuminating and uplifting to the spirit when surrounded by so many negative views and high-minded "I've got all the answers" writings out there.You get to take what you want from this book - the stories are straightforward testimonies of sorts. Much power lies in a testimony... it is a sharing of a life lived, plain and simple. No one can take it or change it, it just is what it is.

We just wanted to get this one to go with all the other Foxfire books we had. Parts were interesting. I agreed with the author on the gospel songs.

I enjoyed this and recommend it to anyone who likes American history. The authors interviewed unique characters and described fascinating times and places, many that might otherwise, be left untold. Appalachian tales in fine form.

Love all my Foxfire Books and publications.

Although this book has a ton of information, it still feels limited in the subjects within the world of knives, and quite frankly, while I understand the economics of it with such a large volume of page content, I just can't stand the black and white pictures and illustrations. But in general, this book has value and contains detailed information that is certainly useful.

Like with most referance guide books,There is seldom everything that you are looking for.It's always not enough pictures or they didn't include the knife I really bought this knife for.Of course a book like that would be everything would be to large to use,or mail.I did wish it had a larger section on Ka-bar fixed blades,or Wester W49 Bowies.I guess this book was adiquit for what I needed,I will just added to the collection of Guides I already have and it will proably come in useful in the future.

My college did a decent job of training computer majors to be problem solvers. This book would have made an excellent companion text to instruction on data structures and algorithms.The author recommends knowledge of or simultaneous study of C++. I feel it would be accessible to any programmer in the C language family. Programmers in other languages could also obtain some benefit, but understanding would be a harder climb.Sure wish my workplace had allowed the luxury of studying a language before building production applications with it. Some of the author's recommendations in the last chapter are not always within the working programmer's control. The difference between academia and the rest of the world.All in all, well written, good use of examples, and sensible exercises to put the concepts into practice.

Very approachable, highly recommended as a first programming book for anyone looking to learn to develop their problem solving skills.

Great book. Uses C++ and elaborates on most programming concepts and issues and puts them in words that allows you to conceptually understand. This book had arrived badly damaged, as if it was kicked across a concrete floor and then put into the box for shipping.. contacted amazon for a replacement so all is well.

Some companies still put you in front of a whiteboard and ask you to code. BUT, given the amount of coding that's going to Russia, China and India, the hot upcoming jobs are in coding MANAGEMENT, Data Science, Embedded Systems, Sploit management and other high level design categories. Many even smaller companies are now creating a "CDSO" (Chief Data Science Officer) position which in some cases pays in the high 6 figures.This book is outstanding for the nitty gritty not just of how but WHY we select certain Design Patterns, structures, algorithms, and, in short, solution sets. It is a fun read and if you know any OOP language you'll have no problem with the C++ examples, they are not that advanced, but do make great and unusual points about options in, for example, modifying for efficiency or to avoid "reinventing the wheel" (or as the saying goes, reinventing the flat tire!).I interview hundreds of prospective coding managers, and I prefer to keep the questions at the 30,000 foot level of this text-- solution strategies, not just coding conventions or syntax. A lot of good people, especially overseas, can code, but very few can adeptly wind through imperative vs. functional, or modular modification vs. untouched APIs that aren't an exact fit to the problem definition.Everything from sliding puzzles and Sudoku are used by this engaging author to highlight examples not just of solutions but the differences between solution strategy options underlying those choices. The pedagogy is outstanding, as I'm finding with many No Starch titles, and you really remember this author's examples. He doesn't just understand analogy generalization deeply, he uses it adeptly throughout the book. I've found VERY FEW books that even attempt to do this, let alone do it well.A classic like Code Complete (CC) will give many more of the details that are illustrated in this book, but a triple threat of OOP Demystified, this book, and CC will make your interview, or consulting gigs, go much smoother. If you're considering writing a software book, this is a must read just for the pace, pedagogy and format. NOT a text from the standpoint of "solutions in the back," but great for changing your frame of reference about IT in general and problem solving specifics. Highly recommended.EMAILER NOTE: If you agree with some other reviewers that C++ is a "bias" you might enjoy Michael L. Scott's: Programming Language Pragmatics, Third Edition-- it is 900 pages and covers problem solving (in general and with specifics) in far more detail, and includes C++, Java, Ada, C# and Fortran in imperative and F#, OpenMP, and Scheme in functional as well as Erlang in concurrent/parallel. Some reviewers took umbrage that the author considers C++ a "real" language, but to be honest, people who code for nuclear plants and jet engines DO use C and C++, and many of them think of scripting languages as kid stuff. This isn't my opinion, just wanted you to understand a lot of the thinking out there. I love historical fiction especially about Medieval England. These 3 Stories take place during the Tudor era. The principal characters are not historical, but their stories play out alongside actual events in history. Since the stories are told in the first person, it is easy to identify right away with the main character. Their lives are filled with adventure, and although not really totally believable, the reader is swept along with the drama. This author who wrote under several names is well known for her historical fiction. I will be looking for more books by her.

