In the published edition of his masterwork, "A Streetcar Named Desire", Tennessee Williams uses as an epigraph the following stanza from "The Broken Tower", probably the final poem written by the American romantic poet Hart Crane (1899-1932):"And so was it I entered the broken worldTo trace the visionary company of love, its voiceAn instant in the wind (I know not whither hurled)But not for long to hold each desperate choice."Crane wrote this difficult poem in 1932, shortly before his suicide. The poem speaks of Crane's efforts to capture the fire of the imagination and the gift of love in the course of an unhappy life. With his passionate romanticism and his lyricism, Crane was a deep and lifelong influence on Williams.It helped to think about the importance of Crane's lines when I revisited "Streetcar". They capture something of the way we are to understand Blanche DuBois The unhappy heroine of Williams's play did indeed live in a "broken world" of sundered dreams. She lost the remnants of Belle Reve, the family plantation in Mississippi, together with her self-respect. As his own life progressed, Williams came increasingly to identify himself with Blanche DuBois, and perhaps these lines from Hart Crane apply to Williams view of himself as well.With its lurid, pulpy, and melodramatic story, Streetcar has always been a tempting target for critics. But in beautifully poetic language, the play raises certain timeless themes, including the search for love, the powerful and destructive force of sexuality, and the centrality of romance and imagination to give life meaning in a world of brute fact. In a short introduction he wrote to the play called "A Streetcar named Success" Williams suggested, following William Saroyan, that the theme of the play was that "purity of the heart is the one success worth having. `In the time of your life -live!'" The play and Blanche come to a sad end. There’s a strong drive and passion in many of the characters in A Streetcar Named Desire. A definite rawness in emotion and complexity is within many of the scenes and situations.I had read A Streetcar Named Desire once before, but never really caught on at how so much is working underneath the surface of the dialogue. In many estimations, Blanche is a character deeply rooted in pathos and tragedy. Her vision of what the world should be, as opposed to what it truly is, is at the center of her unhinging. Arriving to her sister’s apartment in New Orleans, she has taken a leave of absence from her teaching, and there are more undercurrent issues that have taken hold of her, most notably losing Belle Reve, their childhood home. At her opposite, Stanley, Stella’s husband, represents the brute, harsh, realities of the world.I think that, in many respects, Williams creates an intensity that builds as the play moves forward until the dramatic final scene. There is a power in Stanley and Blanche’s confrontations, especially in the final scenes as we learn more and more about Blanche’s past. These moments are written so eloquently, so human, clearly by someone who has experienced, witnessed, and reflected on the impact of human sufferings and failings. In short, clearly Williams was a man who could project real human situations into dialogue in such a clear, convincing way.A Streetcar Named Desire is a very powerful and thought-provoking play, with characters who breathe strong emotion throughout, making the scenes really come to life. It is no wonder that this epic play was made into a fine classic 1951 film with Marlon Brando as Stanley and Vivien Leigh as Blanche.

A masterpiece. Tennessee Williams may be the best contemporary playwright America has ever seen (may he rest in peace). The story is flawless, and the stage directions are so specific and meaningful. Every word is filled with intent, every color is painted through the text, and the message is timeless. The relationships the characters share are well flushed out and highly sophisticated. Williams even describes the music playing during scenes. I hope you read this over and over again, just as I do. A timeless classic, a masterpiece of American Theatre.

I knew nothing of Tennessee Williams when I bought this. The title implied something romantic or passionate. Nope. Just women abuse, rape, and crappy men. The author liked to confront society with it's screwed up ways. I can imagine the stir this as a play in its era would have caused. In today's world, it's not as enjoyable to read as it just leaves you feeling awful for women in that time.

Landscape Drawing in Pencil Frank M Rimes I didn't find this book very helpful. I appreciate this author's approach via presenting a picture and then discussing qualities, problems, solutions etc. But in the sketchy (no pun intended) way he does it here, it is more like a lesson in drawing his specific picture(s). I don't consider myself a REAL artist so maybe the fault is mostly mine. But I still cannot recommend this book to anyone.

Obviously, given that it is an art instruction book, this volume contains numerous illustrations. These illustrations are in landscape page view, not portrait. The kindle cannot cope with this. It turns the landscape pages on their side so if you are viewing on Kindle for PC, you are viewing all images at a rotation of 90 degrees.Amazon really should not be selling art books on kindle until and unless they improve the kindle so that (a) images display as in the book, which means that on Kindle for PC the page width needs to be widened, and (b) it is possible to view in colour. Further, it is essential that art books be viewable properly on Kindle for PC because the small size of other Kindles renders them intrinsically unsuitable for displaying art books.