Great interesting story that takes you back to Henry the VIII, Elizabeth 1 and the Spanish Armada. Takes you through the stories of generationsof families living through that time period. Lots of surprises and buccaneering. Kept my interest throughout the entire three stories, some quite unbelievable what women put up with back then, but guess they didn't have much choice.

Philippa Carr is my favorite female author ever. I have read and reread all of her books. They are a series, but you don't necessarily have to read in order, but it does help with character development. These are the first 3 books in the series. Miracle at St. Bruno's starts it all. Bruno is a deep dark character with many secrets, but all the woman love him and the monastery worships him. Lion Triumphant is my least favorite in the series because the female character is beaten and raped and falls in love with her captor. Not the strongest female lead. If you read the book in the mindset that this could have happened in this time period, you can enjoy the book and the writing. Just think back to how things would have been then. Witch from the Sea is my favorite of these three. A woman is washed up from the sea on Halloween and is branded a witch. The witch comes to the castle where Linnet lives and changes everything in the whole world. And it is a matter of life and death that she is stopped.

These three books follow five generations of women, from the tumultuous times of King Henry VIII through the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to the beginning of King James I. Each of these women is drawn to a dangerous man, with some happiness, some despair, and one murder. The times were dangerous, and life was hard. The author did a good job of weaving the history with believable characters, although this reader got tired of the women choosing men who were such bad choices as husbands. Fortunately the last daughter seems to have figured this out.

Complex and gripping historical fiction , set in the time of Henry VIII , Elizabeth and James I.The characters are vividly alive the background historical scene scholarly .

who do dastardly deeds but have a modicum of attractiveness. The author conveys a sense of historical events as they would have been experienced bybtge people of that era.

I read the Philippa Carr Series 25 years ago and was so excited to see it on Amazon and could download via Kindle to my Mini IPad. GREAT author and stories

It is a useful textbookIt encompasses al kinds of turbomachinery. So you get a really broad view of the subject.It is not really deep. But every important aspect of turbomachinery design has a space in it.Good reference book for people entering the field, and as all established university textbooks, It does not contain all the goods, but tells you where to get it.

This is a good book that is easy to follow. It does skip over some things, but if you are using with a class, you'll be fine.

A GOOD TEXT BOOK, CLEARLY EXPLAINING CONCEPTS INVOLVED.

Fast delivery great book

I am a professor and used this book for teaching turbomachines. This is the WORST textbook I ever had in teaching. There are too many mistakes and typos in the textbook and solution manuals! Most of them are obvious and some others are hard to tell! I cannot believe this is the 7th edition. It took me too much time to fix those errors! When I pointed this out to the publisher, they ignored my email!

I actually liked â€œAll inâ€ a little more than â€œNaked,â€ we were given the opportunity to learn more about both Ethanâ€™s and Brynneâ€™s history and dark secrets and why they both behave and have reservations the way they do.So just to do a quick recap of the 1st book, â€œNakedâ€ - unbeknownst to Brynne, her Father has hired Ethan Blackstone to protect her safety from a potential threat from her past â€“ a truly dark past which she has been trying to run from and forget. The moment Ethan sets eyes on Brynne, he falls hard and fast for her, but she is much more reserved and cautious and tries to deny her feelings for him, but they obviously canâ€™t fight their feelings for one another. Ethan is fully knowledgeable of Brynneâ€™s past and why he has to protect her, but he does not divulge this information to her or the fact that he is working for her Father. Brynne refuses to disclose her past history with Ethan, as she believes he will leave her if he finds out. â€œNakedâ€ ends with Brynne hearing the following message from her Father to Ethan as they are literally having sex on top of his desk. Brynne is utterly shocked, hurt and dismayed and walks out and leaves Ethan.â€œYouâ€™re an "a-hole", Blackstone. I hired you to protect my daughter, not to "screw" her!...â€ (pls note: words in quotations have been modified, as amazon won't allow me to use actual words = ( )â€œAll inâ€ begins with Ethan completely devastated that Brynne has left him. He tries to give her space, but is going crazy and doesnâ€™t feel he can survive without her. Ethan sends Brynne flowers and a heartfelt letter stating that he loves her, but that heâ€™s still concerned for her safety and to call him if anything out of the ordinary occurs. After a few days, Brynne calls Ethan indicating that something strange has in fact happened. They meet-up, make-up then have lots of sexâ€¦then more sex and then some! (you get the picture?!?) Theyâ€™ve promise one another that they will no longer keep secrets and that there are in fact, â€œAll in.â€"If you come with me you're signing on for all of me Brynne. I don't know any other way to be with you. it's all in for me. And I want it to be all in for you too." - EthanI actually enjoyed â€œAll inâ€ more than â€œNaked.â€ I felt as though I got to know both characters a lot more and the demons they were fighting; which explained why Ethan and Brynne behaved as they did. However, similar to the 1st book, I still felt that the bookâ€™s flow was off a bit, real choppy and lacked the cohesiveness that I was longing to have. It felt as though the scenes jumped from one train of thought to another and was at times all over the place.Ethan was as controlling as ever and seemed to freak out at every given turn, BUT in the same breathâ€¦he was so freakin sweet and cared so much about Brynne. (Sigh â€“ I guess I could look over his dom qualities?!?) His jealousy however, was out of control!! Uhmmâ€¦your girlfriend poses nude for a living buddy, so you better get a handle on that! LOL!Brynne appeared so fragile in this book compared to the 1st book. It irritated me that she had so much self-doubt (rolls eyes) Hellllo?!? Did you forget that Ethan has known about your situation and your past from the beginning and he still wanted to be with you?!? DUH!!! It also annoyed me how she just chose to wander the streets knowing damn well that Ethan already explained that she could be in danger! OMG!! (rolls eyes AGAIN!)I felt like the plot was a little drawn out in this book. We got a whole lotta steamy LOVINâ€™ between Ethan and Brynne (donâ€™t get me wrongâ€¦I LOVE that shiznit!) But, Iâ€™m so ready to know what actual danger Brynne is in and we didn't get any indication until literally THE END, but yet, we still donâ€™t know! DAMN YOU Cliffhanger!! This Lowcountry series is similar to the Beach House series in that there is an elderly matriarch; in this case Marietta Muir. She was a Charleston socialite in her younger years. She has sold her mansion in Charleston after the deaths of her husband and son some years ago and has been living in the old beach house on Sullivanâ€™s Island. She is turning 80 and wants to sell the house. But first, she wants to reunite with her three granddaughters who havenâ€™t been there in ten years. Her son was their father, but they all had different mothers and were raised separately. She and the girls have memories of the summers they all spent together. There is also a storyline about dolphins that is as interesting as the beach house.Mary Alice acquaints you with her characters in such a way that you feel you know them and would recognize them if you met them on the street. Her stories draw you in with her themes. I especially enjoy the wildlife and lowcountry conservation themes that are informative and interesting. Makes me want to see the lowcountry!Great summer read!