It's good if you want reference images with barely any words written about the picture. Most pictures contain only slight words on shading being darker there or lighter here, but not much else. No instruction on how to recreate any of the beautiful sketches for ourselves. It's great for reference, like I said, but it just wasn't what I was expecting-But that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I read through it and I realized that step-by-step books can only teach so much. But a book like this-one that tells you how to create different textures then illustrates them for you to see and study closely-teaches you more than you'd think possible by just looking at pictures.Makes you slow down and think about what you need to do to create what you want. It's perfect in that, as well as showing some beautiful artwork with techniques a bit dated, but not bad at all.

Note that this is originally from 1929, and the language definitely reflects that.This book doesn't seem to know its audience. The author states this book isn't for beginners, but then covers very beginner pencil techniques, and then jumps directly to very advanced, completed drawings. There is a short paragraph discussing how each drawing was made, but if you understand that paragraph, you don't need the book. A more step-by-step approach would have been infinitely preferable.

It isn't quite what I expected, more of an overview of very basic drawing techniques and then straight into overviews of completed drawings. There really isn't any discussion of suggestions for the beginner on different ways to draw common objects found in landscapes.

This is not a book for beginners. As the author states in the introduction, it is aimed at students who have had some training and experience drawing and have some knowledge of freehand perspective. It is meant “to arouse an interest in the art of pencil technique, especially as it pertains to out of door subjects.” The book was originally published in 1929. The technique referred to is the now all-but-forgotten technique of broad stroke drawing or pencil painting where “each stroke is made in some definite direction, and then left that way...” Other proponents of this technique include Theodore Kautzky (“The Ted Kautzky Pencil Book”), Earnest W. Watson (“The Art of Pencil Drawing”), Ferdinand Petrie (“Drawing Landscapes in Pencil”) and Carl Purcell (“Drawing with Your Artist's Brain”). The strength of this book is in the 22 finished drawings reproduced of a size and quality allowing study of the various strokes used in their creation. A succinct description is provided with each explaining a particular problem solved in the drawing. If you appreciate this type of drawing and are looking for samples to study, this is one of the few books available that is dedicated to the technique.

Only a good book if you are interested in reading a book by an arrogant person who claims (quite literally many times in the first couple chapters) that his style is the only style that is worthwhile. Then there are sketches at the end with no instruction. As a matter of fact, he says in the beginning it would be unethical to copy his masterpieces. Find a different Landscape book.

He explains the importance of Mary in God's plan to save humanity through His son Jesus Christ. Reverend Carrigou-Lagrange discusses how Mary's infallible submission to God's will is an unfailing source of virtues such faith, hope, and humility. He discusses how Mary's role as the mother of the redeemer and mother of all men justifies her title of universal queen. He relies on scriptures to explain the significance of the prayers embedded in the rosary.The structure of sentences in the book and the English translation from the original version makes it difficult to read at times. The book is mainly intended for theologians.

This book is a masterpiece about Our Lady, from one of the great theologians in Church history. fr. Lagrange shows how God chose Mary to the worthy Mother of God--far holier than all the other saints collectively--and to be associated with Jesus Christ in the redemption of each one of her children. Aeterna Press's edition does contain more typos than what is normal in books, but one can't beat the price. I am very satisfied.

I have not finished the book yet. Elegant, clear writing. This 20th century theologian communicates ideas and doctrines clearly but his focus is not abstract. Rather it is on how tbese ideas are relevant to our life. However, no preaching.

Without deviant theological concepts that disguise modernist agendas, Reverend Garrigou-Lagrange clearly explains the Catholic dogma of Mary the mother of the Savior and why she is and should be held in such high esteem.

Wonderful logical explanation for the reasons for honoring our Immaculate mother. It puts to bed the anxiety many people have in praying to Mary, seeking her intersession. It explains through the hierarchy of the Devine, the Hypostatic Union, and full of grace and just what these mean and what they require. Once these explanations are logically set out, then what the repercussions must be. It answers the question when asked of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Who is Mary to You and what are you doing about it ?

I downloaded this & several other books & on the kindle fire they won't paginate or keep a bookmark! It's a real pain to have to search for the last page all the time! None of the books I got recently, work on the "fire" correctly & they don't work w/audio either! They were, I suspect; made for the NEW KINDLE & will work fine with that!?!? BUT, the don't work well with MY K Fire! (wish THAT fact was "advertized"!

If you love our Blessed Mother you should really read this book. Lovely insights about how close our Lord is to his Mother and how we can become closer too!

Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange was one of the last great Thomists of the Strict Observance and is somewhat neglected today. On the plus side, he taught the future John Paul II theology, on the minus he made life difficult for newer theologians like Henri de Lubac who wanted to think outside the Thomistic box. All that said, he is a great teacher and spiritual writer. All his books are worth reading. This one will deepen both your theological understanding of the Mother of God and your spiritual life. Highly recommended.