Mary Alice Monroe weaves the lives of three estranged sisters into a beautiful tapestry of reconciliation.It happens over one last summer at their Grandmother's home on Sullivan's Island, S.C. Being "forced" (by conditions set in their father's will) to spend an entire summer on the island with one another one final time does not set well with any of them. Each brings her own "baggage" with her to the island and just wants to be left alone by the others, including their grandmother whose home it is where they are staying.One of the sisters brings her autistic child with her for the summer and much of the book revolves around him, one of his aunts, and a dolphin. Together the summer girls begin to enjoy the island as broken fences begin to mend. It is truly a beautiful and touching story that I would highly recommend!

I do like Mary Alice Monroe's writing. I read all four of the beach house books first. I was surprised in reading this that the plot line was eerily similar to the premise in the beach house except in this case it was get all three grand daughters to the beach house vs. one daughter in beach house so they could reconnect. Not that it's a bad thing, but just a bit too similar for me on top of having just read the others.

I loved the descriptions of the Lowcountry beach culture and natural world, but found the characters unlikable and the plot half-baked.In particular, I really disliked the manipulative grandmother and the harsh, judgmental love interest. Really? As the book ended, one of the sisters is still trying to earn her way back into his good graces, and he's disapproving of her from start to finish. I didn't find that healthy or romantic at all. The storyline with the dolphin is silly and far-fetched...and I say that as a dolphin lover. None of the sisters had any sort of connection by the end of the book, and there was no resolution after the awful scene between the aunt and the autistic nephew either, it all felt like setup to suck the reader into buying the rest of the series.

Love Mary Alice Monroe's writing of the South Carolina coast area, the people and wild life there! In this book, I learned quite a bit about Dolphins, the ones before, turtles! So interesting!She has a way of explaining people's deep feelings, why they're that way, how they're trying to change, if that's nec.I'm looking fwd to the rest in this series, and to more of this authors books!(It does bother me, the usage of what to me, are men's names, for women, Carson, Harper, like that. Even 92% into this, I saw the name Carson and immed thought it was Blake she was talking about, but no, it was the woman. Prob my age, 75, I like appropriate names, Susie, Lily, etc. But it's not my book, I'm just saying it's hard for me to get into that frame of mind with masculine names for feminine characters. It makes it somehow less for me)

Mary Alice Monroe is gifted story teller that brings to intricate dysfunction of families to light in a very honest way. Southerners have a heritage of keeping family secrets. But eventually everything will be revealed but only in small bites, so the hearer of these truths can slowly digest how this new found knowledge will change their lives. Her portrayal of the 3 sisters and the two elder women who loves them above all else are classical women of the South-warm, head strong and up to any task.

I am now on Book 3. I enjoyed the fictional parts of the books as well as learning about the low country, sea turtles and dolphins Monroe's books are somewhat similar in plot; however, I enjoy the way she writes, her characterizations and the fact that one learns about sea animals and many aspects of nature. Her stories also keep one's interest. They are all nice summer reads.

Carrying a heavier payload than the glamorous B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24, nicknamed the Liberator, also filled the skies over Germany, bombing troops, oil refineries, factories and other strategic targets. South Dakota-born George S. McGovern was 22 when he became a B-24 pilot in the 741st Bomb Squadron, based in Cerignola, Italy. Though basing the book largely on McGovern's 35 missions, for which he won the Distinguished Flying Cross, Ambrose includes many other stories about the men who flew over Germany and eastern Europe. As Ambrose makes abundantly clear, the planes were not fun to fly. The crew faced inside temperatures of 50 below zero, sat in cramped seats and suffered high casualty rates. Ambrose follows pilots and crews from start to finish where they were from, their backgrounds, training, bravery and heroism as they did their part to help win the war. Today there are only four B-24s left of the 18,300 that once made up the force. He was with the 451st Group 15th Air Force as an aerial gunner..Letter from brother dated March 23'45. ..."After we got away from the place we went our 13th alternate. Now we had ten out of thirteen alternate targets that didn't have guns. We went over the one that did. ...they started shooting, we dropped our bombs, and then by gosh, instead of dodging the lead pilot just kept on going straight ahead. Our pilot waited a while but when no one else dodged why we did it ourselves. Our pilot just took off in a screaming turning dive.They told us later that the only reason they didn't follow us was they thought we were hit. What a foolish thing to say. We just don't like flak. But I wish Calkins (the pilot) would say something when he starts playing those games."The pilot was Earl Calkins of Yakima Washington and the plane was "The Yakima Kid"Brother Frank stayed in the Air Force, served in B29's in Korea, commissioned and flew F86Ds until retirement as captain.

purchased for my father in law Lt Ed Snyder (96 years old) who flew 35 combat missions iwith the 8th air force during this time. He really likes the book and said it is very accurate although true to the warriors of this generation he said he didnt have it nearly as bad as some and had a roof over his head after returning from missions and a lot of times one hot meal which many did not get.

It is full of embarrassing errors about flying and airplanes. At the beginning of chapter three, for example, Ambrose gives us the startling information that B-17s did not sink when they crashed in the oceanâ€”and that is only one of dozens of such cringe-worthy flubs found throughout the book.For anyone with much aviation knowledge, this book is an exercise in eye rolling. I have enjoyed other Ambrose histories, but I cannot recommend this one.

I am a big fan of Ambrose and have read several of his books. No disappointment here, and, I'll tell you it makes me so proud of our history and the men & women who fought to serve this country and come to the aid of other nations. Great read.

This book revealed a side of George McGovern that was definitely lost in the 1968 presidential election where the Nixon campaign very effectively portrayed McGovern in a negative light in terms of Vietnam policy. It is interesting to see that he was actually a very courageous B-24 pilot and a man of great character who refused to tout his WWII credentials as he believed that was just a US citizen doing his duty. He stands in stark contrast to Richard Nixon who only talked the talk.

Stephen Ambrose has done it again. One of the best and most prolific historians has produced another epic account of "The Greatest Generation," this time from the airmen's point of view. Centering on George McGovern's service with the 455th Bomb Group which was part of the 15th Air Force stationed in Italy. Ambrose transcends the boundaries and his book manages to show the day to day grind of the airmen, where one day they're flying through flak and dying horrible deaths, the next day, they're sitting in their tents utterly bored. The men who crewed the B-24s were truly the "dogfaces" of the air, and their contributions to the Allied victory cannot be denied. Even when the air war seemed won, there was much danger, whether it was from flak, the Luftwaffe, flying accidents, mishandling of bombs or just plain fate, these men, boys really, served their country well. Stephen Ambrose has given them a beautiful tribute that will stand the test of time.

This sketchy bio of the early life and war experiences of George McGovern, the very prominent American politician, does not give much insight into anything. The author, who has had much success elsewhere, seems unable to make up his mind exactly what he wants this book to be - a bio, a wartime tale of a bomber pilot, or a close look at the B-24. Consequently it is just a bit of each.It is well edited, without the abysmal grammar found in many other Kindle editions. and so can be read quite quickly. We are left knowing that McGovern was a very brave and skilful pilot, the B-24 was a lumbering but effective pig of a plane, and the Germans were at that time still quite formidable.However I was not left thinking this was one of the great WWII novels, and maybe it was never meant to be.

Stephen Ambrose always entertains while he informs. My cousin never told me about the boredom, terror, physical stress, and satisfaction endured by the pilots and crews of the B-24 heavy bombers in WW II. More hazardous than ground combat, strategic bombing was engaged by some of the most intelligent and highly trained of our military. Learn of the trials and bravery of many of the B-24 crewmembers in the 15th Army Air Forces, including future senator and presidential candidate George McGovern. I wish that my cousin's name had been included.
